Fixing BMW X5 Window Regulators for 2$?! - e46/e38/e39/e53/e90

- In this video I address a very common issue with bmw from 99-2006.
At some point we all deal with a broken window regulator. But why does it happen in the first place?? Stay tune to this video to fine out this BMW *Hack I have been using for years to prevent this from happening!

Maybe my '02 X5 that I bought new is different, but when I changed my driver's side window regulator I also replaced the black clips that Bimmer Dude mentions here. My black clips had the factory metal inserts in them (this is the part the bolt passes through, which appears to have been missing from Bimmer Dude's black window clip), which I reused on the new black clips. To be clear, where Bimmer Dude inserted the white plastic license plate mounting piece into his window clip, my window clip already had the metal factory insert in place.
One of my customers has this same issue on a 2002 X5....... Thank you VERY much for taking the time to make this video and for the great tip (smile).
Wow excellent my wife yesterday had window come down raining, ,dark etc so i stripped the driver side door and have found the exact problem on her 2004 e52 x5 first time in the 7 years we had it,really good informative and cheap improvement on original .Shopping tomorrow thanks a bunch
Awesome fix!! I lost that damn clip bushing. Somewhere! It fell, don't know where to. License plate screws. Genius...
Me too, ended up overnighting one but then saw this video. I'm going to return it and just use the license plate hack 😅
If you disconnect the battery FIRST you can unplug the airbag and you will not need a code reader to clear the error. REMOVE BATTERY TERMINAL FIRST! Before playing with airbag connector. Then plug airbag bag in, finish window then reconnect battery.
Nah that's what noobs do. Not once have they ever gone off in the history of people repairing these regulators. Waste of time. Plus it will take almost as long to get to the battery in these cars and then put everything back by having to take out the tire and putting back the tire in the truck. Pain in the ass and waste of energy. The airbags don't' get off as these are not the sensors but just the airbags. The actual trigger sensors that triggers them to go off are in the bumpers and corners of the car not in the door.

Very well made and helpful tutorial video!! Did you place a nut on the backside when you screwed in the Hillman kit screw and expansion washer? I'm assuming you didn't . Also, were there any fixed spacing issues using the screw and washer from the Hillman kit?
Thanks for the video. I just picked up an '03 X5 and sure enough..the rear drivers side window is no longer connected to the regulator so it falls down as you hit bumps. I can here the regulator working when you hit the button but the window doesnt do anything. I couldnt help but notice that gorgeous e36 with hard top in the background!! Very nice

Thanks for the vid. All the plastic clips and parts on our X5 just shatter when i try moving them. Very brittle. Hope our windows never break down again

does anyone you have a link or part number for the window clips? the ones that are actually for the window prior to mod.
David-I found mine on Amazon, 4 came in the pack. look in the Auto Parts section and just type in window clips for repairing window that won't stay up-I listed my make and model and which door I needed it for. It popped right up, they're very cheap, too!!
Amazon has them for under $10.

Is it really safe to move around the airbag module with the battery still connected?
Your installing it back wards I put the clip the same way you did what out the modification and it fell out you need to specify that your doing it backwards to modify it

Beamer dude that was a cool mod. A lot of beamer fans tend not to do what bmw hasn't did. And that is exactly what you did! Bottom line is to get a better fix than that of the factory. Reason they do these type of non permanent attachments so that everybody that being the companies that produce such nuts, bolts, clips,blabla bla . Sharing the spoils.. Keep up the cool mods beamer guy! Cool vid.

Oh one other thing ... In most cases when a certain part is designed the specifics of its curvatures or tips or anything of that matter has a purpose. Just beware of that when clipping tips from clips.. Food for thought.
Hey Bimmer Dude!! I have a 2003 BMW X5- How do I know if it needs the Motor replaced or just the clips and regulator Without the motor?? Need to try and fix this myself, I'm in a pickle as to what I actually need to fix?? It's the RRear window and will roll about half way up and Stops! I have it covered with tape to keep the rain out!! Will order the part when I KNOW what it needs. I've watched dozens of videos and so far-Yours is the easiest to understand. Thanks for being precise! I know it's hard to diagnose without "Hands On", but can you tell me What to look for to know if I need a new regulator with or without motor?! hey thanks for the kind words!. the general rule of thumb is that if it get stuck on its way up is 90% the regulator track. which would mean you should but the whole assembly. I would go for one with the motor already attached to insure everything is new and fresh! Good luck!
@@BimmerDude , Will DO. I already bought the license plate enforcers, Now I will get one with a motor attached. I didn't mention it earlier, however, the Driver's side door window is ALSO messed up, a guy I know pit some pieces of wood in between the window and the panel so the window won't roll down (like a stint) but I want it fixed. I don't have money for a mechanic at this time. I appreciate your help. I'm gonna go for it!! It's been Jerry-rigged!! Not Cool for my "Beamer Baby"!

The door clips look identical on x5 318i e46 e53 or even x5 are they the same? Plenty x5 available not many e46 , thanks

How many oem black clips did you use 1 or 2 with the license plate piece sandwiched in-between the 2?

Have you had a window regulator break after this fix?
Negative. Typically the reason they break is because these clips start to give in anyone direction
After you cut the top off the clip you mention installation is reverse ?? What do you mean ? (and cutting the clip didnt make sense);
My opinion here, the clip doesn't need to be cut. the clip goes on in the same way but the "nut" is inserted in reverse into the front side and not from the back as the original.

German engineers - lets overengineer everything and make the whole car more complicated. Yes lets do that. [result takes about 2 years]
A crafty person - I just clip off a part from your highly deveolped engineering result, flip it around and add some general store plastic so it works better. [result takes about 2 hours]

Do I really need that two white things and the bolts? I can only find that two black plastic things on eBay.
he didn't explain it right for people who never done this job before. the black clip thing is already on the car you don't need to buy them. you just need to buy the white part that comes with screws. take out the factory bolt and nut. install the white clip on the black clip and use the screw that came with it. my window was working before. the problem was it was getting stuck going up
@@M7md7534 Dude, You dont get it. The white clips are brittle and breaks. Thats why he has to change them. DUH.
