    Loving this series, I too will stop by a creek or pond for 30 or 40 min, it’s just so relaxing & fun, as a 57 yr old newbie I’m having a blast & am catching a lot of fish here in Pa thanks to your vids & tips. My ultralight is my go to setup, it was cool watching you land em, nice catches!

    You should use 6lb. Theres never a situation where I'd rather have 4lb over 6lb aside from really really clear still waters for spooky pressured albeit small trout. I've caught plenty 4- 5 pounder bass, I've caught 28" steelhead, and I've caught my PB large and smallmouth bass with 6lb pline flouroclear on my ul

    • @FishAnything

      Very true. I have no problem quickly cranking decent bass in with 6 pound line.

    • @pinkadam8989
      @pinkadam8989 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Johnathan Lo That's why I use flouroclear, ive noticed better results than with regular mono, but you also have a good point that light line can really tire out or kill big fish. For very specific purposes I'll carry a spool with 4lb on, but 99% of the time I use 6 for UL

    Great video! That brought back so many memories of my “UL Only” days. Bummer with the juicy big one; but yes it does happen. But it is amazing what you can actually reel in on a small rod and light line. If there wouldn’t have been brush or the weeds guaranteed you would of had it. Keep up the great work and great videos. I love watching to UL videos.

    That happened to me on my Ned Rig setup today in the Potomac while looking for Smallies. A very large cat (I'm guessing 15 - 20lbs) took the Finesse TRD Coppertruece on my 12lb braid/6lb fluoro leader, and absolutely took off with it. As it was getting close to spooling me, I realized that I was either going to lose the fish, or lose the fish AND $15 of braid. I opted for the former and tightened up the drag. :-/ On the upside, I think I broke my water-speed record in that kayak while that horse was dragging me all over the place.

    Most important thing about ultralight fishing with light line is set your drag at 20-25%. 4 pound test, that would be 1 pound of drag. So as long as you’ve got good line and a tight knot, the first fish would not have broken the line even if you didn’t take it so easy. It’s still fun playing them though.

  • @torresfishingFL
    @torresfishingFL 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Ultra light bassin is so much fun! The biggest bass I’ve landed on my ultralight so far was around 4 to 5 pounds and it put up an awesome fight! I laugh when people have 10 rods and reels for different situations and act as if you NEED all that equipment. Don’t get me wrong they all have their place BUT there’s nothing as fun as fighting a 2-4 pound fish on ultralight gear. Well tbf you cant rip 7lb bass out of log piles and heavy veg with spinning tackle unless you're carrying around catfish rods which most bass anglers aren't. Refusing to use different gear stops you from fishing where the big fish are at certain times of year.

      Thanks for helping out Tim! And Major, you can really fish any time of the day in the fall which is really nice! I’d focus on throwing moving baits such as crankbaits, topwaters, and spinnerbaits because the fish will start actively feeding right about now! If you’re down south, it might be another month before that happens so you will want to fish in the evenings to increase your odds 🤠🎣

    I had the same issue on a Ultralight rod, 4 lb pline mono. Sucked terribly. Fishing in a pond with a LOT of activity. Sunny late afternoon 5pm on March 8,2022. Fishes were looking for warm water and feeding on the bank, like 5 feet away. Pitched and got snagged one a small brnach, and the line snapped. Soo mad. Then tried again to re-tie. Line snapped again. Very frustrating for seeing fish jumping out. Of thepond water and saying “ come and get me”. I will do 6lb mono. Wasted money on 2lb and 4lb mono.

    • @FishAnything
      @FishAnything  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah it can be tough! I personally like the lighter line for most applications but if you are fishing from the bank and chasing larger bass, going with a bit heavier gear is the best strategy!

  • @micahspilker9322

    I like this ultralight series but I have an honest question. Why throw a senior on an light power rod? A 4 inch senko weighs about 1/4 of an ounce and a 5 inch weighs about 1/3. The majority of my finesse fishing is done with ML rods rated for lures 1/8-1/2. I fish tiny cranks and jigs on my ultralight rod but feel like casting a stick bait with them isn’t ideal. I’m guessing you like the fight on light gear but personally I feel like they cast slightly better on a ml. Not trying to stir the pot just curious of your motives.

      100% that’s a great question Micah! Honestly I was just trying it because I like to play with the ultralight 🤣🤣 yes it would be much better to toss on a ML or M rod that is a more standard bass outfit. But I am all about the fight and it’s just for fun in this series. The next season will likely be more technique-focused so I will be moving into using the proper gear for the job. ok i just got into fishing and i need some help, my rod is a light “action” rod 7 foot rod. it’s apart of the micro series shakespeare line and i want to start bass fishing. i don’t know if it will be good for bass fishing because of how light it is and i’m afraid it will break. i want to buy soft plastics and use texas rigs some help would be nice

    • @ryan242
      @ryan242 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      i want to also buy those hooks for the texas rigs but again i’m scared it will be heavy with the bullet weights

    • @FishAnything
      @FishAnything  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A 7' Light can handle bass but you are exactly right, don't use too heavy of gear. I would stick to smaller gauge hooks and weights < 1/4oz personally. Try out Mule Jigs!

    • @ryan242
      @ryan242 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Online Outdoorsman thanks! this helped a lot so if would use a texas rig or even a new rig i should always go light weight. so if i do use it will that be fine? also this is an ultra light we’re talking about right?

    • @FishAnything
      @FishAnything  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is a Light (one step above Ultralight). You are fine to use texas rigs but I would use a really low gauge hook and light weight / small plastic. 1/8oz bullet weight with a little 1/0 hook and small plastic should be good!

    • @ryan242
      @ryan242 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Online Outdoorsman thank you for replying, i have a lot of questions and if you don’t mind i will overwhelm you with questions if that’s ok. what do you think about weightless texas rig. could i use a wacky rig?

    What size president reel is that

    • @FishAnything
      @FishAnything  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Size 20. A bit too small in my opinion, I think the 25 is better for UL fishing

    Throughout the video I was wondering why you havent switched your reel's handle to the other side. You seem to cast right handed and you keep switcing hands.

      Funny you mention that. I simply learned to reel with my RH however I am currently trying to become ambidextrous so I can use reels on either side haha. In time I shall master it!

      I use 10lb braid down to a 2lb fluoro leader since they have the same diameter... I don’t break off on fish cause of the fg knot

    • @torresfishingFL
      @torresfishingFL 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s overkill for an ultra light, all you really need is 6 to 10 pound line for bass, in which I prefer 8, plus I actually caught my personal best bass at 8 pounds on an ultralight with 8 pound mono!

    Ultralight bass fishing in the summer stresses the bass out to much. If the water is warm use a set up that will land the fish fast. Animals have rights, as sportsmen we must respect the animals we pursue.

    • @FishAnything
      @FishAnything  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Definitely agree for larger fish! I tend not to target big bass on UL these days for that very reason. Usually when I UL bass fish, I know I’m going to catch a lot of 8-12” fish which is well suited for the gear choice.
      I appreciate you drawing attention to this subject!

      Appreciate the feedback! When shallow weeds line the bank heavily, I like to throw them into open water to avoid them getting bogged down in heavy vegetation and struggle to swim.
