What do you think is causing the fungus in the second tree, and do you think it will recover/survive, or is it something that eventually might kill it ?

Verticillium wilt is an unfortunate reality for maples. This tree will eventually die from it section by section. But it could still live for decades.
All we can do is make sure you know how to identify the signs to avoid diseased plants at the nursery and sterilize your tools/boots.
