Your description of the VISUAL this song give is SPOT ON! It's EXACTLY what I picture... and it's why I love it. This is probably a top 10 song for me - it is that good. Just the right amount of "80's" sound.
There are a few other songs that conjure up this same visual and feeling. Journey (I'll be alight without you... especially the ending)... Paul McCartney (no more lonely nights) and Rod Stewart (Downtown lights). Love these songs that create that feeling of driving at dusk... on a summer night. Great reaction!

This is my favorite song on the album, it's elegant, smooth and the beat never stops. Wonderful album!

This is my favourite Tears for Fears album. It's the one that I go back to time and time again if if I'm in the mood for a listen. You can definitely get the 'reluctance of having to play a hit song again and again at their concerts' vibe from the track. Don't worry I'm sure the community has given you access to enough material to keep you busy for a while, that you won't need to do album reviews to keep things going. 😀

Just stumbled across your channel and have loved going back over all the Tears For Fears reactions you've put up! I wish more people dug into their whole catalogue like you have, they have so many gems outside of their big hits as you now know ha. Glad I'll be here for the start of Raoul, it has some of my favorite tracks for sure. Also make sure you listen to the deluxe edition, the b-sides from that era are just as good as the album tracks if not better in some cases!

I agree, because of Matt I've discovered songs by them I would have probably never listened to. And yes TFF catalog of great music is ridiculous!!!

Hey there! Thanks for the comment, I really appreciate it. And yeah, I only had a limited experience of TFF back as a kid, but this deep-dive has shown me just how special they are as a group. Cheers, glad to have you aboard for the journey!

Elemental is a great TFF album and the "Goodnight Song" one of my favorites in the album. I just love Roland's voice so much!

Another great review Matt, thank you. The song that Goodnight Song is referencing is Shout. Shout is always played as an encore, Roland considered dropping it from the set when Curt left. I look forward to your next TFF venture in Raoul, there are some good songs on the album but it is my least played TFF album, although it does contain another duet with Oleta Adams in the lovely Me And My Big Idea's. If you get chance to get the deluxe version it is well worth it, there is a track on the deluxe called 'Until I Drown' which is one of my favourite TFF songs, in my opinion the structure of the song is a bit of a template for 'Please Be Happy' and it has a trumpet, which lifts the song beautifully, the lyrics are dark but the song itself is gorgeous.

Hey, Michael! I saw TFF in 1993, and of course fans were calling out for some of the early, Curt on lead vocals hits, but Roland avoided playing them. Finally, he did start one, only to stop and say "I didn't sing that one!" Hilarious!

Oh right on! I did one New Order reaction (the ever-popular "Blue Monday"), but I'd love to explore them further. Great shout, I'll see if I can make that happen soon! Cheers, Steve.

"Nothing ever changes unless there's some pain." A theme that runs through several songs on Elemental. And another song that works on more than one level, whether specifically about "that old swan song" Shout or taken in a big picture way with the breakdown of TFF. I like that it's a more traditional band song, about as far away from early TFF as you can get, and it helps book end the album with the more electronic opener Elemental.
Lines in the "Get some honesty, take the best of me..." verse, lines like "...let the real fool show. I should have stayed round to break the ice" do show some regret, maybe even sadness at the way things ended with Curt. "Blame the crowd," not just for wanting to hear the hits over and over, but for helping push TFF to its breaking point. The bigger they became, the more demands that were put on Curt and Roland, more TV appearances, more shows, get on with making that next album, the less time they had to enjoy any of their success. They should have been having the times of their lives, but weren't, and with all the other problems going on within the band something had to give. And we're back to "nothing ever changes unless..."
Good analysis of the title, and it's funny how Matt reacted to the beginning and end of the song, saying it seems like going on a road trip, because of the video for Goodnight Song. A performance video of the band set up in a bar interspersed with travel clips to show life on the road while touring. And sonically, this band-oriented track is an indicator of things to come on Raoul and the Kings of Spain, with much of that album being written by Roland and Alan Griffiths, working the songs out with the band during the Elemental tour.

Saludos!

Hi! I just wanted to point out a reaction of Matt's to a tune by Cydelix called Anadromi that is part of his Psybient/Downtempo/Ambient/Chillout playlist. I had seen Michael's comment, as Matt mentioned, about rewatching his videos just for Matt's more intense reactions to songs like Brian Wilson Said and Start of the Breakdown. You will definitely enjoy this Cydelix reaction from that standpoint. Everyone has also been bringing up Tomcats Screaming Outside, an absolute must, an album with some drum and bass songs. I about lost my dang mind listening to Anadromi when the same style percussion kicked in rather unexpectedly in a beautiful piece of music. Just thought some of you might find it interesting! -- Kim

You rock, Kim! Appreciate this so much! And seriously, "Anadromi" is such a remarkable tune, I'm very happy it resonated with you too.
And you may be happy to know my plan is to start reacting to Tomcats Screaming Outside soon! As you said, a few people have mentioned that, and I figure with my musical tastes, it's likely to be a great journey. Thanks again, Kim!
