    Love the breakdown on Cyclops. Just need to add one thing. It’s not actually a problem to see his blast heat up some materials. It’s because of friction which his blast does generate. I did a whole Reddit post about this a while back with tons of comic scans that confirm this. Imagine a stream of particles moving at light speed scraping against a surface like sandpaper. If it doesn’t get blown apart instantly, it’ll heat up.

    Considering the first crop of X-Men movies came out when canon Marvel was taking a backseat to Ultimate Marvel, I think their powers are pretty similar to their comic counterparts. The X-Men specifically just seem to have the same problem that practically everyone in DC has - that every character is somehow the most powerful being in the universe when the story requires it.

      @@jinxie712 It depends. Ultimate Marvel came out before the first X-Men movie, but Ultimate X-Men didn't start until after it. However, because they had already been featured in Ultimate Spider-Man, I'm willing to say the movie versions of the characters were inspired by the comics. But it could be the other way around.

    For Cyclops, it will matter more than most who plays him in the MCU.
    No fresh faced lad..
    No popular Jock...
    No pretty boy syndrome..
    He needs gristle and presence. A leader not just in title, but beholden and apparent.

    • @Ameersuhail
      @Ameersuhail ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Chris Evans was able to do just fine in that department as Cap, despite being very good looking. It's the writing, direction and character choices that ultimately matter. Cyclops is like Captain America/Batman for Mutants, but with energy based powers instead of superhuman strength. Not to mention, he has pulled the most hot telepathic chicks in the entire roster since the 80s/90s lol. Jean, Emma, Betsy, Madelyn, all had a thing for him at one point or another, which goes to show he's definitely got sex appeal.

    • @beatooze8025
      @beatooze8025 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@Ameersuhail could you claim that Chris Evans back when he was Human Torch, could have pulled off Cap in EndGame? Probably not. Chris, as he aged, was able to pull off the more commander role and less of the pretty boy role.
      Yes, writers have a huge.. HUGE! part. But if the actor is not believable in that role then no matter how great the writing is, it won't be quality.
      Fine me a younger Denzel Washington, you got a deal. Find me a younger Gerard Butler and you got a deal.
      Someone in their early Thirties so I don't get uncomfortable when they have a deadly sex icon as a Girlfriend/Wife/Clone.

      @Ameersuhail ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@beatooze8025 I can definitely see where you're coming from, but I'd argue that he needed the right script and director to bring it out of him, not necessarily the age thing.
      People never cast Chris in serious roles, he was being typecast as the pretty chocolate rom-com lead, and you gotta put food on the table, even if you're interested in doing different work. His patience paid off, and now he's doing more diverse work.
      Whereas someone like Jason Momoa or the Rock, regardless of the script and direction and their age, seem to be one-trick ponies, and wouldn't work unless they're playing some version of themselves, because that's all they can do. It's almost impossible to tell their characters apart, except for the clothing and the franchise.

  • @Kiyosuki

    Yeah Cyclops, Storm, Rogue and Iceman all got it really hard in that department. Especially Cyclops though, who I think was just the biggest victim of the late-stage Wolverine-madness that swept the 90's that definitely leaked into the movies (though to be fair Hugh Jackman's natural charisma certainly helped.) To this day poor Scott is written off at a layman's level so often and I think it has a lot to do with how much he's intentionally written down to make Wolverine look even cooler, and its unfortunate because his character, like him or hate him, has gone through some really interesting character arcs and like you said, his powers are no joke. His extra-spatial awareness alone is supposed to be superhuman, and yet he's suckerpunched all the time in the movies (where he gets to exist anyways.) to say nothing of his tactical genius. He's just never sold as the undisputed leader of the X-Men (same with Storms' not unsubstantial leadership capability as well I might add.)
    If there's any character, other than Storm, who could benefit more from a big time general audiences glowup when X-Men hits the MCU (I mean, if it does at this rate...or if it'll matter.) its definitely Cyclops. They have a chance to practically reinvent the character in the general public's eyes. He's been done so dirty for far too long.

    The problem is that in movies characters who are too powerful aren't really interesting. They need to be powered down to be compelling and not just wish-fulfillment Peggy Sue. Each new writer who puts the character in peril inevitably ends up upgrading a character's power levels to win the latest High Stakes Struggle... until you have the earth swarming with dozens of god-like Spandexians. Canon is constantly upgrading their power. But in a movie, entertainment is based on interesting characters confronting the limitations of their powers. Comics are about enjoying the idea of being more powerful than others.
    All it takes is one writer writing in one issue to do a marginal upgrade so resolve whatever conflict they've concocted. Then the next writer has that character perform an even more outlandish feat 6 issues later. Then repeat with the same characters over a 50 year history of never aging, and ---wallah-- they become gods. A fully powered fully canonical superhero would be a boring movie, worse than Hancock.
    If you want a good movie, you don't want to see a Scott Summers who can blast a skyscraper to bits just by peaking through his eyelashes or a Storm who can unleash hurricanes on the other side of the planet just by groping the humidity. Characters who don't have to _work_ in order to solve problems aren't entertaining.

    The problem with at least the 1st 2 movies is the budget and they got someone that isn’t an effects director. He didn’t have that type of imagination. This is the same guy that said they could have Apocalypse grow big because he wouldn’t look good swatting at planes (King Kong reference). He said the MCU did better than his movies because they had Tony Stark as a likable character. Which is funny because Logan was his Stark character.
    But anyway, Age of Apocalypse was long over and done before he made the 1st movie. In that series Rogue permanently took the powers of a dying Polaris. Giving her magnetic powers. In the movies they couldn’t give her the powers of Ms Marvel because they didn’t have the character. In AoA they made her feel like regular Rogue with flight and magnetically enhanced strength. In the movies, she drained Magneto for a long time. I’m just saying…

      You don't need to mention Carol Danvers by name, just have a line or reference saying "I got this strength from this other lady all in black, though I do feel guilty about what that did to her, etc." or something. They do it in movies all the time. Or they can have her do it to a completely original character with a similar powerset, as a plot device. Singer was just shit at his job and didn't care about the source material. Toad taking out the 3 most elite X-Men? by himself? TOAD?! Sure.

All other characters are hardly more than glorified cameos to give the illusion it's a superhero movie. Another hot take. Singer’s 4 big comic book movies is him copying other movies. He said he went to George Lucas about working with CGI since X-men was the 1st time he’s done it. Instead X1 and 2 are just Star Wars A New Hope and Empire Strikes Back. Superman Returns is just a remake of Superman ‘78. Then… he said he went to James Cameron on how to work with time travel for Days of Future Past… Instead he just made Terminator 2 with mutants. I mean they went out of their way to make Logan with his metal skeleton the one to time travel like T-800. The one to stop was a shapeshifter (was a mystery villain for the team). They broke Magneto out of prison like Sarah. They went after the guy that built the robots. The person to save was a mental hacker because he was important to the future (Xavier/John). Killed future guy by drowning in liquid. None of that was in the book, but was in T2.

    3:44 There was a time, early on when I read comics, I read some a paperback-sized compilation of three _Uncanny X-Men_ issues that built up sort of built up the prologue to what would be known as “The Dark Phoenix Saga.” Yes, there were paperback-sized reprints back in those days, and reading those was not unlike manga-no color, but smaller package.
    Anyway, I fell in love with the character Cyclops. Not just because he had a great look and powers, but on mission, he was the definitely the leader, kind of a no-nonsense First Sergeant of Xavier’s team.*
    Also, Summers could use his powers like a pool hall bank shot, being uncannily able to track multiple targets and take them out in one ricochet! Later in life, I would wonder (without offense) if Scott Summers was just that good, or maybe just partially into the autistic spectrum, and so that just came naturally. The latter might also explain the lack of control Summers has over the howitzer in his head-more so, I think than a head injury.
    Anyway, I don’t think Scott Summers was nerfed in just power, I think in the films, he lost that power of leadership to Wolverine, and all of his sense-he should’ve seen some of what happened to him in _X-3_ coming! But that’s Hollywood!
    But I understand it also started happening in the books, too…
    * The X-Men always struck me as the personal paramilitary team that Xavier built in the guise of “gifted students”, but rationalized to himself they were simply a force of Good-but even then, the X-Men felt like some sort of unauthorized paramilitary force, and it often struck me that Xavier took a disingenuous view of Cable’s X-Force, an unapologetic paramilitary force.
    It seemed like Xavier was just beginning to recognize the Gold and Blue teams for the paramilitary forces they were in the early 90’s-but Jim Lee left, Image happened, Marvel became nearly bankrupt, and the whole shebang almost went down the maelstrom to obscurity, and after that, I’d say _everybody_ got nerfed or mucked up or suddenly redefined (see Bobby Drake) somehow.
    Is it any wonder, for the last two years I’ve decided to read _no new_ stories from the Big Two companies published after January 1992?

      The Surfer is capable of destroying whatever planet the hulk is on. (Without needing a dumb power boost to do so)
      The Surfer can move, think, and react at light speed. I want you to think about that for a moment. Then imagine how slow it must seem that the Hulk moves. Imagine you can destroy a planet. Or create one. Create life. Travel at light sped (which means you can think and move and react at faster than light speed, and you can deal with the damage of striking an object at those speeds). You have ranged blasts of energy than can destroy worlds. You can travel through time. You can rearrange the atoms of virtually anything from light years away (enough to destroy a planet, or turn the hulk to dust - matter manipulation is next level).
      And your opponent is a strong and tough humanoid. They are slow. They are strong. Physically stronger than you … eventually … if they build up enough anger, but not right away. And they have no innate ranged attacks aside from throwing things or clapping. And in space he is virtually helpless with nothing to push off of and no way to move.
      How hard would it be to keep out of range? The hulk can do virtually NOTHING if he can’t put his hands on you. Spider-Man and captain America have survived hits from the hulk. Hulk to the captain is weaker than a kitten is compared to you (and don’t give me that, he rolled with it crap). How long will it take hulk to get angry enough that his strength is even a potential threat? How many nanoseconds would you need to destroy the hulk as the surfer?
      The hulk would basically be frozen in time. Completely stationary. 186,400 that how many miles the surfer can travel each second. You think a 30mph (0.008 miles per second) hulk could even possibly touch the surfer?
      That’s what it means to be able to think and react at those speeds. Even someone like quicksilver is nothing when it comes to speed by comparison (I think originally quicksilver’s top speed was like a couple hundred miles per hour).
      The hulk would be helpless against someone like the silver surfer …. Unless the story is badly written. That happens a lot.
      But, think about how fast the surfer can move. Think about how far away the surfer is deadly. Don’t forget about the surfer’s cosmic awareness.
      What are the hulk’s rules this week? Is he banner? Is he green? Is he grey? What are his limits? He isn’t very fast. How would hulk deal with someone 100ft away? 100 miles?

    I conclude, after doing further reading, that optic heat vision is more plausible than inter-dimensional concussive blasts. Furthermore, as this is Scott's primary power he utilizes it in a more effective and creative way than Superman so there isn't any competition to justify changing the power. The concussive force could be a byproduct of his heat blast but is best suited as a vocal power like that of Banshee or concussive blasts projected from someone's fist.

    Every character gets nerfed for the Movies because you can't have a believable story otherwise. The movie would be over in 2 sec. Either the villain chosen would be too powerful to defeat or the heroes are too powerful for the villain to pose a threat. So, some characters get nerfed so all the fan favorites can be in the movie and the movie still kind of make sense. I actually think a reboot of the comics are needed to balance the characters better. No more "Hulk is so strong, he can punch a hole in space/time" because that is in the comics.
    Darwin got super nerfed. I don't think an explanation is needed. He needs to be on this list at the top.
    Super agree with Storm. Fun fact: She controls the weather of the planet/atmosphere she is in and is capable of creating anything that is remotely possible on that planet. Making her powers really neat if she is ever on an alien world but theoretically makes her weaker if she is on a space station.
    I think both Wolverine and Sabretooth got nerfed but in a different way. Their powers are about right, but they both are supposed to be extremely well-trained fighters/martial artists. However, you mostly just see them swinging wildly. I know Wolverine will go berserk and just Ferally slash away in the comics, but that is not his default move, its last resort. In the first X-Men, Sabretooth fights like a bear, and Wolverine has trouble fighting Mystique. I'd like to see the versions of them that have been trained by Weapon X, Special Forces, Ninjas, and Samurai.
    Iceman is godlike powerful in the comics at his full potential. Besides being able to reach near absolute 0 around him (Which will kill most things) and being nearly indestructible, like the liquid metal terminator, He is able to cause cataclysmic storms much like Storm, but with less control, by lowering the temperatures in the atmosphere causing extreme low-pressure formations like tornadoes.

    Sick video man! I'm a massive comic book fan but know nothing compared to you. Still need to watch new mutants. Will be subscribing and watching further videos :)

      Bruh no shit, lol she manipulates weather systems. The woman can make acid rain or natural hydrogen cluster bombs (due to atmospheric pressure) when given enough time to concentrate. This kinda also means Storm is probably 2nd smartest in terms of science on the X-Men, cause this means she has to understand how chemistry works in flux to control the forces of nature.
      Beast is undoubtedly the smartest relative to scientific matters. I'd say Storm is next, Jean (master of psychiatry and psychology), then Forge (engineering genius), Scott (knows physics), Thunderbird (cause he can read body language better than anyone), etc.

      @@murk4552 I don't know if forge belongs that high, it's been stated that his powers don't exactly make him smarter per se, they just make him able to understand the way machines work. Like, Tony Stark and Reed Richards can make the same types of things he can, maybe slightly worse, but they're smarter than him with engineering (and obviously other topics). He just intuitively knows what kind of things will do what, maybe picked up some tricks along the way, but it's mostly his powers, not a whole lot just him
