  • 2023 was a year that brought lots of challenges, lots of success, and an awesome amount of growth both in our capacities, our offerings, our community, and our crew. We could not be more excited about how this year went, or more grateful to everyone who has supported us along the way.
To name a few of the things that happened this year, which Nathan has done an incredible job of capturing in this video...
The biggest add at the beginning of the year was our new 32' Center Console named Zenmar. This boat gave us the ability to run charters more comfortably, and with much greater range. We were able to take a large number of trips to the Coronado Islands for our Freediving and Spearfishing courses, but we also did some offshore spearfishing charters, including a few overnight charters at San Clemente Island. Being able to explore the incredible structure and kelp at the island was one of the coolest things we got to do this year...we can't wait to go back!
Zenmar also got us some great encounters with marine wildlife, including Gray, Humpback, and Fin Whales off of our coast. Encountering those animals never gets old, and we are excited to be doing more whale watching excursions next year.
In the shop, we really stepped up our gear game. We offered speargun rigging services, had a rigging seminar with Captain Bly, and now have a full array of freediving and spearfishing gear. As we got this all together we decided our logo should grow some teeth as well, and you may have seen our knife/snorkel logo on some of our new merch. We like it...a lot :)
In the off season we started The Weekly Deep, our video series, which worked great in bad weather but once the summer picked up we were too busy to keep up with it. We did put a lot into our TH-cam channel in addition to that series as well.
The deepest man in the world, Alexey Molchanov, visited us not once, but twice! He ran a pool session early in the year, and came line diving with us in early November. Always a treat having that guy around.
Our Sunday line diving sessions have always been, and will always be, a staple of our community. Every Sunday, weather permitting, we were out there and almost always with a full showing of 12-16 divers, in addition to students who were taking classes and of course our instructors. Hot dogs were slung far and wide....to the point that many of us now crave hot dogs after diving!
In addition to the Sunday line dives, we started running more merlady frolics for the girls, largely thanks to the addition of Brittani and Delaney to our crew. These gatherings were a huge hit, and tons of fun so keep an eye out for those in the new year!
Both PADI and Molchanovs courses were run throughout the year, with a record number of students who learned the safety and techniques of this incredible sport. And many of them are still training with us, and progressing to deeper depths.
Chris became a Molchanovs Instructor Trainer, and the first Just Get Wet Molchanovs Instructor Class was ran in La Ventana in November. Brittani was in attendance, and we managed to get in a dive with some Sperm whales! We will be going back to La Ventana a lot in the future, don't you worry. Our other trips included Kona where we dove with Justin Lee, and the Palapas Ventana liveaboard spearfishing trip. We had a lot of work to do dialing in the new boat and upgrading the shop, but for 2024 we have a lot of trips on offer, as well as the return of our pool training program, Catalina Sailing and Freediving Excursions, and some luxury overnight spearfishing charters here in town. It's hard to imagine us topping 2023, but we are gonna do our absolute best!
