Thank you for the tip, I will try undoing the half shaft from the gearbox and hopefully I can complete the task. I have just spent too long trying to take the hub off the drive shaft on my mate's A2 (and alot of swearing at the car, I must say I prefer working on old British and Japanese cars.) All I want to do is replace the front shocks and the bottom ball joint including the bottom bracket.
The abs ring goes on at the same time as the bearing and is pressed/levered home with a screwdriver once the bearing is in place. It's held in place with a bit of araldite.
Hammering the bearing in damages the balls and the cage. Then you can do the job again after a couple of months. Do it properly and get the right tools for the job.

Suppose it's just perseverance but never easy working on old cars, especially on your drive. Good luck
the cv joint is glued in the hub. You must it heating
How do you insert a safety ring without breaking it?

Where did you get the parts? I have a feeling mine is on the way out... Strangely almost identical car to mine - same rims, same paint colour!
