    My grandad was the team leader for the first successful complete descent of Low's Gully in 1998, it was achieved by a 27 strong joint Malaysian-British team, they filmed it for channel 4 (would love to find the footage) not long before going my grandad broke his foot in training but didn’t let him hold him back, it was his last big thing he did.

    My wife and I spent five days in mount kinabalu national park . I was surprised the young employees in the information centre new nothing of the disastrous british expedition . Mount kinabalu is in a very interesting location . Great video. We are planning on returning. I have also read SOS and Descent into Chaos, both very interesting books about what happened on the decent of the Gully.

      @@snowymatrix I actually wanted to go and see Lows Gully from the village but it was difficult and expensive. One would have had to hire a van and drive . I got the impression the national park were out to make as much money from tourists as possible and it's showing with the amount of people paying a lot of money to reach the summit.

      Climbing the mountain have become very expensive even for the locals, more so for foreigners. They made big money out of the foreign climbers, packaging the climbs with food and accommodation with a five star hotels

    ITV made a TV movie called “The Place of the Dead” about this in 1997 (starring Greg Wise and Dougray Scott). I remember watching both that and this documentary as a teenager when they first came out.

    They seemed to have gone into this operation less equipped and with less knowledge of the terrain than we were as cub scouts age 10 trekking across Dartmoor

      The two commanding officer were very arrogant and would not listen which they were reprimanded at the army board of inquiry. If I'm remembering correctly no one had ever been in the gully or that far up from the other side to know the terrian. The locals at that time feared it for mystical reasons. I would blame the Rupert's to use their words the army lads were mostly blameless. The five that went in ahead should have stayed together in the gully maybe. The 3 Hong Kong lads were not climbers and thought they were just going to the summit of the mountain. They and the two commanding officers should not have entered the gully and events after they entered proved that. All of them were lucky to escape the gully with their lives.

      Hike Camp the two army officers and the three Hong Kong Chinese soldiers nearly did. It was only the bravery of these two guys along with the two other guys who you don't see in this doc that got out and raised the alarm!

    • @HikeCamp
      @HikeCamp 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So they saved the officer who insisted they disobeyed orders... what an ass he is. 😠

    • @snowymatrix
      @snowymatrix  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, they were kind of disobeying the orders of the officer in charge. If they had followed the commanding officer's orders they would have all died in the gully. It was the decision taken to enter the gully and not wait for the officers and Hong Kong soldiers that saved all their lives. This is what the Army Board of Inquiry found and it's obvious now with hindsight that it was the correct thing to do. The two officers were not up to the challenge physically and the Hong Kong lads were technically unable to do it since they didn't even know how to abseil! It took them days to enter the gully when the other party did it in hours! In the end the two officers and Hong Kong lads were hold up on the rocks close to starvation and writing their last wills and testament when they were found thanks to the other soldiers making it out the gully and raising the alarm at the nearest village. The British Army didn't even know they were missing! It was quite a shameful incident for the army since this matter made world headlines at the time...

    Here in Scotland in 1996, the Army sent officer cadets into the Mamore mountains in March with no climbing experience or equipment. They had to be helicoptered off by the RAF and mountain rescue teams. The Army really screwed up and claimed they’d launch an inquiry. Not sure what happened, but surely even the dumbest Rupert couldn’t fail to understand the dangers involved in sending people up a mountain in wintery conditions when they’ve no equipment or experience. Makes me wonder who allows these kinds of expeditions. This one was bad too and was all about ego and cock waving.

    Oh come on, there is a lot of drama queening going on. WTF are the villagers crying for ….. couple of foreigners they have helped for a couple of days and they are sobbing their hearts out. Life doesn't work like that.
    Seems like an amazing escape from an horrendous place ….. all the fault of the commanding officer with no survival skills of his own.

      Borneo was once ruled by the British and whites if you like were once revered by the simple minded villages as superior beings and have converted to Christianity wholeheartedly. The older folks still have that old mentality that Whiteman are superior as evidenced by of them kissing the hands of the soldiers. They were probably awed that the whitemen whom they once saved from starvation actually came back to thanked them.
