  • This was a sweet moment, capturing a pair of Little Ravens preening each other near the beach while listening to the sound of waves crashing.
Here's some info on preening from Audobon, written by Ellen Blackstone:
"Parrots of all kinds engage in a public display of affection called “allopreening,” and it’s probably this activity that gave lovebirds their name. Lovebirds may have the reputation for amor, but crows show affection, too.
You can see it a lot at this time of year. Male and female sit side by side on a wire or branch, often near their nest tree. One stretches out its neck, inviting the other to groom its feathers. The groomer, or preener, twirls individual feathers in its beak, often starting at the back of the head and working around to the front. The bird being groomed turns its head upward so the preener can reach the feathers under its chin. Its eyes close slightly, making it seem as if the bird is in a daze. The preener pauses; the preenee remains absolutely still, mesmerized. It’s even mesmerizing to watch.
Allopreening strengthens the pair bond between the birds. And it keeps their feathers in good shape, too." (Credit: Audobon)

"Australian crows and ravens are challenging to identify; concentrate on call, throat-hackles, behavior, and location. Calls usually fairly fast and lack the drawn-out wail typical of Australian Raven. Long throat hackles lend it a slightly bearded appearance. Often flicks wings when calling. Inhabits a broad area of southeastern Australia. The default crow/raven in Adelaide and Melbourne and forms very large flocks in high-elevation areas like the Australian Alps." (eBird)

I agree they are awesome and intelligent birds! I might have been a little fearful of them as a kid (from pop culture and movies perhaps!) and am glad that's all changed!

@@NatureFilmsByJohnKha Yes, they are often portrayed as evil birds, or birds helping evil people in movies etc, and many people do not like them. Your little clip shows them in a positive way, thank you.

This is beautiful footage. The slow motion makes it so much more special. We have a couple of ravens who visit our birdbath everyday and they often just hang out and preen each other like that. Unfortunately they always take off if we try to film them and our telephoto is just not up to catching such close ups from a distance. Just wondering which camera and lens are you using for this. It is really impressive👍

Thank you, I got very lucky here where I happened to be close and had my long telephoto lens. My equipment setup varies with each video however this was shot with a Sony A7III camera and the Sony 200-600mm lens. It's a good camera for slowmo at 1080p, I've upscaled it to 4K. Happy to help with any other questions you might have if you're considering a new setup.

Thank you. I appreciate your offer. I might take advantage of it when I loose my fear of spending even more time filming than I already do😐@@NatureFilmsByJohnKha
