I got one when they came out. In the early 80's. Could do some cool stuff with that many voices. I even used it on a Willie Nelson album to simulate a harmonica. I messed with it till it sounded just like one. Also got the Memory Moog but the DX7 with the card cage full of DX7 modules quickly became the go to sound of that era. You could make it sound like anything too. You were only limited by your own imagination. It really had a good solid digital sound of it's own. For greasy analog those old Moogs, Arps and Oberheims still rule.
That synth made van Halen jump work. Lyle mays created his signature hollow Reed whistling soundsscapes with OB-8. Rush used it to stand out from the rock crowd. The OB-8 was the synth equivalent of the baseball utility man , all around usefulness. Thanks Claudio for bringing the history.
That synth wasn't use in van halen jump the synth that was used was the older version of it the oberheim ob-Xa but theory said that an even older version the ob-x was used in studio
Lyle Mays used an 8 voice or a 4 voice Oberheim, not an OB-8. Rush used an OB-X. Jump was recorded on an OB-X but the video features an OB-Xa. The OB-8 was not there for literally any of that stuff.

stunning, this is how good the synths were the first time around. nothing on the market right now compares to the breadth and depth of the original vintage synths.
I still have my OB-8 (and DMX and DSX) from 1982. One of my favorite "OB-8 albums" is _Into The Gap,_ by Thompson Twins, produced by Alex Sadkin. (Also, the stuff by The System, although I think David Frank may have used an OB-Xa, predecessor to the OB-8.) Oh... and *_no way_* Kool & the Gang's _Summer Madness_ (4:38) was recorded on an OB; it was recorded in 1973.
Luscious, simply luscious. This synth is the sonic canvas Prince used in creating what we now know as the Minneapolis Sound. Respect and RIP to the Purple One. Excellent video, your playing skills are incredible BTW.
What a wonderful sounding machine! Also loved your reactions at the weirder presets, you were like "wtf am I supposed to do with this?" The jamming was nice too, you seem like a great musician.
Jump was played on an OBX at first but it kept breaking down. The rest of the 1984 album was finished on an OBXA. Yes in the jump video he is playing an OBXa. The 5150 album was the OB8.
@Freline It was the OBX... The iconic sound of Jump was played on an Oberheim keyboard. According to Wikipedia: The Oberheim OB-Xa synthesizer was used in the video of “Jump”, and can be seen in video footage from their follow-up tour. However, it is a common misconception that it was used on the recording itself. The recording features its predecessor Oberheim OB-X, played through a Marshall amplifier stack. Even though it features a somewhat thicker sound than the OB-Xa, due to its discrete circuitry used instead of Curtis chips, it had a bad reputation of being unstable on the road. www.synthtopia.com/content/2009/06/30/van-halen-jump-demo-oberheim-obx-a/

Emuator vst or real analog? I've heard some Com Truise songs. It's rare to see synthwave artists use real analog syntheizers, not everyone has the privilege to use one. :(
I sold all my studio including all analog (exotics) like 30 years ago. MiniMoogs, Polaris, M12, OB8, P5, PPG, AX60. Never regretted it. It's a myth. We're 2019. No one cares. It's a myth. Blind tests have proven that people can not tell the difference in final music productions. On top, everybody is listening to crappy mp3. Including TH-cam compression...wake up. It's a myth. Sylenth or Electra-X sounds as good and maybe even better, on condition you use high quality DAC's. And I don't mean Motu or RME... One way or the other, nowadays it's cool to have analog synths while musically wise, it's a myth kept alive in special by factories and brands making you believe analog sounds better. Well, for starters, try to describe 'good' sound...can you tell me what standard I should use...??
