Thank you Sandy. Because of your excellent and often humorous tutorials, I have started card-making with watercolours. This video is superb with load of needed detail on brush types , shapes, former dry and wet and why it matters. Thank you so much.
On the Ranger water brushes, the little black valve can be removed...just stick your fingernail between it and the water chamber, and it pops right out. Then, you can put the chamber under the faucet, or whatever. BUT, I find the easiest way to fill it is to use one of those little plastic pipettes to fill it with distilled water. Pour it from jug into a small cup, fill it with the pipette. Works like a charm. Hope that helps, Sandy! I have several brands of waterbrushes, and the ones where you don't have to remove the valve are the easiest to refill! Best wishes!
Liner brushes are intended for vines, lines and writing. I'm new to watercolor painting, but I've done acrylic painting for many years. you're doing great...keep up the good work!
I am such a beginner in watercolor, but have a little experience with acrylics from my days as a decorative painter.....Watercolor has fascinated for years. So here I am enjoying videos and trying to work on my skills. I have watched a lot of videos in the last few months, and must say yours are tops. There's a lot to learn, and one thing I am enjoying, and appreciate is all the work you have done experimenting. Thanks so much.....I am subscribed. Will be watching for each new video.
Sandy, thank you so much. The information on brushes and how to use the watercolor brushes has been so enlightening. I was handling the brush all wrong and was so frustrated that I couldn't get the results I'd envisioned when I started my projects. I can't wait to get busy now. Thanks again.
Also, licking the brush is not new to me. So you are not alone. It seems to allow the brush to dry in the shape, that it should be in, and dries properly. Again, thank you so much! I have learned so much from you and I appreciate that so very much!!
Sandy, love your videos. But thought you should know that the plastic sleeve on the brushes is for protection during shipping. You will undoubtedly damage your brushes if you attempt to put it back on after the sizing has been removed. Look carefully at the ones that you have done this on and you will probably find that you have some with "bent" hairs. It is really hard to put that sleeve back on without the sizing and not get these. To really treat your brushes well, throw those sleeves away!
I use the sleeves without issue but then I put the brush in slightly dampened on the outside by dipping fingers in water and wiping around them and let it dry out before putting them in storage.
If you having a hard time getting the travel brush back into it's cap, you can try putting the tip of the brush, at an angle into the opening as best you can, and then gently rotate the brush to get the stray hairs into the cap. "Cracking" the gum arabic in new brushes like that risks loosening the hairs, making it more likely that some fall out later on, and risks ruining the brush's point. As for licking the brushes, it is not ruining the brush that could be a problem, it is consuming the pigments.
Thank you for saving me quite a bit of money on brushes! I have tried a few different brands, including water brushes. I felt that it was probably me and my technique. I feel like I've been given a reprieve. Amazingly helpful tutorial ! Thank you so much!!
Thank you, Sandy! I am just getting started and have purchased some brushes and really appreciated what you shared...the good and bad! This was so helpful! Thank you!
I just purchased three of the Silver brushes and was actually amazed at their performance. I have always bought sable when purchasing expensive brushes ...thinking they were the best. I am still practicing with them as they hold so much more water and the points are so sharp. Thanks so much for your review! I will be subscribing!
Best to hold water brushes like the Tim Holtz brand under a running tap of water and squeeze just a few times and they fill right up. Thanks for this, I wanna check out those black velvet brushes now!
I was told to pull out the black plug to fill the water rushes. I have done this for years with absolutely no problem. Give it a try because it is not frustrating, as trying to fill them by pulling water up through a jar. Life is much too short! I have thoroughly enjoyed all your videos to date. Watching Penny paint was especially nice for me, as I am the neighbor, who takes time to teach the kids around me how to play with my art supplies and stamps. Please keep making videos, for you have a fan here!
+cheryl7476 i was going to comment the same thing. i have several of the tim holtz water brushes that i remove the black plug and fill with colored ink :)
Thanks for solving the mystery of the stiff pointy brush, to be honest I was never sure if I should remove the adhesive myself or let it come off over time, lol. A tip for your Ranger water brushes, it's actually easier to fill them by squeezing the barrel, then holding them under running water rather than fighting gravity by filling them from a cup. I really liked this video, thanks a lot! I'll be subscribing😊
@Mardi Weber That's why I listed several kinds - hope something will work for you :) With water brushes I just leave it, usually those brush nibs are some kind of plastic something or other, so I think they're fine with the water.
I am really getting so much out of these videos. I know it was a lot of work but it was worth it. Really helpful information. Thank you so much for taking the time to do this. As a side note, your cards are always amazing. Such talent!!!!!
With Watercolor Brush Pens I wasn't sure if I'd like them at all but got a cheap set to do cards and postcards with (Trasfit Assorted Water Coloring Brush Pen, Set of 6) to be exact, but have never had the issues with them you did. For one I never realized you are supposed to fill them the way you did (no instructions) and so was taking my thumbnail and pulling the black plastic part out, then using a long plastic transfer pipette to fill them! Since I used them with pan watercolors or watercolor pencils, I use them like any other brush and have never squeezed the reservoir handle while picking up pigment. Instead, I squeeze the handle prior to wet the brush only and find them nice for travel but not for much outside craft work or small projects.
The liner (or rigger brush) is very good for looooong lines, since it holds an enormous amount of water/color. It is used often for stalks, branches, twigs. The lack of control prevents your twigs and such from looking too controlled and less random :) It is a fun brush :) Don't put your plastic thingies back on your brushes. The hairs might get distorted, and might also break off of your ferrule :)
You can take the black part out of the aquabrush & fill normally. I never read the instructions so I didn’t know you were supposed to suck water into it....lol
I have seen the wraps for brushes and wondered if they would damage brushes? You find that it is safe for your brushes to use one, I like how they are stored so neatly.
I recently got back into watercolors and I definitely need to restock on brushes, especially chinese type ones. My flat and fan brushes are fine. Also I got my set of Zig Water brushes. Thanks for a few good tips ^^
My favorite paint brush is my 2 ZEN Royal & Langnickle brush. The bristles are so soft and smooth yet still stiff enough where they don't fray.. Unlike some of the Craftsmart brushes that I have and almost never use. I bought a set with brushes for different kinds of paints and I regret it.. Some of the brushes in it are ok but not as good at the ZEN. If I would have gotten that first I would have never bought that Craftsmart set.. Lesson learned. lol
Thank you for such a helpful video. I am reasonably familiar with the differences between papers, paints and inks etc, but brushes confound me. It's difficult to know whether the heavier investment brushes are really worth the money. This has helped a lot. Thanks for sharing.
thank you for this review, especially the bit about the hardness of new brushes. I was at the art store prepared (or so I thought) to buy a brush and saw they were like that so I decided to come home and research. I suppose I could've asked an employee, but I am always skeptical and think they're just going to say whatever gets it sold, you know? thanks again!
I've been wanting a few of the black velvet brushs for awhile now....after watching this video I gave in and ordered 4 of them but now the hardest part is waiting :)
+Sandy Allnock well I got my brushes they hold so much pigment it's fabulous! but darn it now I have to order a #8 and a #12 round lol have a great week Sandy
My pentel water brushes seem to always be wet when there is water in the container..so I don't think I have to squeeze it out like what others do:/ and at first I thought it was broken but whenever I search for stores that sell it the description always has "the brush that's always wet" lol...But great video! Going to try the Silver Black Velvet line!
Thank you for another very informative video. I was hoping that the Silver Brush Black Velvet would be synthetic. I'm sad that it's not because I try to buy only non-animal products. You did list synthetic brushes though, thank you, I'll check them out. When you are done with your water brushes do you leave the remaining water in the chamber or squeeze/dump it out? I've never been sure if it's ok to leave it sit. Thanks again. Now onto your last "Getting Started" video. :-)
Thank you, Sandy, this was very helpful!!! I just went back to re-watch it again because I want to purchase some of the Black Velvet watercolor brushes when I can, and I wanted to see which #s you recommended. I'm wondering how to take care of good brushes like these, I want to get the best out of my investment, and I really do not know how to do this. I will do some research, but I was wondering how you look after your brushes. I appreciate all I learn from you on your videos, thank you!!! You came and did some classes at Buffalo Stamps 'N Stuff, and I SO wanted to go and take a few of your classes, including coloring flowers (my all-time favorite is flowers), your Art Impressions watercolor class (I have a few of their watercolor stamps), and your bible journaling course--but due to physical constraints, I find it very challenging to get to classes, especially when one is about a 90-minute drive and over a border to get there (I live in Ontario), but man did I want to go!!! I'm sure that everyone who was able to go was blessed by all they learned from you and I am sure it was an enjoyable time for all!!! :) Perhaps another time... I hope you will come back there, it's a wonderful store run by a lovely lady and super employees... :) Sorry this is so long... Best wishes, Joanne
for the 'turkey baster' ones (lol 😂) just squeeze tight first and don't release until you have it in the water. probably figured that out by now tho lol
I have about 5 different brands of the water brushes and I prefer the Zig over the rest of them. I also fill mine under a thin stream of running water. Squeeze the air out, suck the water in.
Hello Sandy from Mexico, my daughter is starting into watercoloring, she is asking me to asking you, what should she have to study to be an artist like you? she is fourteen and start to think about college and what she wants to study, so know she is sooo interested in watercoloring. I have a Kuretake ZIG Waterbrush and its soo much cheaper than the Pentel ones and works the same. The brush hairs are perfect, however mine are a little fuzzy because I was very abusive with it lol. I was rubbing the paper too much (that was a cheap canson 200gsm paper) and little paper boogers got stuck in the brush. So I just pulled them out with my fingernails and that kinda damaged the brush. Still does the job though :D
mam . what kind of paper or name of the paper that is yellowish white? .i'am usually see that in some watercolor jornal here on you tube. thank you. sorry for my english mam.😊
Well, I'm impulsive and an idiot! I ran out to buy WC brushes at Michael's. As I didn't have a lot of dough had to go cheap and cheap I am. So picked up a set of 12 brushes to quickly paint a pic. Uhm, I'm not sure if you have to prime a brush before use? I do know about sizing from some tole painting. So, as I'm "painting," I notice a lot of hairs on my paper. You can try them, but a watercolor brush that holds a good amount of pigment and water will make you more successful; acrylic brushes aren't made to hold much.
The dollar store aqua brush looks like the large royal langnickel. i have all 3 sizes and had exactly the same problem, do not recommend them, their actual brushes seem okay tho
i have been using water colure for 65 years and its still my favorite medium
It never gets old 😍😍😍

For Mardi - take a look at the Princeton Neptune line of brushes. They are synthetic "squirrel" - hold a ton of water and feel elegant and responsive.
Thank you Sandy. I was in a dilemma about brushes. Now I know. Thank you so much.
Thanks for solving the mystery of the stiff pointy brush, to be honest I was never sure if I should remove the adhesive myself or let it come off over time, lol. I do agree that travel brushes are costlier than normal brushes, since you're also paying for portable convenience.
@Mardi Weber That's why I listed several kinds - hope something will work for you :)

Do you have any pointers on a good diversified set for a beginner's small budget?

well Sandy ..... I now have 7 of the black velvet brushs ! and I blame you 😉... have a great week sweetie

With Silver brand for me the hardest part is paying! hehe
Ive never squeezed my water/aqua brushes i find that it comes out enough on its own :S guess ive been doing it differently

Sarah it's suppose to be that people squeeze it so they can get a lighter colour
I love the Silver brushes
I wonder about the stiff thing. Thanks!!

+Joanne Lowe important to dry them horizontally.
TFS, great video although I really wanted to know which water brush failed!!! LOL
for the 'turkey baster' ones (lol 😂) just squeeze tight first and don't release until you have it in the water. probably figured that out by now tho lol
+Hope Wiley yep 😉
Thanks for sharing all this info!
Hi! I have the zig and I put it under running water and squeeze and it fills up quickly like that :)
I have about 5 different brands of the water brushes and I prefer the Zig over the rest of them. I also fill mine under a thin stream of running water. Squeeze the air out, suck the water in.

Just tell her to try everything. All mediums, all styles---she'll eventually figure out what she wants to do long term.
Love this one, Sandy! I need to go invest some $$$ on a few good brushes! Thank you!
Paper boogers... Love it ! :D
Hi! lovely video..you explain very clearly the feature of the brushes :) what do you think about the cotman brushes?
+Bea Swan Cotman is a student line---I haven't used them though, so I don't really know.
On the tim holtz water brushes pull the little black plug out fill and put it back in ;~) ,
Sandy, do you think that watercolor brush with number 0 or below (like Cotman) are useful to paint a landscape painting?
+Hayashi Ryuuen they're tiny but if you paint tiny landscapes they are great.
Hello! I am new to watercolors. I would just like to know if water brushes or paint brushes (regular) is more preferable for the beginners?
+Jaz Bee I'm not a huge fan of aqua brushes in general; I think regular brushes are easier to use. 😍
+Sandy Allnock Thank you btw!
mam . what kind of paper or name of the paper that is yellowish white? .i'am usually see that in some watercolor jornal here on you tube. thank you. sorry for my english mam.😊
This probably isn't a good thing, right? The brand is Artist's Loft ... I'm really embarrassed to admit, I guess? Well, I'm stuck either way. Guess I'll paint till only the ferrule is left? LOL sorta?? Thanks for your help!!
I did the same thing....ended up giving the brushes to a 5 year old :)
+Christina Furner-Webber I have some ok brushes that I bought years ago while living in Germany, but I just started getting artist grade brushes and I just use Michaels 40% & 50% coupons when they have them. This way I have bought brushes that I would not be able to purchase at full price. You can also take a family member (I took my 2 sons [they're adults]), a friend or a few and they can make the purchase and you can use the same coupon and get a few brushes that are better quality for less. Same goes for Hobby Lobby, AC Moore and JoAnn.
By the way if you go with someone to make the purchase for you, they only have to be there with the brush (or item) in hand you swipe your own card; they don't have to pay for it unless you have cash, then you can give them the cash to make the purchase.
Huh, looks like a good amount of brushes in the thumbnai-OH MY GOD THE DESCRIPTION AHHHHHHHHH
very helpful! Thanks!!
Very informative! Thank you
Thank you sooo much!!
I love Dick Blick! Have two stores here in Atlanta!
have you done an update on watercolor brushes, since you have been working with them a while now? I would really like some info on good brushes. Thanks
+Amena B. Silver brushes, black velvet line---I use mostly 8 and 12 lately ❤
Thanks for the info!!
Is there a video of how to clean brushes?I'm counting on you senpai
+Frickin' Mickey just rinse in water and dry flat. That'd be a boring video...LOL! :)
I just need 1 Big Sable Mop Brush.......I use mine for acrylic too..except sables...
The black velvet brushes are so expensive here in the philipines :))))
for the water brush you dont need to always press the water compartiment it should flow continuely as you move the brush on your paper
Should but doesn't always.
Where. In Seattle
Tones of hair coming out of my Davinci Series 803 Catail #12.. Losing it quicker than my cat .. Help !!!!! what to do .. ??
+J J Kanuck oh gosh so sorry :( I save those brushes for using with other things like masking fluid since they're toast anyway! :( Make sure you're letting brushes dry flat and not leaving them in the water container, too.
OMG WHY ARE THESE COMMENTS SO LONG????? BY the Way, I subscribed Sandy Allnock
+Kiran George 😉
I live in Washington too!
Everyone is an artist, silly, no need for formal training to get the title. If you keep those plastic things on your brushes, you run the risk of bending back and pulling hairs out of the ferrule. You should avoid licking your brushes because the chemicals in some kinds of inks or paints are toxic and may cause unpleasant side effects...
I love Dick Blick here in Atlanta!!!
black velvet brush are so cheap compared to Winsor and Newton series 7 £35 as opposed to £230. For size 15.
I already have many acrylic brushes can I use them for watercolor painting so I do not to invest Miele money on watercolor brushes
You can try them, but a watercolor brush that holds a good amount of pigment and water will make you more successful; acrylic brushes aren't made to hold much.
Do you have the stippling brush??????
+Kiran George no, I don't use one...
Its a kind of brush that you use to "stipple" on trees.
The dollar store aqua brush looks like the large royal langnickel. i have all 3 sizes and had exactly the same problem, do not recommend them, their actual brushes seem okay tho
That's likely the one, ugh! 😊
Uhhhh....Sandy you better check your "Online Class" links.....they definitely do not take you to the right place!😮
It’s fixed now
Urghhhh i was in a rush so instead of getting something good i got this crappy set of 12 brushes that shed whenever i use it.
What set were they?
I know you love your fabric brush wrap, but I actually cringed to watch decent quality unprotected brushes getting all wrapped up together in it.
The wrap really does keep them nice. :)
