People, please don’t do the dangle test unless you know what you’re doing. It could be dangerous for the poor little guys. Chickens are such lovely birds.
Please do not pick up baby chicks by the head or neck. This will reveal the gender no better than flipping a coin. The actual reason they kick or dangle their legs is from the fight, flight, or freeze response. However, his info on the wing method can be very beneficial. The best time to do this is at one week of age.
That’s absolutely incorrect. The dangle trick is a myth I tried that and they all fought back and kicked feet up out of all four I ended up with one rooster and 3 hens! So you can’t rely on dangle myth!!
He knows this. Thats why he barely held it for a second when the chick was dangling cos he didnt want to look like an idI0t as the chick would have kicked too.
I've done the dangle method many times. But the opposite is true. If it struggles it's a male. The last two times I bought chicks from my local feed store & had the attendant sex them this way. Got all hens both times
I've raised chickens for years and I personally love the wing sexing method. I have yet to be wrong using that method and it is a method that you can use from day one to a couple weeks old. If you're also not for sure on how to do the wing sex then you can watch them as they grow. On females the feathers grow much faster including the tail feathers. On a rooster the feathers grow really slowly and the comb will grow faster and turn Pinker much quicker. I'm not a big fan of picking the chick up by the neck to see if it picks its feet up because they are likely to snap their necks if you don't know how to hold them properly. Which unfortunately most people don't. Another method is vent sexing and you have to look up how to properly hold a check for vent sexing to work correctly. I also raise mallard ducks and the only way to sex a duck is to vent sex them. There is no Wing method.
Yes you can use the wing sex method for silkie chickens but it is very difficult due to the fact of their feather pattern is a lot different than most chickens. The best way to sex a silkie is to vent sex it. Waiting for the Waddles to turn colors doesn't necessarily work for these chickens due to the fact that their skin is black.
I agree. I over a year ago and when I checked my four that I had I had two male and two female. The males are more aggressive and kick and the females dangled limp and gently.
Ok so I bought some baby chicks and the girl that was getting the chicks out of the pen was saying that a woman was telling her that test you just demonstrated and said if they try to fight back they are roosters so then I decided to take 5 or the (roosters) to sale them to a guy and he looks at them and tells me they where all hens needless to say she told me backwards I don't put to much stock in what they say about the dangling and feathers tests I'll keep my chickens till it is crowing and laying eggs then I'll know what is what lol
Yea, it’s a complete myth. Most chicks will kick and pull up if you dangle them by the head (you saw his last acclaimed rooster also kicked, but he stopped quickly). The actual reason they kick or dangle their legs is from the fight, flight, or freeze response.
I have to tell you... last June I picked out six day old hens. All six dropped their feet. All six are laying now. All six dropped their feet and relaxed in my hand.
I've not heard of the paintbrush method. I was told it's the single row or double row of feathers that tell what sex it is. The dangle method I wouldn't do. If a chicken freaks out too bad, I'd be afraid it would break their neck.
Never dangle like that. You should make sure to find the back of the skull bone and hold that between your fingers on both sides…NEVER at the “nape” by feathers and skin. This guy proved he was just making videos for content…not information with that last one. He said it was a boy when it acted just like the “girls”….but to be honest he didn’t even hold them right to dangle tested ..PROPERLY…so who knows 🤷🏻♀️ They could all be boys who felt strangled! 👎🏼’d
all of them kicked, and you were quick to put the last one down when he started kicking. And no, you shouldn't put out a video unless you have tested the method yourself. The hanging method is also proven wrong a long time ago. You are wrong.
This isnt accurate its a myth dont try this and research sexing methods, this will only harm your chicks, vemt sexing should be done by professionals only as it could kill your chick. Best way is to wait and see signs from 4weeks of age or sex links and feather sexing are ways too on certain breeds. Please do ypur research guys!
I’ve heard that too! Had a lady tell me her dog stretched his legs backward when she laid down and she knew by that she was pure bred... lol. I say no, she was hot and cooling her belly. Now, I don’t know about these chicks.
Pull me up by my neck and see if I don't start kicking too 😅😅😅
Yep I graduated from youtube university in over 200 things now got my masters by now lol
I like how on the last one he was so quick to put it down as it started to lift its feet
Hahaha...
True true. Saw that too. Ha ha ha
Yep, i noticed that too. And it had two lengths of wings, so im thinking it was a female not male.
I noticed the same thing. HAHA
😂 I was thinking the same thing
That last one was about to kick but you stopped him fast
Agreed. All of us saw it. Not sure of the point of this video. The poster is a liar.

damn this is the best video on this subject

Certainly there is difference of behavior when it comes to danger between roosters and chickens

I saw that with him on last one😂😂😂
No it's true but male fights continuesly while female will give up after few seconds
The dangling method seems cruel...
Don’t dangle by the head. 😤
Gota love TH-cam university lol
He isna sissy rooster cause he picked his feet up lolol
the feathers look like a roo on that last one yes, but it kicked its feet up as well. Im a firm believer of the wing method over this
I Liked the video bc he watched TH-cam videos and is now an expert
Let's believe guys, he's an expert. He's been through TH-cam videos

@Tori Neeley Hi, I have a question for you here: Why can the same method be applied to sexing Silky chicks???

It works. Other methods are more reliable.

Got my first chickens today. But my breeder said the ones that struggles when dangled is male, the ones that stays still are females
Plot twist: he wanted to get rid of the roosters.
I agree. I over a year ago and when I checked my four that I had I had two male and two female. The males are more aggressive and kick and the females dangled limp and gently.
It’s a hen it kicked up at the end😂😂
When they start to crow around 8 weeks you will know or vent check!
Crowing at 8 weeks ? What breed is that?
I think the the expert's got it all mixed up...the paint brush tips are the males and the feathers the females.
No wonder everybody’s kicking?... Who would have not kicking when being hang? expert??😛
That last one he called a rooster done exactly what the so called hens did!
What an idiot! And the look on his face said he knew he was an idiot!
thanks for the tip

Vent sexing is actually the most accurate method feather sexing would be the next best thing I wouldn't try the dangle them lol

Wrong
Does this work in silkies?
I was thinking that too😂
I tried wing sexing my silkies and thought I had hens but they turned out to be roosters 🙈
@@amyl5783 Same😂
That is a lot of views: must be because of how funny

No, no, no! Don’t dangle them! It scares them and can hurt them!
The worker at the feed store showed me both these tricks, unfortunately he was wrong and I have a couple of roosters.🤦♀️
You don’t hold in the neckskin. You hold with your finger around de base of the skull. Male= fight. Hen=is calm.
My grandparents showed me hold the by their feet it it trys to get but up right it's a hen if it just dangs down it's a rooster
You got all rooster
Nice try - 'they' tell me it depends on the breed... My Silkie hens did both and the cockerel wasn't ready! As you say you're an eggspert on TH-cam! 👍
Lmao what a load o f BS
I just ask them for their pronounces.
The last one was older than a day and it was definitely a female! I am an expert.
I've not heard of the paintbrush method. I was told it's the single row or double row of feathers that tell what sex it is. The dangle method I wouldn't do. If a chicken freaks out too bad, I'd be afraid it would break their neck.
Look so cute thank you for share a good video+
The wing and the head will tell you if it's a male or female. No need to stretch thir necks .. or at least not yet..lol
Bwahahahahaha
Could I keep my roosters outside the coop? To ward off predators?
7 months later was it accurate
no
I actually think it’s the opposite😅😅😅.!!?!?!?!?!
You do know dogs can be trained to use sent to determine sex of a chick.

For me u can see it if a male or female when they where one month old
Does this work for pheasants? I know these are chickens but I’m trying to sex my pheasants. Sorry, thank you.

How do you tell at four weeks? Wondering my daughter got chickens we had them I want to say goin on a month and half now
Feet up = Male
Feet down (relaxed) = Female.
Wrong information
this is not very precise just wait the the crow that it
