Yea not overkill at all for mounting a circuit board, you totally needed to buy this tool. ;-) You can usually feel a sharp punch dropping into the cross section if you just run it along one of the score lines. I find I can do a better job with a manual punch compared to an automatic one. Not sure why, perhaps the tip lifts off as it triggers, someone should film it with a high-speed camera. Also you can steer a center punch around by holding it at an angle and hitting it again, if you were slightly out the first time. I do see how this gadget used to be useful for precision work, but I guess precision layout by hand is rare these days. Do get some transfer punches if you don't have any, they are quite useful.
nice piece of kit, not seen that before. I general just use a csk bit on my screwdriver, it has a super fine point an makes a nice hole.

over kill an engineer wouldn't use that small pop would do much quicker and cheaper its a toy
It's a "toy" only if accurate drilling marking isn't a priority!
