Induction Stovetop in Camper Van - How Much Power Will You Use?

  • I am very glad I went with an induction stovetop/cooktop rather than a gas or propane stove!
    There is something special about knowing you're utilizing energy from the sun and from driving to cook your food. Energy consumption is a big consideration when you rely on induction to cook in the van life, but I have found a way to make it work quite comfortably.
    It was also a huge benefit to be able to avoid drilling an extra hole in the van (if I were to have gone with propane, I'd have had to vent it properly). Space is also limited so avoiding the use of a giant propane canister was a plus.
    ///
    So, how much energy does it take to cook with an induction stovetop in my van build? Well, here are a few useful benchmarks to give you an idea. Overall, I've been very happy with my setup using electricity instead of gas/propane!
    It took about 15-minutes and 18 amp-hours of energy to boil 32 ounces of water.
    It took about 6-minutes and 8 amp-hours of energy to boil enough water for a cup of coffee.
    It took about 12-minutes and 9 amp-hours to fry 4 eggs over hard.
    The stove I use: amzn.to/3atMfnG
    The induction pan I use: amzn.to/3cIKXYv
    The induction pot I use: amzn.to/2O70d7l
    My inverter: amzn.to/3hmr20o
    My batteries: amzn.to/3bFB5wf
    My isolator: amzn.to/3iega5W

    A few years back, I put a portable induction burner in my van and never looked back. The burner was portable, but I mounted it to my counter, so it took up space (it was not recessed). This year, I rebuilt my kitchen with a friend's help. The burner is now in a pull-out drawer. I absolutely love cooking via a flame-free device that I power with solar panels. It is just cool. I usually have enough solar to cook, but I also have a little butane burner for emergencies (no sun) or when I want to cook something greasy outside.

    My husband and I are building our new (well it's a 2019) but it's new to us Dodge Ram Promaster and I'm getting lots of great ideas from watching other people build theirs. I want an induction cook top and we're going with an all- in- one micro convection, grill and air fryer to save space. I cooked with micro-convection instead of my stove for many years and I loved it. Thanks for the tips.

    When you are talking about "induction specific pans" it is actually many that is compatible because your pan just need to be magnetic. Most pure iron, cast iron, steel and some stainless steel works

    • @JeremiahLuke
      @JeremiahLuke  2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      something I didn't realize until later! I think the larger category IS the compatible pans while the incompatible ones makeup a much smaller grouping.

Thought about getting rid of as much propane appliances as possible (keeping the frig hookup and water heater hookup). Already chucked the old LP stove and oven. 6:45 based on the numbers you've provided, you should be fine on solar alone under full-sun conditions
    Capacity used to cook: (18Ah (pasta water) + 8Ah (coffee) + 9Ah (eggs)) * 12V = 420Wh
    Even assuming your panels are performing at 50% of their stated capacity, that's 400W * 50% = 200W, which means you should fully recharge in 420Wh / (200W) = 2.1 hours

    • @JeremiahLuke
      @JeremiahLuke  2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      and most days it worked perfectly just like that! Sadly a lot of days the panels would be dirty or partially blocked or the sun would go away for a while or I would cook pasta AND vegetables etc.
      But, on the good days, the best of days, I'd set my crockpot up and leave it running all day in full sunshine while I skied in order to come back to full batteries and a van that smells of lemon garlic chicken :)

    I am curious about the fold away fan on your van wall, also great video that really eliminates a lot of the techno speak and just gives a down to earth demonstration of how much battery drain an induction stove draws. We have a 200 a/h battery system with a 200 watt solar panel set up. Just ordered a 2000-watt pure sine inverter and am shopping for an induction tabletop unit. This was very helpful.

    This is just to share my experience and to educate others. I have lived mobile since 2016 in several vehicles. I have settled no a truck and truck camper.
    First I appreciate the time you took to create the video, I appreciated the info.
    I would like to ask for everyone considering mobile living, how much your total solar system ?
    I buy campers for about $500-$2000 max. I then live in then for one year or so then resell for a profit. I only buy campers with working propane fridges and stoves.
    I have found propane for $1-3.25/gallon
    On average 2 x 8 gallon bottles will last me about a month. That is will fridge and freezer on medium and cooking/coffee making etc 2-3 times a day. So that would calculate to about $16-$52 per month. But let’s even double that to be fair $32-$104/month. That’s about $192-$624/yr on low end and $384-$1248/yr on extreme high end. So after say one year the camper would cost $692 on low end and $3248/yr on extreme high end and this includes cost of living space.
    Yes I know cost truck isn’t factored in to this but truck prices depending on your capabilities in fixing it varies.
    Would like to know how your costs compare. Thanks

      @@JeremiahLuke Maybe “fortunately”? 😉 I wanted to say that my husband bought me a crockpot that he found at a yard sale for my birthday last year. Here’s what’s really cool about it: it has the type of plug you can use in a cigarette lighter outlet. I’ve had my camper van for about six months now. So, I’m still pretty new to the lifestyle. I bought my van unfinished and have been working to get it road ready.
      I just got my small solar operation going and my “control panel” (not sure that’s what it’s called). It has the switches for the things that are already connected to the solar as well as two USB outlets AND (she finally gets to the point) *there is the cigarette lighter type of outlet on it.* I haven’t tried it yet, but I am really psyched to have a crockpot that can operate directly off the solar. It’s a nice medium size also and will fit in my sink.
      Happy Trails and Happy Camping cooking to you.

    Awesome, thanks for making this, we are going to go with induction cooktop in our van build as-well, would you say 200 amp hour batteries is enough?

    • @JeremiahLuke
      @JeremiahLuke  3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I would definitely go with 400 if you have the space and the funds.
      I cook fairly simple meals for ONE and that already pushes the system to it's brink (when I'm being liberal with my usage and started at 100% SOC).
      If you had 400 I think you would have very little trouble making it work. I would DEFINITELY get a good isolator hookup (mine is 140a and I love it so much. Wouldnt change a thing).
      Also, possibly look into a crockpot :) I just added that little magical thing into my life and I am a changed (single, terrible cook of a) man.

    Word of caution that is not emphasized enough when cooking with induction: your system has to have proper gauge wires from the battery to the inverter AND the connections must be tight. At over 50 amps current draw, too thin wires and/or loose connection will cause the wires to heat up and if left alone, WILL cause a fire.

Only issue I see is during winter I need a diesel heater and also something that protects the batteries from being charged when too cold.

    • @JeremiahLuke
      @JeremiahLuke  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It consumes quite a lot of energy! If you do not have enough battery storage (maybe more than 3-400ah) then you likely won't last more than 1-2 days of cooking without power input (driving and charging via alternator or solar or plugging in via shore power). I preferred it and enjoyed it vs using gas but you have to be conscious of how much energy you are using and charging etc.. it is like a game you have to play constantly.

    • @JeremiahLuke
      @JeremiahLuke  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Is the stove plugged directly into the inverter or into the outlet?
      First thought is to try a larger breaker. 20a is about 240 watts which is really only enough to run the stove on the lowest setting (if even that).
      I had a 100a+ breaker between the batteries and the inverter (which the stove was plugged directly into). I only tripped it once when i was running both stoves at once on high...

      @@JeremiahLuke I’ve tried direct plug Into the inverter and also off the breaker 20a, 30a etc. The problem repeats on any scenario. It’s the surge power on the stoves internal start up the moment it’s plugged in that’s effecting the inverter. If I use any other smaller draw item I don’t have the issue. Do you know of a resister or maybe a voltage regulator that would reduce the initial startup surge? Can you do a video on your Elecrical set start to end of system?

    Is amp hours the same as watt hours?

    • @johnnyfearlesszrx
      @johnnyfearlesszrx 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No.
      Amp hours, is how many amps are used over an hour, you need to multiply amps by volts to get watt hours.
      e.g. Using 10 amps from a 12 volt battery for 1 hour would use 10 amp hours from the battery but that would have used 120 watt hours.
      Watt hours is the correct way to measure power used as amp hours is only useful if you know the battery voltage used.
      Around 90% of a lithium battery is usable capacity but the usable capacity of a lead acid leisure battery is 50%.
      Using more than that will reduce battery life significantly.
      One more thing to remember, when you pull a heavy load from a battery it will give a lot less than it's normal useable capacity.
      A bit like driving a car fast will reduce MPG.

    Yay! A video about using an induction stovetop in a vanbuild. I already have a couple of them and thought I'd love to include it in my plans, but have been disheartened as it wasn't showing up much anywhere (assumed this meant people were ruling it out for good reasons). I also love pasta, and was wondering about the pasta test (and how you cook pasta). You mentioned bringing enough water to a boil to make pasta, but didn't mention that you continued boiling it during the cooking time. Do you just get it up to temperature and then let the pasta set in there with the lid on? Or do you put the pasta in while you bring it to a boil, stirring now and then, and are a fan of the al dente pasta? (I like mine overcooked.) Thanks for sharing the kind of information that will help all of us make great plans!

    • @JeremiahLuke
      @JeremiahLuke  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      HA! This is so funny. I did not even realize I left out the actual COOKING part of the pasta hahah.
      I do continue to boil the water after the pasta is put in (after the boil is reached). And I do also like it al dente. So, I would say it takes another 30% of the energy it took to bring it to a boil to finish the pasta. Not nearly as much as it takes to bring the water to a boil to begin with though.
      I was in a similar position with you when choosing between propane / induction...I am so glad I went with induction though. It feels super amazing to know I am using the energy I've generated from driving or harvested from the solar.
      I would highly encourage looking into crockpot setup too! That in combo with my induction is just perfect.
      I will set the crockpot up to cook chicken or a roast all day (while I ski or surf or drive - if there is enough sun, the 400 watts of solar almost perfectly offset the crockpot on low), and then sauté something on the stove and combine the two for a good meal :)
      Hope this helps :)

    Actually you do not have to use specially made pots and pans. Copper and Aluminum will not work. Anything ferrous will work so cast iron, stainless steel, high carbon steel will work just fine. Anything a refrigerator magnet will stick to will work. So try the magnet on pans you already have before you buy anything new and/or buy an induction burner. Chances are you'll be alright with most of your pans. 😃

    Ah alone are not a very good unit for amount of energy because on itself it's not very telling. I assume you're running a 12V system, translating to 480 Wh of electric energy for what you did, which is reasonable. With 400 Wp you may get 1 KWh of electricity on a regular day, so this should let you cook daily. Add in the battery buffer and you've got a really solid system. Props!
