That's right, he needed actual mana (of any type) for the black symbol. But he had mana to spare and it didn't change the amount of damage Maraxus did.
It was nice seeing a Maraxus deck, back when I first became interested in MTG I had a magazine that used his card art and always found it super cool looking despite its simple enough design. Just a big buff guy with a mask and a big knife.
It reminds me of an old MTG video game (that was pretty bad tbh) called Battlegrounds, where Maraxus was the final, and thus most powerful, red hero. (For reference, White was Akroma, Green was Multani, Blue was Arcanis, and Black was Ihsan's Shade, of all things) I find it funny how Akroma and Arcanis were (and are) quite powerful and famous cards, but the other three (except possibly Multani, because Dominaria) are relatively weak and hardly known. I mean, Ihsan was in M25, but he's not exactly good, though I suppose he might have been when he was first printed.
@@Tryo707 This is the first I've heard of it. Funny that it was produced by Sid Meier. In any case, no, I didn't get the chance to play it, I'm too young really, I was 1 when it came out.

That Maraxus was great to watch! Mono red Voltron is pretty underrated, one of my friends has a pretty powerful Ashling Deck and it's scary to play against haha
Someone else already said this but it bears repeating: Effects that last "until this card leaves the field" don't happen when the owner dies. That player and their cards cease to exist from that point on, and their cards don't exist to create triggers that would return something that was exiled (for example)
I highly recommend Vorel of the Hull Clade as a Simic +1/+1 counter commander. I've had my deck for a couple months now and it might be my favorite deck. People tend to underestimate Vorel in my experience, so he tends to stick to the board and quickly gets out of hand. Going from a single counter to 60 over a couple turns is not unheard of, and there's nothing better than doing that to a Fathom Mage.
Dear MTG Muddstah. All i want for Christmas this year is a video(or more) of Pir and Toothy,. For some reason, no one who uploades videos include these two brilliant commanders. So please, make my wish come true! And thank you for a great show!😉👍
Good luck with it. I wanted to build one since I love Mairsil the Pretender so much but he's just...hard to pull off. Getting the counters onto creatures with actually useful abilities is a feat in itself. And if he get's removed a few times he becomes uncastable. I played Momir Vig to try to fix the creatures with relevant abilities problem and...it's just a Momir Hackball deck now. I DID end up making Simic counters though. I crossed it with Landfall synergies and have Tatyova at the helm. It works surprisingly well.
My very first commander deck was an experiment kjar deck. That thing went infinite in the strangest ways using other people’s creatures. Eventually I just stopped because it wasn’t fun.
It was a really fun game, but there were quite a few misplays: -Vincent used his Inspiring Statuary for colored mana with Stolen Strategy -Vincent could have taken Sam out after casting All is Dust as Haunted Cloak gives haste -Sam missed a few Massacre Wurm triggers, though they didn't matter in the end -Romain missed the Huatli emblem triggers on his soldier tokens
Was Romain not drawing off the Huatli emblem trigger? It says "Whenever a creature enters the battlefield under your control", meaning they don't need to be cast, and it includes tokens, but it seemed like he never drew from it despite creating tokens with Emmara while he had the emblem.
While we're all nitpicking on stuff, if a player dies and had something of yours in exile, like Oblivion Ring or even a Flickerwisp effect, you don't get it back. Ever. It's their effect that would return it, but they're out of the game so their effects don't exist anymore.
A bit late reply, but this is not true for all these effects. It is true for Oblivion Ring, which has a separate triggered ability that is not going on the stack because the player left the game, but that is not how Conclave Tribunal works. It will just return the exiled card to the battlefield the same moment it leaves.
At 6:27, I believe Mystic Snake shouldn't have been able to block Emmara, due to Sidar Kondo. Not sure what that would have changed in the game but Jiang Yanggu should have died there and then :p
The turn where Vince played the Demonic tutor lost him the game. If I see it correctly and the Skullclamp is in fact equipped (in then moves away from the commander later in the turn from some reason) - he starts with a20 damage (7+7 from lands, 1 creature + 4 artifacts + 1 for Skullclamp). If he just used his Lost Vale to tutor (finding the Valakut and playing it if that was what he tutored for) he loses 1 power but gains 1 from Valakut and they uses the remaining 1 mana to play Romain's clamp leaving him with exactly 21 points of Commander damage. With Sam dead, he could have easily killed the other two players. Of course, it is much easier to see that for me without 3 people looking at me (I am also not sure what he had in his hand and what he tutored for, that might change the play). Maraxus seems like really cool and hard to play well commander.
Why not Adapt Kraj before Incubation Druid was knocked out? I know you can't adapt once Inc Druid has a counter on it but does the ability actually go away or is it stopped?
Okay, Romain looted soooo many times with the Smuggler’s Kopter and still didn’t hit a land. I had to check the deck list, cause that’s some seemingly crazy bad luck. Only 34 lands. That explains it. Also I guess the deck is pretty low to the ground, so it makes sense.
Always fun to play with you Muddstah! It was an incredible game with that Maraxus threatening our life total ! Ahah keep up the great work and content!
I don't think the Cloak would be returned to the field when Romain dies. Conclave Tribunal does leave the field, but it can't put the delayed trigger onto the stack that would return the Cloak. EDIT: I'm wrong, see below!
Actually that is incorrect. With effects like Oblivion Ring that trigger on leaving the battlefield, the trigger wouldn't go off, but because of the newer wording, the effect keeping the Cloak in exile would cease to exist when Romain dies, and it would return to the field.
@@dndmasterJDY After researching, I am wrong and you are indeed correct. It is not on the official rulings for this particular card, but I found one with similar effect on Angel of Sanctions "In a multiplayer game, if Angel of Sanctions’s owner leaves the game, the exiled card will return to the battlefield. Because the one-shot effect that returns the card isn’t an ability that goes on the stack, it won’t cease to exist along with the leaving player’s spells and abilities on the stack." At 13:30, I don't think that Vincent can use inspiring statuary that way - they don't create mana, so can't be 'spent as any colour'....Am I wrong?
That's correct: he can tap artifacts to cut reduce the colorless cost, but colored mana must be paid with actual mana.
The dt was cast from stolen strategy which I’m think allows to cast with any coloured mana.
It was from the Stolen Strategy, which specifies that he can spend mana as though it were any color.
Improvise doesn't actually generate mana, though so it doesn't work in that way.
That's right, he needed actual mana (of any type) for the black symbol. But he had mana to spare and it didn't change the amount of damage Maraxus did.
A lot of Massacre wurm triggers were missed when the arcbond killed everything
darkywaf Massacre Wurm is a MVP in my Yarok deck and everyone always thinks the 2 life loss is only triggered from creatures that die to the ETB.
