Nice video and method for introducing the pup to a live bird. I once made the mistake of crippling a crow which my lab then attempted to retrieve. I tried to call him back but was unsuccessful. The crow pecked the heck out of him as I was worried it would and my lab was bird shy for a couple of weeks afterward. So be very careful about all live bird contact or you can screw up your dog!

@madtabby66 ya dont worry about the pointing. i got an english setter who is now 7 months old. when he was 4 months he did not give 2 craps about pointing a bird. he thought that a quail wing was the most stupid thing in the world. one time i put 2 quail ina a little pin and he took the pin with his mouth fliping it ad trying to get them out. it all really comes with matureity(sorry if i spelled tht wrong)

My Brittany (4 months) loves her pigeons, but isn't pointing. I've been told not to worry about it "the pointing will come". She actually came running when the bird started squawking in your video.

You might consider introducing a dead bird prior to any live bird work so that a young pup develops the boldness needed to know what in fact a bird is - that it won't aggress the pup. With a softer dog, the process you used might have back-fired. I've seen lots of young pups - just weeks old - stand and point. The greatest motivation for this type of point is fear of the unknown. It's hardly something you can base a pup's future on. Actually, it tells you very little. A Chihuahua pup will point.

I've just caught a bird which has a broken wing, im trying to rehabilitate it. I just want to make sure, Is this to make the pup Bird friendly? Or Bird Hungry?

Most of these places will actually breed the birds themselves too allow for out of season training and shooting.

Do not introduce the flushing breeds in this manner because it may result in soft flushes. The last thing you want to do to Labs, Springers, etc. is make them pointers. Soft flushers are also created by training with rabbits, this is the English method, which is not favored in this country.
