    OMG, My brother and I had this machine and we had so much fun with our mates making stupid warriors movies down the woods. It was really revolutionary at the time to make a quick movie and then go to a friends house to watch it.
    Awesome times!
    I eventually switched to VHS-C because it It weighed a ton.
    GREAT POST!!!..total time machine moment!

    Tom Smith, Thank you for posting this video for us to enjoy. While VHS may not be the most enticing of the relic technologies for viewing since so many of us are familiar with it, you did an excellent job of providing commentary for it, and I learned quite a bit from your narrative. On the whole, I am interested in vintage tech items, and I have even thought about making videos on a few items I have in my collection to show, as well. Who knows, perhaps you might even see some from me one of these days.

    Audio/Video coming from this device is probably PAL in the UK, which is 25 fps, thus the higher pitch in the audio; Blu-Ray is probably at the standard cinematic rate of 23.976 fps, the audio would have a lower pitch compared to the tape.

    Use your VHS vcr videorecorders and blank VHS tapes to get even with the news media and tell your friends to just use their vcr videorecorders !

    The "ITV2" preset on TVs and VCRs made before November 1982 was for *Channel 4* , which didn't exist until then. It was the second independent / commercial UK TV service, in planning since the 60s/70s under the name "ITV-2" (which is also why it had much better coverage at launch compared with Channel 5's launch in 1997).
    So, it's not referring to ITV's ITV2 channel, which didn't launch until 1998 and has always been digital-only across the UK.

    Lovely blast of nostalgia. To clear up the questions - the full set of equipment for this would add a VK-C600E Colour Video Camera. The camera is connected just through the DIN as speculated (and has a trigger to play/pause). The camera records in colour, though it's viewfinder monitor is black and white.
    [Yes - I have all of this stuff, but my tuner is non-functional and thus it is all imminently being disposed of].

    I have three portable VCRs! A Hitachi VT-8E, A Panasonic NV-100EG and a Fisher VBR-330 Betamax! By the way, the switches at 6:55 are the PAL/SECAM colour system selectors :)

      No it is not. He literally said the first VHS camcorders did not have internal players, which is false. The JVC GR-C1 was the first consumer VHS camcorder, and yes yo could playback the tapes. The JVC GR-C1 was the second camcorder ever released for sale to consumers, the first was the Sony BetaMovie, which was a beta camcorder. The BetaMovie did not have playback, but VHS camcorders did. The JVC GR-C1 is a pretty famous camcorder, and is mostly called the Back To The Future camcorder, because it is used in the movie. Everybody that has seen Back To The Future can identify the JVC GR-C1. It is a big red VHS camcorder. Nonetheless, JVC created VHS, created VHS-C, and created the first VHS camcorders, and all the first VHS camcorders used VHS-C tapes and could be played back on the camcorder. One of the first models was also a portable VHS camcorder. It was the JVC GR-C7, and it is pretty small.

    Nice to see a VT-6500 again! I bought one of these new in 1982. It came with the silver bag, the blue battery (I finished up with 3 of them), a Hitachi Denshi GP6 (or VKC-800) camera and a mains power supply/charger. The latter was a smaller version of the one you showed, but without all the channel selection gubbins. It cost something like £1200 from J*ss*ps and my idea was to do wedding videos to pay for it on the side, but mainly for railway vids. One of the best things about the recorder was that you could lay down an audio track eg music and film over it - with a bit of luck.
    The trouble was that weddings tend to happen in churches, and as it was a tube camera, the results in low light weren't too hot. But I had some highly amusing times charging over most of northern England with other enthusiasts, videoing the likes of "Flying Scotsman" and Mallard". It also came in very handy when the children were small.
    Trudging up the embankment at Ribblehead in falling snow with that combo, plus tripod, was a body building exercise. (But it was only half the weight of the original JVC VHS recorder/camera combo, which I once hired!)
    Later on I did consider moving to a Super VHS camcorder, but had the common sense not to. I must say though that these full size VHS consumer devices could put up with a lot of punishment, which is more than can be said for horrible Mini DVD camcorders, which have rightly tanked. I don't think I ever managed to get one of THOSE to work consistently, usually because of the Mickey Mouse tapes.

    Picked up one of these the other day to go with an old tube camera I've got. It wasn't working but just required a belt change and was fine again. With those old top loaders, generally when you get one it won't initially be working but I've found that most of the time if you can get a belt kit and a cassette lamp thats pretty much all you need (maybe a pinch roller) and these are still often available quite cheap. I've had a few that I've restored to full working order for about 4 quid.
    Regarding the mono linear audio on VHS, I think the quality of it was a lot better on those early ones as they put a lot more effort into making it as good as possible whereas once Hi-Fi came in, i think the linear audio was more of an afterthought.

    • @swisstony123
      @swisstony123 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Nowt100, I've just picked up one of these as well, can you point me towards a "cassette lamp" you mentioned please and the belt kit. mine wants to play then stops.

    • @nowt1002
      @nowt1002 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      swisstony123 I think this one actually uses an infrared led rather than a lamp. It is the little bulb that sticks up into the cassette. Early machines use an small incandescent light bulb which you can see glowing. It shines a light into the cassette and there are two detectors, one on either side of the cassette, which by detecting the light let the machine know what position the tape is in. So if the tape is rewinding and gets to the start, light will shine through the clear leader strip onto the sensor and the machine will stop rewinding.
      If the machine is trying to load the tape then the lamp is most likely working as if it has blown, the machine will detect that and refuse to operate (this is to prevent damage to the tape). It will most likely be the belts have stretched. They can be bought from here:
      www.ebay.co.uk/sch/m.html?_odkw&_ssn=swle2000&_armrs=1&_osacat=0&_from=R40&_trksid=m570.l1313&_nkw=vt-6500&_sacat=0&_clu=2&_fcid=3&_localstpos&_stpos&gbr=1
      Do you have a service manual to tell you how to dismantle and reassemble it to get to the belts? You can download it here
      freeservicemanuals.info/en/servicemanuals/viewmanual/Hitachi/VT6500E/VTTU65E/
      You may be able to get away with just changing the belt that goes from the capstan to a plastic pulley, this is on the top of the deck and can be done (with a bit of dexterity) with only removing the main cover. Good luck.

    It's hilarious to think this is absolutely destroyed in every conceivable way for quality, storage space, size, weight and functionality by even a crappy feature phone these days. Imagine how crap our high end stuff of today will seem in 20-30 years?

    • @joshuasprucie8933
      @joshuasprucie8933 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can see why you are saying that but if you have a massive vhs collection like itsmynaturalcolour and don't want the expense of rebuying the films on dvd or taking the lengthy process of converting them this is a great piece of retro technology

    • @TalesOfWar
      @TalesOfWar 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Captain Technology I had a big VHS collection back in the day. Then I slowly replaced some classics with DVD's when they became a thing. Now I have them all on Blu-ray. It's worth it for the quality improvement if you ask me lol. They all get ripped to my media server then the boxes sit on a shelf.
      I was just making a general statement on how quickly tech advances too. Even a few years ago when the iPhone first came out that was the most amazing phone ever made, now a cheap bottom of the barrel basic Android phone makes it look like a toy in terms of hardware etc.
