This should work very well with paladin or moon druid and both hobgoblin and kobold have abilities that like it when you occupy a larger space. (Kobold also is just funny. "Ah, cute" grows huge "oh help") Of course bugbear, aasimar or harengon are also good choices.
That is a great idea. I do plan to run back through any official material that gets released so as soon as I get my hands on the official wording then hopefully I'll be able to cover it. That will take priority over starting Ranger.

Yeah, I’m still pissed about the change to Hobgoblin. They could done this without losing the rich and flavorful theme.

I would at least pick up 1 more lvl of bard getting greater invisibility, dimension door and polymorph all of which should be very good on a paladin.
Totally fair. Bard is tough because once you get started, you don't wanna stop
