    As someone who works in the medical field I was crawling out of my skin watching this video. You should absolutely have been put on a Holter monitor. Especially if you still feel the flutter and the Apple Watch is still picking them up. They would easily capture the arrhythmia and then could go from there. I don’t understand how they can dismiss it without knowing what it is. Best of luck to you! I hope you can find a cardiologist that is willing to get to the bottom of it.
    Long story but the short of it is I had a stroke at 27 with no prior knowledge of any cardiac problem. It was found during the work up that I had a PFO (hole in my heart) that was only open when I would bear down. It’s since been closed, I have no restrictions, and am now almost 42.
    It’s probably fine isn’t a good enough answer.

      A 24 hour holter monitor or even a 30 day cardiac event recorder are likely to be inconclusive and tend to be expensive for unreliable results. Dixie, I sent you an email that may peak your interest. It will show up as Fred Pierce. I look forward to speaking with you.😊

    • @TrailMinded
      @TrailMinded 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      @@funandfam2154 why do you think it would be inconclusive when she can reproduce the flutters at home?
      A coworker of mine just wore a monitor for two weeks for a similar feeling of flutters. She learned that she was having even more episodes than she realized. Now that it’s been captured she’s having more tests done.

    • @funandfam2154
      @funandfam2154 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@TrailMinded no doubt that she is producing flutters and despite some doctors saying you can’t feel them, you absolutely can. I am definitely not questioning her ability to reproduce symptoms. That’s actually good. Jessica and I share an almost identical story, from the doctors making you feel like you’ve kind of been blown off, to inconclusive tests, or being told it’s nothing serious. It took me 20 years to solve my issue, and before wasting a ton of money of 2 or 3 lead ECG tests, there are alternatives that will stop this in its tracks.

    Trust your body and keep pushing for answers. I had to push due to an artery blockage that everyone said I didn't have. All testing (EKG, Stress Test, Calcium X-Ray....) were all inconclusive. Finally got them to agree to do an Angiogram and guess what, I had a 95% Blockage in my main artery. Had a Stent put in and am fully recovered for 12 years, but it demonstrated to me that you have to be your own advocate relative to your health.
    Hope you finally find someone that will take your issues seriously and you can get a diagnosis so you can get the issue resolved.

    Sounds like a familiar story. I was backpacking alone last July when I sensed something was up with me healthwise. I was referred to a cardiologist who scheduled me for a stress test. When I showed up for it, I was told there was a mistake and the equipment used for it was already in use and I would have to reschedule. This was after burning a vacation day from work for this test. That was September 16. Long story short, on Sunday night, September 24, 2023, I had a heart attack. Within 24 hours I had a stent to open a 99% blocked artery. I tried to address the issue and do preventative maintenance the right way but our local health care system is so incompetent that it took a near death experience to get the problem fixed. This nation’s health care system is in a pitiful state. No one wants to be accountable for a diagnosis.

    • @oldschooljeremy8124
      @oldschooljeremy8124 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

      The equipment seems to be a chronic problem, or maybe excuse. I too was scheduled for a stress test and then they called the day before my appointment with "Our treadmill just broke down, we don't know when it will be fixed, we have to reschedule and we'll call to let you know". Naturally, weeks go by, no call. I had to call them to get it done ( and then it was "Oh we were just about to call you" ). THEN they wanted me to have a CT scan. Same deal, appointment scheduled and the day before they call to say "We don't do that test at this location, we have to reschedule you for next week at another office" halfway across the city. Apparently for 3 weeks they didn't know that they didn't do this test at this location and only twigged to it the day before. Had the test and haven't heard a word from the cardiologist since...and every time I call his office it's "Our computer system is down we can't do anything we'll call you tomorrow". Which, of course, they don't, ever.

    I had afib, my heart was stuck at 160 bpm at rest. I went into surgery at 10 am and walked out cured and feeling 100% at 3 pm. The procedure took only 15 minutes, they entered through my groin, and fed the device up to my heart, where it burnt a ring around one of the chambers - it was very uncomfortable even with morphine. That was five years ago and I've felt great ever since.

    Glad to see you're getting up and about again! ER doc here, unfortunately most Apple/Garmin watch/Kardia Mobile tracings are very prone to movement artifact and not of the quality needed to confidently diagnose specific arrhythmias, you really need a proper ambulatory cardiac monitor. In the old days, this was a Holter monitor which is rather unwieldy, but my facility uses a much smaller one called the Zio XT. This is a small device that you stick to your chest and wear 24/7, typically for about 2 weeks or so, then mail in for download and interpretation. It has a button that you can push if you are experiencing your symptoms, it then marks it on the recording. This is especially useful if you have an activity routine that will reliably provoke the sensation, but is not easy to perform while in the office. You might talk your primary care doc and see if they can order one for you, we put them on the in ER fairly frequently for outpatient arrhythmia workups. Hope this helps!

      In Italy I was subjected to a similar procedure. In two months I had ECG, Holter monitoring, blood exams before and after. Different doctors cooperated to solve the problem and it worked…all for little more than a 100€. Furthermore, cancelling an appointment is seriously unprofessional (expecially for holidays), you do not accept it in the beginning. Here in Italy we have lots of problems with the public healthcare, but it seems our system works quicker and better than yours sometimes. Hope it’s a one off case as you seem to offer the solution.

    Not sure if anyone suggested it but you’d be a perfect candidate for a ZIO monitor. You wear it over your heart for 2 weeks. Anytime you notice the fluttering you push the button on the monitor and record it in a diary what you were doing at the time. Works well to detect paroxysmal A-fib.

A highly rated doctor literally told me he'd be right back in the middle of our appointment and then never came back, just sent his nurse in. I couldn't believe it. The differential diagnosis on my MRI and CT included possible metastatic cancer, and this guy never even told me anything or let me ask questions OR schedule me for a liver biopsy. Told me to get another MRI even though I told him I have crippling panic disorder that makes MRI impossible without medicine. I cancelled the colonoscopy he had recommended and couldn't get through the MRI. Companies got too much money in the game. Whether you wanted to go an open market route like the Republicans or socialize it like the Democrats you could've done it by now, and either way would've probably lowered costs. But the big almighty $ is paying politicians campaigns. "Citizens" United was the worst thing to happen to American politics and we should've stood up and told them no right then and there

      Not to mention the fact that if our auto or home insurance worked like healthcare it would 3x in cost when you had to file a claim just to fix a light bulb (the healthcare equivalent of the administrative burden on simple/routine/low cost visits or procedures)

    Sounds like an episode of Atrial Flutter... I showed 100% healthy on the treadmill stress test, only to be flying my airplane with my father-in-law on board for his 1st flight 8 weeks later, and experienced Atrial Flutter for the 1st time. It took everything in me to keep focused on flying the aircraft, get the airplane back to the airport, and get us safely on the ground. My heart rate had gone up to 265 bpm and stayed there for days... They tried zapping the heart (cardiovert) and when that failed, did 2 Ablations where they burn a tiny section of the heart where your signals are short-circuiting. The 2nd one worked great! Had a "Watchman" device installed in my left ventricle last year, and I'm 100% good and back in the saddle! I hope you're 100% soon!!

She has had no issues since. If you start to experience flu/cold symptoms that cold/flu remedies do nothing for. Then go to the hospital. My dad, and my aunt both nearly died from thyroid shut down. Both had fib issues for months before the thyroid finally shut down. It can be tested for with simple blood test.

      As another said, the likelihood of someone with a similar claim, but without Dixie's audience, having their accident paid would drop tremendously.
      I do not have this coverage from Garmin (and I'm not sure I ever will), but others who do have it claim that the policy is only for accidents, like an animal attack, tripping and breaking your leg, a lightning strike, a tree falling on you ... but not due to illnesses.
      If that is true, and I see no reason to doubt these claims, then you can bet six figures that the size of Dixie's channel, and the people emailing Garmin about whether it would be paid, was a huge factor in their decision to pay.
      None of that should be taken as ill will towards her -- I'm happy at the result and I hope others with similar claims will also get the coverage.
      What's more likely unfortunately, is that Garmin will either raise rates in anticipation of more claims like this being paid, and/or their policy will be *extremely revised* to specifically prevent cases like this from being paid again.

      Ya sounds to me like jab issues, I know she said several times she never got it so good for her - That said I know of many people that lied or refused to admit to anyone they got V'd for whatever reason you can imagine - They eventually came clean about it after several heart issues

    Wishing you the best, Dixie. I'm sure there are many others like me, but I doubt you'll ever know the the true extent of the impact for good you've made on other peoples' lives. Thank you.

    Heck Yeah! glad your getting back out there!!! I don't think I will be buying a GPS after your experience though... I rather just died in the wilderness than have to spend money I don't have...

    The Kardia app and device is very good. My faighter used one to successfully capture runs of very rapid heart rate. I had Wolff Parkinson White Syndrome and used a device about the size of a small paperback book to capture SVT. I subsequently had 12-lead EKGs at 280-290 bpm. Eventually I was successfully treated with one of the first rounds of radio frequency ablation at Duke University and have been asymptomatic since the 1990s.
    I completely understand the feeling of being blown off. I was told for years that it was just hormones as this was during puberty. All of that until my mom saw it happen one time. Heart rates over 200 beats per minute are hard to even count by hand.
    If you are having this much trouble, there are several Electrophysiology docs in Atlanta and of course Duke has a great EP department. Stay strong and keep advocating for yourself.

    Since this happens to me... you may wish to pay attention to solar weather. My heart space gets incoming energy that I can feel. It pulses on its own distinct rhythm that is slower and not tied to my heartbeat. Lasts for a few hours. Taking electrolytes, staying hydrated, and grounding barefoot helps me. Typically within 12 to 48 hours afterwards there are solar flares, and sometimes spikes in the Schumann Resonance. Not saying this is happening to you, but I figured you might want additional things to consider if you are really at your wits end.

    I had to have an ICD fitted at 30 for VT after a Loaded March, ended my career in the military. Had to have open heart surgery last year to fix a leaking valve at 38. Luckily we have the NHS so don't have worry about policies for health care etc. (Been walking in the Lake District this week!) Hope you are well and can carry on as you want.

    We walked the West Highland Way in 2021. Great walk with a mix of wild camps and accommodation. One thing, the first half along Loch Lomond is not that pleasant and Camping Management Areas are in force with fines for camping in a non-designated area or without a pre-booked ticket. Enforcement is rare but something to consider. Try the TGO Challenge in May next year. This is a 2-week unsupported backpacking challenge, coast to coast across the highlands of Scotland with over 350 participants from all over the world taking part every year. Join the family - this will be my 5th crossing.

    Cool West Highland way. it has a bit of everything. ( Tip > Stay in Glasgow near the Kelvin Grove Park (example Clyde Hostel) and start your walk from there following the River Kelvin. you walk to the official start point (it has a really nice vibe to it and will be one of your best days on the trail) Then walk past the start point at Milngavie about 3 miles in you will see Craigallian Loch on the right side keep on walking until you are under the electric wires and then go 90 degrees to the right towards the Loch 2 small ditches and a bit of bog for about 120 Meters and you will have a grand Camp spot directly under the power lines that is rarely used by WHW hikers ) total day will be about 16 miles ( it will be the only day you need the map ) - Option to do the East highland Way after or Ben Nevis - If you wane know more just give a shout

    I'm on my third Apple Watch. I have afib. The sensor in the watch stops working well after two years, hence the reason I'm on my third watch (all three stopped recording good ecg's after 2 years). I got a Kardia mobile last year, and I like it. It should not have the problem of only being reliable for two years. Granted, you gotta pull it out of your wallet/pocket to use it, but that's a small deal. FYI, if I overdo myself, in a hike or otherwise, rest always brings me back into rhythm. Not sure how altitude will affect me though. Will find out later this year. Also, if you are not taking a magnesium supplement, make sure you are getting enough thru your diet. Magnesium taurate is the best, which most of us affibers take.

    Life flight and air rescue insurance networks are around $60 - $80 per year paid directly to the source. I like backpacking and camping in the more remote areas and feel like it’s worth it.

    $60k for a helicopter rescue, wow! Me and my brother used our Garmins on Mt Whitney last year to have someone flown out, a hiker that needed rescue. In California, at least for r CA residents, charges are not usually forwarded to the person rescued unless negligence was involved. I guess there are other caveats as well. This is only what I've read though, I'm no expert. i don't know if the person we rescued was charged. Good thing you had the insurance and glad you are getting back on the trail! And thanks for the videos regarding this.

    If you can adjust your eclipse destination, it looks like cloud cover in Texas and Arkansas . Better conditions expected in Paducah and northeast. A meteorologist says New Hampshire offers the best odds of clear skies.

    My response to Garmin on the request to update the video after they paid the claim would have been: Thank you for contacting me about an update to one of my videos. To process your request, please fill out this claim form outlining what you what changed, why, and the basis for the change. The form can then be submitted to my claims department for processing which can take 4-6 month. Your patience is greatly appreciated!

    Happy to hear you will be hitting the trails again and look forward to seeing your trek of the West Highland Way. I have been wanting to get over there for years since I finished the JMT in 2017. After the JMT, I still had some knee problems, but my heart murmur had become a roar, so I need a new aortic valve first -- luckily I got a TAVR done (instead of open heart). Then Covid hit, so my knee surgery was postponed a few years. Now, I am almost 75 - wondering if I will be ever be getting out there again. In the meanwhile, I walk on my treadmill while watching hikers on the trail via TH-cam. I like the Catalyst and am curious about the newest version -- too bad you didn't get another pretty color this time. Hopefully, you will find a cardiologist that is willing to check it out and follow up over the years to see how things develop. Happy Trails.

    Sorry to hear about the frustrations with the doctors, I've been through the Afib thing myself and it gets scary. All I can say is if you think something is not right keep looking, you know your body better than anyone.
