  • Sometimes the sediment on the channel bed at low flow does not characterize the bed material or the channel geometry during an event. Dr. David Biedenharn from the US Army Corps of Engineers describes his method for exploring the thickness of cohesionless bed sediment in clay streams and implications of these thicknesses for geomorphic assessments and modeling.

    Very cool! This reminds me of how different periods of freezing/thawing (as well as many other processes) create distinct layers of snow and ice crystals over a snow slope - which can be responsible for avalanches.
