I totally get what you were saying about going up to the Burj. When we were in New York we skipped the Empire State Building and did Top of the Rock instead. Our thinking is you want to see the Empire State Building in the iconic view

Probably the first time I've seen an honest and unbiased review of Dubai. As resident of this city for over 25 years, I've pretty much only seen deeply biased and negative videos. This includes videos from creators who have never even visited and have only piggy-backed on articles from western media. Thanks phoebe for being absolutely real and coming here with an open-mind.
If you were to visit again, I'd recommend the following to experience (or at least get a glimpse) of the real Dubai:
1. Explore the bazaars, stores and restaurants of Bur Dubai, Karama and Deira (old Dubai).
2. Eat at some local favorites: Ravi's, Al Safadi, Bu Qatir, Gazebo, Al fanar.
3. Take an Abra or dhow cruise up and down the creek and Dubai canal. My parents used these services to commute to their offices in the 90s.
4. Some of the classic tourist attractions you may have missed: Dubai Fountain, Gold Souk, Spice Souk, Miracle Garden, Global Village
5. Arabic and Islamic art galleries are plenty in Dubai!

I understand where you are coming from, everyone has their own preferences, I am different I love Dubai & that style of city where so many tourists are all together everywhere there & most of the locals are expats. I love being among other tourists & I love that type of vibe. Who knows you might enjoy it more the next time you're there.

I remember being there when the mall was a gold suke, a 31 flavors, and ice skating rink.
Did the Sunset safari. After the dune ride, there's dinner + show. Check Dubai old city, Al seef, souk markets & walk around the river (Dubai creek) area.

Dubai can be very different for everyone. For authenticity I'd recommend to try super deep diving experience and crazy hot 🔥 climbing under the sun.

You are one of the best vloggers I have found on TH-cam. I think you should consider videos of Perth, Southwest Western Australia, Mooloolaba, and dare I say it ... Bora Bora. Why not? Go for it.
Just a new viewer, and an older young 74 old traveller. As I got older I found it was very easy to nose out the authentic. I am, like you, love the good things in life but need that authenticity 😊😅 glad you are seeing it that way. I always found that if I lived in the area for an extended time I found a more meaningful life. Even if I had only 4 weeks I would rather "do" 1 area and wait till next break to do another area.

Harriet and I have mixed feelings of Dubai . We were there for 7 days . Hard to connect with locals in such a short period of time. Very international and very transient. We did get to go to
the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve , The city of Hatta and the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. All nice places to visit. In many ways, Dubai offers many comforts of home.
We are big fans of Tim Hortons. Comfort food for a very reasonable price. Perhaps, another visit might give you more time to connect with the old Dubai. Great work as always Phoebe.

Hard to meet the locals. They're off in a compound somewhere being waited. The nice people you see are nearly all foreign workers, many of whom are treated badly.

Yay for Tim Hortons! Hi from Vancouver, 🇨🇦! Didn’t know your step-dad’s Canadian. Dubai reminds me of Macau. It tries so hard to be a carbon copy of Western opulence and cranks it up. What usually happens is the real city gets pushed back.
Another Tim Hortons fan! 🇨🇦 Just one of the Canadian things I am deeply in love with. I get what you are saying about the authenticity thing. I could spend a few days looking at the millionaires playground stuff but just a few days. I have a friend who raves about Dubai and is well travelled, but it's not calling out to me. I like old stuff too much.

Dubai does take some getting used to I suppose. It’s a lot to take in, and it does seem so tourist driven. I hear the old city is a little more local so maybe check that out and see if that gives you a different vibe! ❤
I was hoping I'd be able to connect and find more of the true connection but, as you'll see in next week's episode, it was a rough second attempt haha
The real dubai is its lifestyle, international mindset, friendly people, safety, different experiences all being in an Arabic country. Think of it like New York, it is super touristy and one would need extended period of time to digest how it functions. Don’t also forget that Dubai is a city in a big country. If you need to see more authentic things then other emirates/cities are just a short drive away (or a long one depending on what you are looking for).

Hi, Phoebe. Dubai is a city built on sand in the last 30-40 years with no previous history. 85% of its population are expats, so UAE is not a typical country where a lot of locals live. They just rent out their land and build skyscrapers to amuse the world. And by the way, they don’t have a centralised sewage system.

@@travelforphoebe Let me correct myself: they didn’t have a central sewage system in 2000s, even when most of their skyscrapers existed. They started building it afterwards, but 30% of its sewage waste still transported by trucks.
Been living in duabi for more than 8 years, there is a centralized sewage system in dubai, just the Burj khalifa wasn't connected because of financial crunch of 2008 they had to launch it right away, which is now connected well with the sewage system, So please stop believing everything you see on the internet and what western media portrays middle east. And locals do live in downtown and marina, The palm 95% owned by people from UK, US, Europe and Australians. So without proper knowledge please don't comment rubbish.

@@uae_project Dubai as a city doesn’t have a real history. The locals were camel breeders for much of their history. This is very good but without city building traditions, rapid growth of Dubai looks very artificial plus 85% of its inhabitants are foreigners.

I did go up the Burj. The cue had A nice flow and there is a lot of history from the construction as you move your way up. I think it’s worth it. Dubai creek and Old Dubai is a nice place as well.
But I felt everything was fake. Way too catered to tourists. Abu Dhabi was way better for me. I understood the history and why Dubai feels the way it feels. People were incredibly friendly. The sunset “safari” had a dance show, dinner.
Thanks for the video. Go to old Dubai by catching the old river taxis (like 5dhs) and visit the gold souk. JBR beach area is nice but touristy, also souk madinat Jumeirah has nice Arabian l vibes but is actually modern.

I think the best part of your vlogs, Phoebe, is that you are honest. Not just with your viewers, but with yourself, and that is shown quite well in this week's video. It's also prompted me (along with a rare day off for me of late) to return to a Rob's Review:
* Big fan of your new graphics designs and insertions. The flying video screens worked well to reflect the absolute bombardment you must have felt from all of the vlogs. I know I felt like that sometimes when we were researching for our trips (thank the Maker we found you!). I like the quiet insertion of the "subscribe and like" banner. Cool motion in it, so it attracts your attention, but it doesn't interrupt the flow of the video. Same with the infographic on the malls; supports what's being said without interrupting the flow. And, of course, you already know we all love the "Travel for Phoebe" logo!
* I intensely dislike malls, but usually enjoy the ancillary areas. I think I'd be like you...check out the mall, but enjoy the scenery around it. I imagine it was difficult to not just want to stare at the Burj Khalifa all day...what an amazing building. It is a beautiful looking cityscape!
* We used to go to Canada every summer and I so miss TimBits! The food at the mall food looked so...American-chain-blah! I get the need for comfort food, especially while traveling, but I can't help but wonder if that may have contributed to your not connecting immediately to Dubai. From our experience, part of why we immediately connected with Brisbane was by going to all of those wonderful local places you suggested (Erin seriously misses John Mills Himself while I want to go back to NoDo). I know this is the first video of the series, so I'm hoping you were able to find some "local" cuisine while there--guess we'll just have to wait and see.
* Technical note, of which I'm sure you're aware: your main vlogging camera has a spot on the far right, just below center. Any idea what it might be? (Although, it let's me know when you're using your iPhone for the B-rolls! 😂).
* I hate heights, so I'd stay on terra firma and "see the thing," when it comes to the Burj. But there is a temptation to do it and be able to say "I was there."
* You'd think a city based on so much wealth and extravagance would want to have something like "world's best public transportation." Oh, well.
* Friendly locals make the journey so much better.
* I've commented before that, like you, we love going to local grocery stores--it's a weird, but truly effective way to understand locals. Getting to see so much of what's offered and how it's different from home (plus it's cheaper than eating out all the time!).
* You picked a fantastic hotel! A "home away from home" with a heck of a view.*
* Okay...now for the part of the video that brought me to a halt. The cat on your chopsticks is named Gigi. He's a character from the Studio Ghibli movie "Kiki's Delivery Service." In the American version, he's voiced by Phil Hartman. He's one of my absolute favorite characters and, I wish there was a way to show you a pic, I have similar chopsticks! 😁Only mine are orange! You can imagine my delight when you showed them! And what a great suggestion, which we shall henceforth take (according to Erin): take your own chopsticks with you on travels. Brilliant.
* Really cool using the map with quick animation while describing the two main places to stay. Well done. Also, great info on why you picked the hotel you did.
* Absolutely gorgeous sunset.
* It's been so long since the last GMYG! Been missing it in my life!
* Wow...that's your idea of "messy," eh? You should try traveling with Erin! (I'm gonna get smacked for that comment 🤣). Actually, I agree with another comment made earlier--thanks for showing, again, that you're just like us--human and the hotel ain't so neat when we're in it!
* Sometimes doing a "touristy" thing is worth doing. Here in the land of Disney World there are sooo many "touristy" things to do and some are actually worth it. Just think, you can now say you rode a camel in the desert and boarded down a sand dune! Yup, it was super touristy, but it looked like you did have a fun time!
* And here's where the video is best--you explaining the initial lack of connection with the city. You don't just say, "Ah, it's fake and shallow." You explain why you have this feeling and then contemplate how to change it (kinda looks like you were explaining to yourself as well as to us while talking to the camera). You did change your opinion on Bangkok after what was it...5 visits? 6? 😉😂 and you figured it out. I sincerely hope that you did eventually connect and we'll get to see that in the coming videos. But, even if you didn't, that's perfectly okay! Really looking forward to seeing what happened.
* I'm a real fan of the taking a pic of yourself in the rearview mirror. You've done it a few times and it's a great way to show off the scenery as well as your enjoyment of it. Might be fun for you to create a collage of all such pics you've done like this over time.
* Awesome that one of the other members of the tour was wiling to video you going down the hill.
* Practical question--gotten easier for you to ask others to join in on your videos? You included some people in S. Africa and then this time. What's the "usual" response? Just curious.
* I like the shot someone took of you sitting on the sand hill...that's a pretty amazing moment to add to your growing collection.
* The ending--again, really enjoy you making these vlogs "real." Honestly telling us, first impression were a mixed bag. And happy that you were wanting to make it work. Here's hoping that it did and looking forward to seeing how it all came out.

Hiya! I was so surprised when I saw an ice rink in Dubai, where it's +30 degrees. Must be eating energy like crazy to keep it frozen. The Dubai fountains are beautiful, a new show every half hour. And to top it off you can eat some Five Guys right next to it with views over the fountains. Was also surprised when I saw the potatoes from Five Guys were originally from The Netherlands, home away from home. The Burj Khalifa was beautifully lit with a light show for the NYE 2017-2018. But the sad story was that the good views were for families and women only. All men were miles away looking from a sand field. That was a turndown. I can confirm the people in Dubai are nice. With that scarf you looked like an Emirates cabin crew member. You've seen something I haven't seen in Dubai, driving and sandboarding through the desert. It looks phenomenal. I had mixed feelings with Dubai as well. Not loving it, not hating it either. Thanks for being so open and for sharing this with us. Have a great week ahead 🤙

Dubai was set up to a Middle Eastern Theme Park with a Western Slant. The Prince of Dubai in the 80s had a vision to turn Dubai into a mix of the Middle East and The West. In a way, Dubai is the US of the Middle East in the fact that so many foreigners were brought over to work on the project that foreigners now out rank locals like 2:1 or 3:1? So I think you either jump in with both feet and enjoy the illusion or you see right through it. Excellent video nonetheless Phoebe.
Yay ... Timmy's (double double)! As a Canadian if I see a Tim Horton's when traveling it's definitely like a warm hug from home. Now you must come to Canada!! Dubai doesn't interest my husband and I at all ... absolutely zero interest. It seems like just a lesson in excess, over consumption and all that is wrong with this world where the bigger the better. Give me a town or city with old world charm, lots of history and a community connection any day. Travel safe!

Unfortunately bloggers and vloggers never show the more authentic parts of Dubai and there's a lot. Satwa, Deira, Old Town (the gold souk is interesting), there are transport boats too.. it's a completely different world.

I agree, dubai is ok, modern, but corporate. Its nothing compared to the Kapama reserve! That gets you right in your heart, to see the animals, roaming free, right next to your jeep. To be woken up every morning with monkeys on your porch! That is special! I guess there is a old dubai and a new dubai. There is a doorway between both of them that we saw when we were in Dubai in November. We were only there for 9 hours so we really didn't explore. Love ya Phoebe!

I forgot to ask, did you have a lot of contact with the monkeys at Kapama? When we were there they would come every breakfast and lunch and wait till the staff went away and then they would come running in and steal fruit and sugar packets! LOL
hahaha oh my gosh! Thankfully I did not - Monkeys are not my favourite animal haha

Went for 5 days returned in 2 days . I hate it
tbh, dubai is very touristy and not really the place for authenticity and definitely a place of glitz and glamour! For me, I would only go to Dubai for a place to chill rather than do 'adventure/exploring' type stuff and their women only beaches are a pro for this. But I know you're not on that type of holiday. Not sure if you are still in Dubai, but maybe see if you can find a local farmers market, and that might be a good place to start. also, if you can, try some authentic Emirati food (its hard to find though..) its seriously yummy - Karak House is a good option. Also, if you have time, the other Emirates in UAE are probz better for a more 'authentic' experience, e.g Abu Dhabi so you may want to visit there but it does involve about a half's day travel... But overall wish your trip gets better and look forward to next weeks vlog!!

Not hot at all! I was in long pants and totally fine :) Just gotta make sure you have some sunscreen on and drink some water as you're out in the direct sun for a while!

I don't know what vlogs you watched but you didn't enjoy it because you chose to do the wrong things. I didn't want to stay in the usual tourist areas so I stayed in Al Seef, with a souk in walking distance and an abra ride on the creek took you to the souks etc. Also Al Fahidi Heritage district was close to my hotel, where you could "get into" Old Dubai. Instead of Waitrose go to Arabian Tea House in Al Fahidi. For the desert safari do Platinum Heritage; everything included even the head scarf. I loved my time in Dubai.

Wow, I can't believe what I'm seeing, I like what I'm seeing here and I'm impressed. I mean, Look around you, This is a paradise on earth, There are so many buildings and The buildings here are beautiful. However, I hate summer because Warm weather makes me feel tired. 0:29 Wow, This is a very nice building and This is a great building. Awe hun unfortunately it’s hard to get into Dubai because it’s a plastic, fake place. I don’t blame you for not jiving with the place. Dubai has no soul whatsoever. I lived there for one year and couldn’t get out of there fast enough. Nothing Authentic about it. I don’t understand what the hype is about. I wish i could of told you to skip it. Not the most inspiring place. Def hard pass. I would choose Bangkok 1000 times over Dubai and i lived there (Dubai) a whole year. Trust me Dubai doesn’t get any better lol - A world full of other places actually worth visiting! (Though you know that already ☺️💜)
