If you tee into the other vent line, moisture will also travel to the other fan. Venting into the attic is bad news, mold etc., each one needs it's own external vent.

    • @chrisnairn7558

I totally agree. I would also use insulated exhaust fan tubing, preferably rigid. And also get the other piece of that roof vent.

A back draft damper in line would probably also work but agree with the insulated ducting and correct mounting

Dnt feel bad Chet my stepfather was hanging from our attic half body in the attic half body in our dining room we told him to put some plywood on the floor for the same reason that he was going to end up falling through but didn't listen, also we have back draft blockers and have not had any issues with moisture or mold build up in our washrooms exhaust fans

Chet, you need to get each of those exhaust pipes routed to an external vent. Note I wrote each. Do not use a Tee, as the air will backflow to whichever one is not running, thus putting the moist air back into the other bathroom. That needs to be done ASAP! That moisture in the attic is BAD.
As for a misstep onto the ceiling, as an electrician in an earlier life, I did several of those... Nothing that can't be fixed. And always remember, anyone who never made a mistake never did ANYTHING.

    • @agentcrm

Or add a second fan after the Tee, to suck the air from both bathrooms.

  • @jz1340

The power is at the switch for the light. Enlarge the switch opening to accommodate a two gang electrical box. Remove the single gang box. Install a 4" x 4" electrical remodel box in the opening. Run the fan wire to the the two gang. Connect the fan to the circuit, then connect that wire to the new switch for the fan. Now secure the two switches to the 4 x 4 box. Presto Chango...done.
The vent should discharge in the soffit.

Built my first house @ 12. Ya know... You're not doing it right if you don't drop parts and screws. The higher you are on a ladder, depends on how important the screws and parts you drop. If you’re already going to be fishing a wire up why don’t you just go over and fish a wire down to where the switch is now take the cover off enlarge the hole put a double switch box and pull power from one line to the second switch pull a wire up and over ….you’re pulling wires anyway.
Never vent to attic! moisture breeds mold!

That is your attic vent fan that should be run off of a thermostat in that box that it is connected to so it should be automatic. It is for in the summer to vent the heat out of your attic to help reduce cooling costs and keep the heat down in your attic.

The gray box next to the attic ventilation fan is a thermostat. The black screw adjusts the temperature it comes on at. There may be a breaker for it in the main panel or a switch somewhere. The vents on the motor for it need cleaning.

You have an attic fan. Pretty common item. The box you were pointing to is the thermostat that runs that fan. It probably kicks in when the attic temperature hits about 110 degrees. It blows the hot air out so your air conditioner doesnt have to work so much in the summer time. The only problem with not having the vents go directly outside is condensation in the winter.

Your attic fan (the one in the roof) looked like it was burned up on the video. Might need to replace that too. In the meantime take your bathroom exhaust fan duct(s) and route them to that attic fan hole. It will minimize humidity in your attic until you can make the proper penetration thru the roof when the weather improves. And since you have to have your drywall guy back to fix your ceiling, run another wire from your shower fan/lite down to the inside wall, just outside the shower. There is an easy way to wire a switch there to control the fan/lite assembly separate from the vanity lite.

I think you done an awesome job considering ALL the things that could have went wrong! You could have fallen all the way through the ceiling but you didn’t do it so Yay that is a
WIN! You may not have successfully been able to rig your light together but you did yay! That is a win! Not many people could survive small places, insulation and fishing wires out! That is a WIN!! It’s all about perspective!! Everything that happens in our lives that we think is so awful usually pails into comparison to other people problems which have much worse. So we all have days that overwhelm us but if we make it through them to live another day than we are a winner and thank you Lord because we are way ahead of the game! Y’all got this! Hang on!!

When I built my house I put an 8:12 pitch roof on it. It's kind of a pain in the butt to walk on the roof but on the bright side there is plenty of room to move around up in the attic. As to stepping on the sheet rock, it's easy to do that will all the insulation up there. You can't see the rafters and kind of have to go by feel. I worry every time I'm in the attic that I'll miss a rafter and step on the sheet rock. Don't beat yourself up over making an easy to make mistake. Everything can be fixed by a good mud/texture guy.

You can cut that tar paper away from the holes from the underside. If that flapper isn't leaking just put up a square hole to round tubing adapter on the underside. Use liquid nails instead of nailing or screwing upward through the roof boards. You did great brother, take care.

Hey Chet I enjoy watching all your videos. I did blow in insulation and spray foam for 15 years so I know exactly the conditions you were dealing with. Such a pain of a place to work.
You definitely want to vent each fan separately and it's probably to late but use insulated exhaust pipe to minimize condensation happening.
1 idea is vent out through soffit instead of roof.

For your vent tubes, it’s preferable to use insulated tubing in an attic (in northern climates) since the humidity will condense and freeze on the inside of the pipe and next shower the warm air will melt the ice in the vent pipe and rain cold water on you. Ask me how I know. 😂

Chet, the tee in the duct will not work without flapper check valves tightly sealed. The air will blow through the path of least resistance so it.will blow from one.bathroom to the other. If both fan seals are tight then only one at a time can be used as the fan will not have enough force.to lift seal against oncoming air. They also make remote Bluetooth fans that require no wiring.

  • @Djwally13
    @Djwally13 หลายเดือนก่อน

Reattach the ducting to the vent. All its doing is pumping moisture into the attic which is not good. Most attic fans are automatic and kick on when it's too hot in the attic. But make sure it's still working. Good luck! 👍

Hi Chet, your fan and light fixture over the shower has to be connected through a GFI ground fault outlet or breaker.

That's OK Chet. If Big Swede won't NOT let you live it down, we'll help him! LOL Accidents happen to all of us. Just roll with it, laugh it off. At least you didn't get hurt! WOW, you do live dangerously, eh? Tell your MIL to get up in the attic, for her rent? You ae gonna end up living at the farm doing that!

We found a vent that mounts in the soffit, much easier than going through the roof.

I speak from experience as I had the same situation and chose the same solution as you, the first time. You'll find that one fan will just blow the humidity to the other bathroom, so I added one way vents to direct the air out the pipe. Moisture condensed on those and on the metal T and rusted into a mess. I strongly suggest you make a plan for the spring to get the insulated tubing and then cut two new dedicated vents in the roof. In the long run it'll be worth the effort.

Chet the fan in the roof is a heat exhaust fan that is usually direct wired through a thermostat switch. It should go on automatically depending on the temp setting which is on the thermostat. I have one of these BUT had to replace the motor twice. Good luck!

Be sure to let that fan run at least 20 min after you shower until you can replace the exhaust hose with insulated hose. Sorry
about the hall ceiling, happens to the best of us. Fan and light combo looks great!

Good job on the bathroom remodel. Don’t sweat the mistakes. My old boss, Bill Carlson back in the 70s said if you don’t make a mistake once in a while you’re not doing enough work! I told him I must be the hardest working SOB that he’s ever known then with all the mistakes that I made.

Fished in wires don't need staples chet. It's even more fun when u find bats in the attic. Most times we fish down to the switch so u could do a stack switch. If u would have used a 14/3

Live in Canada. Venting into the attic is not good as it’ll add warm air to your cold air creating condensation into the attic. Mood and rot will happen over time. Also remember to use an insulated vent hose otherwise condensation will form from the temperature differential, with same problem. Ps if you put in a timer switch it’ll help with the vent time.
