  • Luc Nilis, one of Belgiums most prolific strikers in their history only managed to feature for Aston Villa 3 times in the Premier League after suffering a horrific injury which forced him into early retirement.
Dan Morgan and Dan Wiseman went deeper into what made Nilis so special, with the help of The Athletic's Gregg Evans, who was fortunate enough to speak with Nilis recently, and Heart of the Holte's very own Jamie Yapp.

I'm from Belgium. Nilis was one of my favorite players ever. He really had something special. The obvious one is that he was bipedal. And his shot technique was truly something to behold. I always compared him with a striker like Bergkamp. He made it look so easy. Chips from outside the box, absolute screamers, free kicks.. you name it, he did it. So sad what happened to him.

Luc Nilis Subtilis !! Both Brazilian Ronaldo and Ruud van Nistelrooij named Nilis their favourite strike partner ! ( And that means something when you see who Ronaldo played with in his career ).
3:00 who to compare with? Bergkamp of course !! ( With a better free kick). Nilis was typical a 2nd striker, whereas Lewandowski is a pure striker. And he was fully engaged in the game , not absent as Berbatov could be at times.
The Luc Nilis compilation is one of my fave yt videos..

That was the first injury id ever witness that scared me. I ended up doing a similar break but to my left arm while playing as a kid. What a shame we didnt get to see him properly and its so sad it ended his career! That kind of thing can happen at any moment in contact sport or even worse. Important to remember. Great vid and interviews from you guys, thank you very much!

Brilliant video lads. What emotions Nilis brought. So excited when we signed him, but then totally gutted after the injury. Nice walk down memory lane. Keep up the top work 👍

Luc was class but that injury messed it all up. He had a lot of great attributes to his game. We were so unlucky to lose him to that injury...
His age never came into it. He had the ability to take us to a title with JG.. That was gutting tbh. It bacame one of those if only moments for our football club..
    Luc was a DON.

The fact that Ronaldo R9 says Luc Nilis was the best player he played with says it all!

Great video. I always felt what if we got Nilis and jpa in the same team? I felt nilis would of drove him on like RVN. As a 13 year old Lucs injury played on my mind a lot. Not knowing his recovery and he seemed to disappear. I read recently after the injury he got a gambling addiction and depression.. I still think Richard Wright is a tosser. he could see luc, luc did not see him. Great video Doug seems a bit ruthless with the retiring and insurance?

At some point with the injury , there was talk by the medics that the leg might need even amputation. The process drove him into a deep depression and addiction ..
