Strafe Mode’s instant disgust into rapid redemption arc was great
I was worried he’d have that one bad experience/understanding and then never touch it again. Glad he was able to see the uses of strafing
same for the jump lol
but I think that one is actually bad it just happened to have a good use

honestly to me strafe mode seems busted, it means that in those times when you keep getting checked, you can escape and still do just as much damage as if you stayed

I learned that if you run out of ammo, and then load one into your chamber, if you continue to move around before firing you will regenerate 1 every move, but if you fire and then move you will only generate 1 every other move because you must load it before you will generate another one.
Yeah that was something I was noticing on his previous runs
He should really spend time retreating for ammo
It might feel faster that way but it takes the same number of turns to fire all your rounds in a single Chamber shotgun, with 2 it matters but 1 it doesnt

don't forget that retreating for ammo also allows enemy pawns to advance their position
I think a lot of people have the wrong philosophy when it comes to upgrades. The game gets harder only because of the upgrades. If you could skip every upgrade for the first 10 floors you could win even against the boss pretty easily at least up until ultra hard. You need to focus on taking the better downgrade more than taking the better upgrade in most cases.
true, but it's more fun to make a cool overpowered build. though at the harder settings it could be better to win than to start a cool build and die on floor 3.
@@bottleojam7469 yeah I agree but even just on hard it already makes the game less fun just by taking away an ammo in gun it’s more like a challenge where you have to play the best but on very hard and king there is absolutely no room for bad downgrades
@@GDVa right, but if you want to have a fun run where you try out a build you can do that on easy mode, while if you want a challenge where you just want to win you can play on a hard difficulty and chose the least bad white cards.
I like how historically, black mist has done _nothing_ and Tyler still finds it preferable 😂
If you update to the latest version, it now protects against king noms and grenades!

That final battle was close, man had so 2 immortal queens along with a bunch of random pieces, and a knight that needed to be killed. Your win there feels like a miracle.

@@polppa2348 He literally talked about how one of his downsides made it so that Kings can't be killed as long as they have a knight on the board during that moment, when he should've oneshot the boss but the text 'guard' popped up.

3:13, strafe mode is the only reason you potentially could have been able to get out of that. Also props to the backup pawn ;) Except for that knight power lol.

Mechanic of the day: turn types. You can categorise all actions in the game into 4 categories, this can help to figure out how strong some of those active abilities are.
Aggressive action: An action that allows you to fire your gun in addition to any other effects it entails: e.g. loafers is good because it allows you to tag movement onto an aggressive action.
Recovery action: An action that allows you to either generate ammo or reload your shotgun: e.g. taunting hop is actually a recovery action, probably the only thing making it usable.
Extra action: An action that does not progress time: e.g. All wands are extra actions
Its own action: An action that does nothing other than its listed effects and progresses time: e.g grenades would be an extra action.
Extra: A reload action can load all ammo in a single turn, if you are in need of dps over time, holding onto enough spare ammo to reload your gun in one turn will give better dps than loading one shell at a time (2+ ammo shotguns only). This of course comes with the risk of leaving more enemies alive in the short term.

Speaking of missed opportunities, I would've found it to be a neat little detail if the player's color swapped with every victory. Doubly so since the end screen even says that the black king would be ruling again. Having the player be part of the cycle would've probably been way too much to program for something so insignificant and not even part of the gameplay, but seeing it happen would be incredibly satisfying.
It also provides the devs with a good excuse to have that Court of the Crimson King card Tyler mentioned.
Ehh it would just be a flag. Black=true/false then recolor the pixel art.

That was probably the most fun run I've ever seen of this game. I loved the insane movement perks you built up!
I kind of wonder what the "best build" for movement is in this game. I'm sure this comes incredibly close lol
a small thing: Shields won't activate if you're shooting an *adjacent* piece and have enough damage to instantly them, *not* if you have a 100% chance of killing them
the difference is that when you're shooting a piece 2 spaces away and have a 100% chance of killing them (enough damage, insanely small arc) the shields will still trigger. And if you're shooting an adjacent piece with a non-100% of killing (enough damage, insane arc/possibly blocking pieces/bodyguards card) they won't trigger.
They are a bit weird and misleading, always make sure you have a clear shot

A discovery I've found is if your shotgun is fully reloaded, every move you make gives you ammo. So sometimes a good strategy is to move without shooting to stock up ammo for future pieces.
You can regain more ammo quicker by moving a bunch with your gun loaded!
3:15 strafe is good for killing something that has you in check then you can move into that area

Becayse tyler likes to show failed runs as well as successes, I had no clue if that was going to win or not. I liked it.

If strafe misses one shot, you're dead
If he did that 100% the king would have died and he would have won. Firing wouldn't miss at that close range with just a 54 degree arc. Plus he had black mist for extra piece of mind if it were a question of chances
If you can pick the red book, then get it. It has a special interaction if you beat floor 12 while a bishop is still alive.
Hell, there is 2 special interactions. One for winning with a bullet still in the chamber, and one for winning without one.
It's intresting seeing all of the different unique upgrades

For the next run you should take the red book, and keep the bishop alive at the end for an extra challenge.
1: Scouting is actually fine. You might not get an extra turn from killing a knight, but you wouldn't have to deal with the bodyguard card for a while. 2: High Focus is OP. Especially when you get it twice. It becomes like a slightly nerfed scope, AND you deal extra damage. So, it's a super sniper. I don't really see any real downsides here.

You aren't the only one who feels curtsey is bad. If you knock a piece so that you end up in check in any way, you will lose a life, and sometimes it gets knocked back in a wierd direction
Ok so im sick, just threw up an hour ago and pretty delirious and thought this synergy was so beautiful i almost started crying.
I just noticed that the boss king's hand is wrong, and now I can't unsee it
If a pawn is between you and a rook, and you destroy the pawn, but the rook wasn't going to move yet do you die? I guess you maybe do because I don't think you can go in the path of pieces even when they aren't going to move yet. I feel like according to the rules of chess you shouldn't die though, because being in check doesn't kill you, being in a position where you will be taken the next turn kills you, and if the piece wasn't going to move the next turn you wouldn't have been killed then.
Yeah that's really confusing me. Do pieces get to move ignoring speed if they're threatening you or something?
Yes. If you are ever in a position where a piece can attack you at the end of your turn, you die

Turns out Strafe gets a lot better when you have multiple shells in your shotgun.
Havnt watched the whole video yet but Strafing is good because you can get close range damage without being close.
This game is the exact opposite of slay the spire, in slay the spire the game wants you to break it and things that seem like they shouldn’t work, work perfectly, in this game it doesn’t want you to break it and when something should work, it doesn’t

I really feel like the thing with hard mode removing a shell from the shotgun isnt too bad, since without elite gem you still have to take 2 turns to reload one shell if you run out of ammo, which isnt always too uncommon

It seems to me like black mist teleports you to the last spot you were in. For that time when the boss skipped black mist, if black mist was activated, it would've teleported you to a spot where the king can still get you.

To be honest I usually use strayf mode to lock on an enemy not to move while shooting

I could be wrong, but I don't think there is any way that knockback can put you into check. It can certainly be bad in other ways, like preventing a kill by pushing a piece out of range, but I don't think it can put you into check
It is possible to knock knights into check. I've seen it happen

I've got a question there is a card the caltrops card it says it slows down black reinforcement cards too so are there really rare cards that give you reinforcements or is that for the black bishop boss

It's impossible for knockback to send a piece into checking you that wasn't checking you before because of how normal pieces attack. Some cards may change that though.
21:05 u literally see if tower were knockbacked it would put him in check because of the strife movement. Also i feel like if something is blocking the knockback the piece may bounce in angle maybe (or just not move at all, we dunno yet until we see example in game) which may also lead to checks.
True that would be an anti-synergy, so with natural movement and strafe it should not put you into check. Unless a piece being behind it makes the piece move weird. So you are correct.
You mind answer me why don't reload a large amount of ammo? In hard mode with 1 shell in the gun you can move to get a shell and reload or move to reload this takes 2 turns and after that every time you move it will give you one shell. It'll save you some time it's understandable to not do it in normal because it takes 4 turns to make this work but hard it takes just 2.

The Haunting Top was definitely the wrong pick, +2 knights and slower enemies, plus higher firepower sometimes, would've been better most of the time.
