UPDATE: The pickups are single coils and NOT humbuckers! Lowend Lobster discovered that Gretsch had een faulty advertising this. Learn more here: th-cam.com/video/Q0xOrEwSk9s/w-d-xo.html

Thanks for this update. I see Gretsch has also just updated its website to say they're single coil pick-ups, when it used to say humbucker.
A lot of guitar store websites haven't caught up yet, though, and still have the old wording that Gretsch supplied them with.

I was at the guitar store today and overheard a family looking for a short scale bass for their daughter who was just starting out. Unfortunately the only person available to help them didn't know much about Basses so thought I'd share what little knowledge I had on short scale Basses. They ended up settling on this model in black. It's nice to know she picked a good one for her first bass :)

I've played many basses over the years and hands down this one has been my favorite. I'm not knocking the other "makes & models" out there by any means. Favorites all boil down to one's own ears and sense of playability. That said, this one hit all my marks. Extremely versatile...Great Tones...& Extremely Comfortable! Pair it with a Fender Rumble amp & it's a beautiful beast when it sings.

    • @convertkendo5224

@@simonbirtles8981I’d say mate if you got a squire mustang that’s near enough without going the fender route. As for gretsch. As it is it’s great , pick ups are wooomf . Front pick up is like a caricature of fender precision . It’s a versatile bass and with tweaks even more so. I can go from said fender , to music man to alembic.
      Just sayin.

Fun story about when I picked this exact bass up. I went to my local guitar shop, just hoping to look around and just get some strings. An employee walked up to me and asked what kind of guitar I was looking for. Ofc I respond I play bass and he asked again what I was looking for. I thought quickly of something they probably don’t have so I went “O Body short scale with a sunburst pattern.” He looked me dead in the eyes and went “we have exactly that”
$300 and 4 years later I can confidently say it’s been my best bass purchase

Doesnt the term JET come from other Gretsch guitars and btw, Lobster guy discovered that the pickups are not Real Humbuckers, so false add from Fender-Gretsch but everyone like the sound, regardless

It reminds me of the weird scooped clangy sound that reminds me of 70s garage rock, gospel, self released disco. It evokes all that is dirttty in music. Super versatile. Especially for a two bass band or where the bass is the lead. And it comes in pink. I am in love. God bless.

Bought one over the weekend. 1st bass. Tried to buy a used Fender but the guy at GC said this was the
one to go with. (And for about $150 less). I have 8 other guitars at home that have frustrated the hell out of me but this is a new ballgame. It’s solved many of the issues that were holding me back on the others. Also, “taking lessons” online with the bass teachers has taught me more about the instrument and music than all the others had. I’m now using what I’m learning on bass and applying it to the bottom 4 on the sixes and middle 4 on the baritone. Really happy with the whole experience.

I was fortunate enough to find one of these at my local shop in the super cool and somewhat rare Torino green finish, and you better believe I snatched it up immediately. I’d played one at the big box music store and had considered buying from a major online retailer; to find a green one locally made my day.
Anyway, this is my first bass, and I’m in love! The short scale makes it much easier for me (and my kids who are learning a bit) especially coming from guitar, mandolin, banjo…
    I picked up a Rumble 40. Got a RC-5 looper. Dude, I’m in at-home music heaven.
I will say, my fretwork isn’t very impressive at all. Playable for sure, but pretty jagged compared to my other (mostly higher end) instruments. I’m planning to mellow them out with a fret file whenever I change the strings, give them a more broken in feel.
Still, as is, this is a great instrument! Plenty versatile for me. Easy to play. Very happy. And I appreciate your review, which did help push me in the direction of the Gretsch. Thanks.

for me the difference in playing a standard size and a short scale are that short scales are fantastic for fast, high energy music like what i play now. but full lengths are good for driving, slower-medium speed music. thats obviously preference and not like a standard or anything. but i pretty much only play my short scales. i play punk so its really nice for that jumping around, high energy music. the only hinderance is you lose a couple notes on the upper end. but we are bass players, if you playing above the 12th fret for more than 3 measures your either playing jazz or your actually a guitar player.

LaBella flats are great, too. That’s what I’m running. I recently tried some rounds again (Rotosound and D’Adarrio, both) and have to say, nothing fits like the flats in terms of both sound and feel. The flats are a bit stiffer, which helps a lot to sort of make up for the slack tension of the shorter scale. (Roto 66s 40-90 were WAY too slinky!)

I know you mentioned that you enjoy playing this fingerstyle, but actually for me, this bass feels really good to play picked. Where my arm naturally lays is really towards the back of the bass, due to the short scale of course, and that's where I usually really like to pick. It felt a little uncomfortable for me to play fingerstyle, but I'm sure that's because I'm just used to playing with my thumb either on or near the neck pickups of standard Fender Jazz/P basses. In any case, I think the strength of this bass is that it's really unique and great for someone who wants to try something different. However, it's weakness to me is versatility: there are only a few tones that work for me, but the tones that do work, I really loved (like you mentioned the mixed pickups sound solid overall). Thanks again for a nice video.

      @erstwhilerambler 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Yeah, it’s a little limited in terms of tonal variation. I’m still new to bass, so the sounds it gives me (especially paired with the Fender Rumble 40, which has those three switches for bright, contour, and vintage) are sufficient, but I’m sure it would be a specialized usage instrument for someone used to having active controls, a PJ combination, and what not. It isn’t going to be the one bass you grab for studio work; it’s too one-dimensional. But for laying down some fat rock, blues, or “vintage” bass lines, it does the job. And, yes, it’s fun to play!

    • @erstwhilerambler
      @erstwhilerambler ปีที่แล้ว

Back again because I like to remind myself how cool this bass is whenever I start GASing. I still love this thing, and I’m finding it plenty versatile for live playing - since so much of the nuance is lost among the other instruments in the band. It holds the low end perfectly.

I was in a pawnshop near Port Arthur today as they were bringing one out. I played it for three quarters of an hour through a couple of amps, then bought it for 220 dollars. I've played a variety of Fenders and Rics since the '70's, but arthritis has forced me to a shorter scale. I'm retiring my Jazz. This is a great little bass.

Played 7 different short scale basses back to back and brought this Gretsch in tobacco sunburst home today. Of them all, she was clearly the best sounding with huge and punchy pickups with a giant range of tones from bright to dark. My only complaint is that there were a couple minor setup issues. Had a bit too much bow in the neck and needed a slight truss rod adjustment. Also had to file the low E slot at the nut, but nothing difficult to mend if you’re mildly savvy. Long story short, she sounds like a $1000+, but the initial setup is definitely a $300 bass. Breakout some tools and you’ll be delighted.

Just bought one of these in Imperial Stain as a second bass.
Compared to my exquisite diminutive Ibanez MikroBass this feels like a huge monster. :)
Build quality seems flawless to me and it oozes character.
Slapped a set of La Bella 760F-S flatwounds on it, awesome punchy and on the front pick-up retro tone, somewhat reminiscent of a 50's single coil Precision.
Completely different to the warm, round mellow tones of the MikroBass with La Bella 760FS-S flats on it.
Only real drawback to me is that Gretsch is a hell of a neck diver.
I might put some lightweight tuners on it in the future...

Hey, Johnny. Have you run in to any noise issues from this bass? I got one about three weeks ago and pretty much love it, but when I turn it up to play with a drummer, there's a *lot* of what sounds like single-coil hum. It's exactly the same in all three positions, and louder than the hum I get when soloing a j-style pickup on another bass. This has happened with two different amps in two different locations. I had a tech at the store where I bought it check the wiring, and everything looks good. I'm wondering if mine actually has singles under the covers.

@@JonnyDibble Thanks! I never liked my previous bass (Yamaha RBX170), because it was not so good looking like this Gretsch and had such boring sound. I hope this bass changes my life :)

I have black one. Really unique bass, but for me it is suitable only for playing with a pick. If you want to check how does it sound in a mix, check songs by ZFeelZ - Disappear and Shame (but the bass is distorted there)

Awesome! Yeah I say it fits mostly playing with a pick, then finger style and suits slap the least

@@JonnyDibble Yeah, I don’t really play slap style, and this being my only bass contributes somewhat to that fact. When I tried some long-scale basses, I could get a decent slapped tone right away; with this one, not so easy (for me at least). But pick and fingers both do really well.
