Let’s salute our beautiful musical heritage and as carried on with these superb young folks!
sweet! I love these lyrics. The dance is popular in UK but the words are different. This is a beautiful rendition and it is good to know the roots and the real thing.
Perfect harmony, perfect lead, perfect playing, perfect everything! This is music that blesses the soul, especially when it's done as perfect as this!
Such perfect harmony!!! Rare to hear such talent nowadays, play this song every time I see it on TH-cam.
My grandmother played this on her piano a lot when I was a boy nearly 60 years ago. I love it!
Wonderful. Just wonderful. My parents both used to sing this song, and this was perfectly done. Brought tears to my eyes.
This was my grandpa's favorite song. I used to listen to it on the old islanders phonograph it brings back memories thank you and God bless you 🙏❤
I love this band. I love the two pretty girls. The Guys are quite to
Beautiful music
Cant get enough of them. From south africa
Wow! Words can't explain how great this performance is. I loved it, and I could play it over many times! Thanks, "Empty Bottle String Band." This is GREAT! God bless you, Brother Charlie
I can't get enough of this video. the girl sang this song beautifully and when the guy joined in it sounded even better. All four of them did a wonderful job.
For those who may be interested, the melody to Redwing and Union Maid are, yes, the same, as others have noted. Both however are taken from Schumann's opus 68. The melody was also used by Arlen in the score for Wizard of Oz. Great melody and great adaptations.
Love hearing Ryan play any instrument. Beautiful young girl singing & the harmony singer nailed it too! I do hear a bass too!
Absolutely lovely! I loved this song as a young girl and Empty Bottle String Band did a lovely job of it!!
I keep coming back to this, can't get enough!!! Love it so much!! ♥
My fav version on You Tube like WV grandma and grandpa used to play on fiddle and guitar back in the 50’s bless you all
Fantastic, beautiful playing and singing, they are the tops just love them.
The bees knees and the ants pants simply wonderful, thank you so much.
Best version I've heard yet, great fiddle and harmonies. I used to think Red Wing was a bird when I heard this song a young kid. I didn't make the connection that Red Wing was the Indian maid.
My father used to sing it this way: "There once was an Indian maid, who lived in a house in Spain." I think that was his own original cover of the song.
T.S. Eliot in The Wasteland quotes another version:
"Oh the moon shines bright on Mrs. Porter
And on the daughter of Mrs. Porter
They wash their feet in soda water
And so they oughter,
To keep them clean."
beautifully done, thanks for sharing
Awesome, the music of my grandmother comes back, and performed with natural instruments... Congratulations band 👏
Really good fiddle shuffle. Relaxed and great dynamics and intonation. Truly talented. Singer has a good strong voice in that key
They're good, thanks for posting!
I like this version of it on the fiddle very well done, great singing too
My mother (God rest her soul) sang this sweet song to all 7 of us many years ago.I'm 85 and have 5 living siblings who grew up listening to this kind of music
A classic tune performed well.Nicely done.
That's some mighty fine picking and singing!! Bravo!! ♥
Wonderful vocals...danceable music...lovely!!
Traditional music rules for me and my string collection.
OUTSTANDING !!!!!! BRAVO!!! Love it. Thank You!
Great job! This was a staple of my dad on harmonica. Love the way yall did it!
This is excellent! Really enjoyed it, and wish I had some of their talent.
I love to hear you sing I listen over and over
Great rendition of an old song
That's some mighty fine pickin' & singin'!

Love this tune and performance
I do play it over and over
It is priceless.
My grandma sang this to me as a kid. Her version was a bit different tho. Good times. :)
an instrumental version on "Broadcast recordings" featuring Ken Giffin came out in the fifties.
Best Redwing I have ever ever heard. My brother used to play it on his guitar. He was killed in car crash in 1961 in Calif.
That's neat
Beautiful. Thank you
Terrific renditions of this beautiful music; I recall Hank Snow playing this tune with Chet Atkins on an album from about 1960. Great music.
The lyrics for this song are a challenge!
My grandmother sang this song to me when, I was a little girl.
This is great stuff love to catch this band! Thanks for posting!

WEATHERFORALLENDALE AND A
They are fantastic.
Well done. Still strange to hear it this way for me though. Never realized it was an old folk song. I knew this as the lullaby my mother sang me to sleep with, sang about 100x slower.
Wonderful.
This melody originated from Schumann’s “The Happy Farmer”
Love it!!!
Just a masterpiece for pretty red wing...
Good job!
Good job.
I love this version of this song.. hopefully you will have Red Wing (studio version) on your next CD -- yes that's a subtle request from over here in Australia
Excellent!
Always have loved this great song. Woody Guthrie used the melody to write one of the greatest union songs of them all, "Union Maid." I always preferred Slim Whitman's cover but the Empty Bottle String Band's is every bit as enjoyable to listen to. Well, done--guys and girls!!
Help I can't stop watching this.
Love that picking. My mother sang this to me. Great
I love this group, however I fear they are no longer collaborating. The latest video I can find on TH-cam is 2019....Whoa Mule, which is my favorite by this group. If any knows of anything newer please post that here in these comments.
Mighty fine!
Love It!
Grandma! They're playing for you❤
Brilliant!
Such a sweet sweet chune
....a great band....love Kristal singing....come to England again soon....
Very beautiful and very beautifully done!!👏💕👍✝️🌹💓💓🛐❤️💗✡️☦️🔯🕎🎆☮️💞☸️✋
excelent!!!!!!!!
Woody Guthrie loved this song and used a variation of of the melody to write his classic union song, Union Maid.
In 1915 Edward Stanning adapted the lyrics in response to English newspaper criticism of Charlie Chaplin (originally English) wealthy and safe in the USA instead of coming back to volunteer for war. Check out: "the moon shines bright on Charlie Chaplin".
There are several other less well-known versions set to this music - but I don't think they have been recorded.
Nice
Krystal is playing an Art & Luther guitar.
awesome
Muito bom😊
Do you guys still perform?
Don`t know who was the orignal group was, this group does an excellant job. Does any body know when this song was published & by who. I remember it from back in the 1950`s??
Most sources say 1907 for these lyrics and the melody by a different composer of that era.
Didn't understand a word the lady sang sounds great.
I think the problem is with the sound recording rather than her articulation.
It’s the song it’s self it’s quite hard to sing x

Must have carrots in your ears
Turn your hearing aids on
My hearing at the center of human speech is fine. It goes down fast after that. With my hearing aids in, I understand her much better.
Love to see untriggered youth.
I know this as Union Maid.
She has had singin leçons?
Real deal
Run Toto RUN!!!!
You guys are soooo good. I want to buy your music. But where?
There are two CD's currently offered through the Empty Bottle web site "Shop" page. www.emptybottlestringband.com/shop/
(There was another limited production CD sold the first year the band formed that is no longer listed for sale.)
jlw37663 Sonibchecked it out and I didn't see, "Stop kickin my dog around".
Saw the band in Knoxville today. I really enjoyed listening to them. When did the band change from four girls to two guys and two girls?
To my knowledge there were never four girls. Early on Hasee Ciacco appeared occasionally but she was starting to tour with "The Barefoot Movement" but made only occasional appearances such as Song Of The Mountains.. Tyler Hughes (a guy) has always been there. The fiddler Ryan Nickerson came along shortly after the band formed and has been there ever since. Stephanie and Kristal have been there since the beginning.
The fiddle player looks like Ben Foster!!
The dancers dancing' is trying to pull the players tempo down.
This is going to show my age but I remember John Wayne sang this song in on of his movies these young folks do a much better job sorry Duke
wow...not plugged in..
Can I marry your pretty Bass player or is she already taken?
In general, bass players are either broke and homeless or married. She doesn't look destitute, so . . .
Dr. Stephanie Jeter is married. Doctor of Physical Therapy.
She has it all great voice great face. Someone give her some money to get all that hair under control and she is pretty much a star.
Her and the guy appear to be on Oxytocin her eye's are sinking so far back and the guy appears to nod off a bit.
How could I purchase Empty Bottle String Band music
Sounds like someone was trying to turn a stapler into a musical instrument.
The sound is the dreaded taps plague that contaminates old time music venues of SW-Virginia such as The Carter Fold. The flat foot dancing (many with the dreaded taps) is actually a big audience draw but to me the taps really spoil the ability to enjoy the music. I don't frequent the nearby Carter Fold for that reason.
I think the gentleman with the loud taps in this video had something like staplers loosely attached to the bottom of his footwear.
the moon shines bright on Charlie Chaplin
his boots are crackin
for want of blacking
and his awd fusty coat wants a mendin
before they send him
to the dardanelles!
Schumann, circa 1848, still delighting those who play and hear it!
