    Just for clarification...
If Japan actually build these ships, they are NOT going to be a "replacement" of the AEGIS Ashore System but a COMPLEMENT to it.

To be fair, the naming nomencalture is a bit strange worldwide. The same vessel can be designated as a cruiser, a frigate or a destroyer in different countries. The german K130 Corvette has a similar dispalcement as many WW II destroyers.

I wish Japan every success with these new vessels. Classically, Japan put far too many resources into Yamato and Musashi that could have been better spent on several lighter ships by that point in the conflict. I hope they are not making that same mistake again. Thank you for an interesting first look at these new ships.

Historically the Japanese wasted the potential of thouse ships because they held them in reserve and for defence, but these ships are intended to be used this way to defend the home islands under an umbrella so that shouldn't be a problem.

Japan built the Yamato and Musashi in WW2 because they knew they couldn’t outmatch the ship building capacity and resources that the U.S had at the time. So the Idea of the Yamato class of battleships was for it to be able to take on multiple U.S battleships at once without the need of an entire fleet of battleships of their own.

theoretically speaking, building a ship that supports railguns in active usage would need to be quite large in order to support nuclear power, the only reason this hasn't been done yet is because building a spiritual successor to the mighty battleship at peace time would be a major provocation towards all countries around the world and may destabilize foreign relations, it has nothing to do with whether or not these ships are difficult or expensive to build, just take america's supercarriers for example, they churn new carriers out every few years without any issue and it hardly makes a dent on their enormous military budget. having a battleship that can perform the role of a strategic bomber with an insanely long stand-off range is a huge advantage, and right now only the B52 Stratofortress (BUFF) and B2 Spirit can even remotely fulfill those roles.

I like the large hull, leave plenty of room for future developments, don't be cramp. this ship does not need tight turn ability to hunt submarines WWII style. The cost of the hull should be small, the biggest ticket is the BMDR system? The cost of SM-3 missiles is also high but that's a different budget.
My thought is Zumwalt was a victim of too many incompatible missions. A stealth hull with powerful area air defense can be sent by itself in the threat direction to seriously disrupt mass sortie.
NGFS should be an asset that you are not afraid to put in harm's way, this means something not too expensive, so skip the big radar. It should be possible to build something that can take a hit and still retire.
ASW does not require expensive hardware, but you want many of these. The submarine can still get in for a shot on the carrier, but if it will get surrounded by six ASW ships, he may not get away. This is enough to deter.

If I remember correctly, Japan cancels its plan, and build two 10,000 ton Aegis destroyers instead because two huge Aegis destroyers are too costly. In addition, maximum speed of two huge Aegis destroyers is not good enough to keep pace with other warships. Anyway, Japan is intended to have 10 Aegis destroyers by 2028 in order to cope with China`s military threat.

The difference is, that Japan with its aging population, will be unable to fight an offensive war. Unless of course Russia is weakened to such an extend by the Ukraine war and the coming fallout of that folly emboldens Japan to take back the Russian occupied islands that happen to sit on some large as yet underdeveloped oilfields. For that to become a reality however Japan would need more then two ships. Recently I came across an article that stated Japan is developing its own version of the F22., if true I would say Japan is back in a military sense. A combination of a strong Japanese airforce and an effective shield against nuclear missiles will effectively block Chinese ambitions. Also don’t forget that much of Japans military capability ( indeed the western world) depends on USA technology.

Japan is extremely good at taking the inventions of others and drastically improving them, now they're turning that potent talent to making weapons of war after many decades of being staunchly pacifist. I have a feeling the Chinese know this well enough to be nervous. Japan is a small nation that is able to compete quite well in business with anyone, now they bring this reverence to battlefield technology.

@@catonpillow Japan has a talent for drastically improving any technology they can get their hands on, the Chinese can do this to a limited extent but Japan has a real knack for it. Sometimes I think they love technology so much they might end up becoming the Borg. If Japan opts to use AI on the battlefield it'll be advanced enough to become independent itself which would make everyone nervous including the Japanese themselves. I hope to see AI becoming a bigger part of gaming but I think it's reckless to use it on the battlefield to the point where it's permitted to take human life, which is why I think Japan might become more dominant than many realise. They're obsessed with robots and see them as people, this I think is really dangerous when these robots end up advanced enough to be self aware....Japan has been pouring insane amounts of money into the development of AI and robotics, up until recently ut has been for commercial purposes but now all those years of development is being handed to their military.

There is actually nothing unusual about the size and tonnage when compared to past heavy cruisers: The US Alaska Class cruisers built for WW II weighed in at about 30,000 tons; and the design was to specifically counter German pocket battleships and Japanese heavy cruisers.
The Worcester Class (built after WW II) came in at about 18,000 tons fully loaded.
Light cruisers typically came in about half (or less) of these tonnage.
It's going to depend on the weaponry and defenses mounted on the ships to determine if these larger than normal current cruisers worldwide makes sense long term.

The actual setup is as logical as having 64 turret guns that can fire only one shell... Logically, the ship don't need 64 or 96 launching bays. They should have a couple of 8 launch bays with an automatic reloading system that would take missiles from a reserve to the launch bay with a reloading process taking about a minute or so to be complete. And then, it would be easier to refill the ship with ordinance once the reserve is depleted...
