- As the Allies began to turn the tide during the Second World War, the Axis powers desperately sought for any means to salvage their war efforts and stem their losses. Technology, it seemed, would prove pivotal in determining the outcome of the war. Working together to share military secrets and intelligence, Imperial Japan would benefit greatly from their collaboration with Hitler's Germany. In particular, the Japanese took a great interest in German planes, rockets, submarines....and tanks. With their own armour proving insufficient to counter America's island hopping Sherman Tanks of the Pacific, Japanese officials were extremely impressed by the German Tiger Tank which had proved so efficient on the Eastern Front against the Red Army. Turning to their German comrades for help, Japan organized the purchase and mobilization of its own Tiger Tank - the first, they hoped, of many that would save the war for the Empire of the Rising Sun.

Let me buy the 60 ton tank to fight in swamps and on islands. Stellar idea.
Not only that but can get blasted by a Sherman without it even breaking a sweat.
It's not the weight of the Tiger that would've been the issue - the Tiger had excellent ground pressure distribution (actually even better than the Sherman) thanks to its wide tracks and the Tiger also had a built-in fording mode which allowed it to swim through rivers taller than the tank itself.
It's the complexity and fragility of the tank that would have posed the biggest problem. Those interleaving roadwheels would not last a month of use in places like the Philippines, and if the tank ever broke down then the crews would probably committ seppuku out of shame before they would ever manage to fix whatever the problem was especially since the supply lines in the Pacific (or lack thereof) would have meant that there would have barely been any spare parts lying around for them to use.
Chances are, if the Japanese would have used Tigers in a wider scale, they would have just used them less as actual tanks and more as semi-mobile pillboxes or bunkers.

Japan needed Heavy tanks for the Sovjet Union.
Japan actually managed to design and build their own Tiger tank, the Type 4 Chi-To tank. Unfortunately though, only two were built. At the end of World War II, the two tanks were dumped into Lake Hamana in Shizuoka Prefecture to avoid capture by Allied occupation forces. One was recovered by the US Army, but the other was left in the lake. In 2013, there were efforts to locate the remaining tank, but it was not found.
T0 be fair those were medium tanks at best, more in line with early Sherman designs then anything close to the Panzer V.
@@farts6499Thought the Chi-Ri was supposed to be the Tiger equivalent, if it weren't left hanging as prototype by only its main gun finished if I'm not mistaken.
@@TheGamingMotionTGM looks like the size of a Tiger, but American reports that captured and eventually scrapped the tank misinterpreted it as a heavy tank in it had 75 mm frontal armor. It was proposed that it would have a 75 mm autoloader or an 8.8 cm cannon, but reports on that aren’t clear cut on that. The Chi-Ri was never meant to be the Japanese Tiger. It was too costly so they tried the Chi-To variant and later went with the Chi-Nu instead of the Chi-To.

Unfortunately only 2 were built? How was that unfortunate? Are you wishing Japan would've been able to commit more war crimes?
Considering the logistical nightmare to transport the dang thing to Japan, let alone operate it in terrain it was never meant to be anywhere near(much less fight in), it would have been more detrimental to Japan than just continuing to use their own tanks.
So yeah, the idea was never going to pan out. It was an ambitious one, just not a good one.

Iwo Jima would’ve been their best bet but it would’ve been destroyed in the bombardment cuz there would’ve been no where to hide it

It makes sense as a hidden bunker of itself and can at least move somewhat. It would suprise the landing forces so much and probably cause fear in soldiers due to its fame and legend status. Americans love to exaggerate stuff. In conclusion it wouldnt move much so logistics would be simpler. Tiger will fall with the island
@@aegeanharrier6648 move where? Iwo Jima wasn’t friendly to tanks. The japs used artillery guns much better in bunks to the point where they ran low on ammo and or got overrun by the Allies.

I always wondered why they didn’t trade small arms like the MP40 for a smg or working out better LMGs for the Japanese
Because Japan was geographically isolated from its allies in Europe, and effectively surrounded by the hostile countries. USSR and China to the North, USA to the east, China, French Indo-China and British colonies in Asia to the west. Any plane, flying over these territories, or any ship sailing nearby would be destroyed.
@@markolysynchuk5264 but obviously they had meetings and ideas and projects were traded so swapping blue prints for things like the MP 40 which wouldn’t have been very labor or material intensive would have added them in the war

I'm guessing the Japanese wanted to examine the Tiger more closely, and figure out a way to make a budget Japanese Tiger with their existing infrastructure. Perhaps figuring out ways to decrease the weight or complexity.
The Japanese at that time are were fairly good when it came to learning about Western designs and mimicking some of their aspects. They did build an impressive Navy and Battleships like Yamato.
Building super heavy battleships instead of more carriers cost japan the war.
The strategic initiative was already lost at Coral see!
They even lost their precious navy in half a year against a rag tag force.

Biggest Japanese failure imo. 3 American carriers and zero battleships against 4 Japanese carriers and several battleships and every single Japanese carrier was destroyed along with over 300 planes. The Americans only lost one carrier and 144 planes.
Also fun fact, the battleship Yamato was very unsuccessful, having only three kills against ships throughout the entirety of the war, all of which were insignificant to the U.S Navy

also note, many Japanese Warships (especially Battleships) began their lives as British Warships and by WW2 were heavily modified to suit Japanese Naval Doctrine

I think that even if the Tiger had gotten to Japan, I doubt it would have made much difference in the Pacific. Most likely it would have been kept in Japan for the defense of the home islands in case of an Allied invasion, though said invasion never came to pass.
The Tiger was too heavy to transport over shores, island hopping is almost impossible with 60t of weight. They could've gotten the Panther instead or better the T-34, the Ha-Go tank is just a worse version of the early war BT-2
It was the incorrect tank for the terrains+local infrastructure+logistics capabilities Japan found itself fighting in. At best they might be able to keep them stocked (albeit fuel is a different story) if it was a mainland japan tank but at that point the war is lost anyways.
@@xenomorph9114ah yes call the Ha-Go worse yet crew who fought against it stated it was a very formidable vehicle when you compare it to there Stuart tanks.
Also do consider the Ha-Go was infantry support not a dedicated tank on tank vehicle.
They had 2 Mark III panzers one with a 75mm...this would have been adequate and miles ahead of the best Japanese tanks...but they were greedy to try to get a Tiger which Japan was incapable of building...so they got nothing

It would’ve been used as a mobile bunker at best. It would be extremely difficult for something like that to maneuver through jungles.

@diskopartizan0850 Manchuria would be better, however, Japan would not have the resources to maintain them. And the fact that the Soviets smashed what was left of Japanese forces in Manchuria, it wouldn’t have made a difference at all.
The Japanese really blew it when they didn't use a panzer. Mark three with a seventy five millimeter gun. Cheaper and easier...the 75 can take a sherman...and they already had 2 examples...greed for something better flunked adequate and miles ahead of what the Japanese were using

World of tanks explained the Japanese tiger, I have one, played 3000 games in it
Even if the imperial japanese army could buy like 50 tiger tanks, it wouldn't make much difference. The Tigers were only intimidating because of their veteran crews and the fact they were used against early medium tanks like the T-34/76 or Sherman.
Once proper tank destroyers like the M10, Firefly, SU-100, ISU-152... and upgunned T-34/85 came into play, the Tiger became just another tank in the war.
They should have instead copy the panzershreck or panzerfaust or the STG44

@@Star-The-Vaporeon Tiger H1: less stronger armour, has more weaker engine, the commander cupola was high, and the wheels was also not the best.
Tiger E: has more stronger armour, better engine, better commander cupola with a MG42 attachment, and better wheels and suspension
@@Star-The-Vaporeonthe most notable difference would be the Cupola. As you can see the H1 have a higher cupola on its turret comparing to the E's. This improvement on the E was very good cuz in the H1 even if you angle the tank right they still can destroy you by aiming that that tall cupola.

The Japanese Tiger was a converted mid production command Tiger (Sd.Kfz. 268). The rubber roadwheels are the only thing it shared with early production Tigers (H1)

There is another documentary about a German tank ace who later led the 101st tank battalion in Normandy, that stated, a majority of the tigers in the unit got destroyed by allied air power as they were travelling to the front, the remainder being destroyed in an allied ambush. Love the video!
It would not make much of a difference since it was not compatible with the tactics and doctrines used on the Pacific Theater where everything was about having a good naval,air and landing forces working together in sync and trying to assault or defend some heavily fortified positions on relatively small terrains. Without much space for its maneuvers the heavier tank types like the Tiger would have become relatively easy pray for air attacks and naval artillery that is why the Japanese relied on lighter and more mobile armored units like light/medium tanks and tankettes.
It really would have only been useful in the defense of the mainland and larger islands. But transporting the thing more inland would be a logistical nightmare because of its reliability issues. Lighter tanks like Panzer 3 and 4 would be a lot better with an upgraded gun similar to Firefly and EZ8 would be a more cost effective measure than Tiger or Panther. The biggest issue would still be the Sherman's legendary variety with napalm variants being incredibly deadly to entrenched holes so I would say they should be priority. Another method that could work would be the procurement of anti-tank weapons like the Panzershreck or Panzeraust in dedicated guerilla style Hunter-Killer units and would be more effective than the lunge mine as it doesn't kill its user.

It wasn't the Japanese emperor.. it was a submarine that visited France.. the Japanese have the biggest submarine during the war that can even carry 2 planes inside it.. a zero is actually flown in Paris as a testing

The Panzer Mark V would have been a better choice for the Japanese army. Faster, easier to produce.

The Panzer Mark V was very suited for defensive action. The longer range of its 75mm main gun would have allowed it to engage the M-4 Sherman, then move to avoid the tactical aircraft that would be called in.

@@jessicaregina1956 What? Britain fought in the Pacific, just not nearly to the same extent as the Americans.
Britain owned Singapore and Malaysia which were also invaded by Japan just after Pearl Harbor. They also sent support (albeit very small amounts) to Australia.
However British troops did fight quite a lot in Burma (now Myanmar) alongside India.

I don’t think the Tiger would’ve made any positive difference for the Japanese because the pacific campaign was a heavy tanks especially the Tigers worst nightmare. Might have made a positive impact in China though
Tanks are formidable weapons. Once they get blow to pieces, it has to be horrible to be inside. You get blow away as well.
Im surprised that they coose Tiger tank , I mean it would be way more useful to have lighter vehicles like Hetzer or Stug - cheaper , lighter , can face M4 without biger problems
not only that a hetzer or a stug would have fought a lot better in a jungle than a tiger
StuG III was more or less an assault gun and decent AT with the longer 75mm. Not necessarily what the Japanese wanted in a holdout position though. The Hetzer would've been a good choice but it wasn't even put into service until 1944 so not much of a battle record before the Normandy invasion and loss of shipping cabilities.

The zero was better in range compared with the 109. And the pacific was a huge war theather.
There real problem is the dispute between there navy & army.. even there bullets use different calibers

Most people forgot that Manchuria Front exist, and it was a suitable place for Sd. Kfz. 181 compared to Pacific Theater
Never mind that the Soviets didnt attack Manchuria until thr end of the war so deploying a Tiger there would be wasteful, rather they could deploy it on Iwo Jima or Okinawa would be more useful
If they deployed them in China, they would've just wasted more fuel and they would be encountering Late War Variants of Soviet Tanks with a little bit of the Lighter Vehicles being destroyed first

At 8:05 the clip portrays an Early Tiger, chassis number 250055, in Japanese markings (the end of the chassis number is marked on the front wall).
But at 4:50 we already heard the actual chassis number of the Tiger they purchased : 250455 , which is a Mid Tiger.
Would've been interesting to see Japanese Tigers deployed against Soviet forces in Manchuria.

They might use them for bunker defenses if they can get the tank transported. I doubt the Tiger would’ve done much in the Pacific since the tank has never fought in the jungle theater. It would’ve done better in Manchuria where there is more land than condensed chain of islands hopping.

@5:00. The Germans didn't rip off the Japanese per say. The Germans sold the Japanese a Tiger I package with the ammunition and everything else the Japanese's needed. If the Japanese purchased the tank only the price whould be lower.
Can you do the Midnight Raid on Nazaire Sub Pens by the SAS? It was by far one of the most daring and important commando operations of the war, knocking out the dry docks and sub pens that housed the German U-boat fleet in France :3
History is so random and cool
Had the Tiger actually reached the Pacific Theater, it would have given the American's a huge headache. Imagine it at Iwo Jima, several Tigers dug into the mountain side? Terrifying.
Sadly, it never would have come to pass as getting the things to the front lines would be near impossible.
Even if Japanese was able to (some how) manage to build Tigers, by 1943 the USN would basically take the Pacific Theater (Leyte Gulf). The Tiger would never have gotten to the defensive points even if they reached the island. Traveling over sand and volcanic ash just to start is different than Russian swamps or mud.
Honestly, Japan should have just studied the tank and made their own based off it. I dont count the Type 3, 4, and 5 medium tanks as they were more bigger badder versions of the Chi-ha. Or at the very least, manage to build turrets and 88mm guns based off the Tiger and use them as static AT bunkers.
tigers were way to heavy for that theater stugs however would of performed well being only 4 tons heavier then japans biggest tank depending on model and the 75 on them was good enough to smash a sherman
If tigers digs in then its an easy prey for aerial attacks.
A tiger on Iwo Jima or Okinawa would just get bombed by aircraft immediately.
I highly doubt they could hide one in a mountainside like AT guns just due to the sheer size.

@@BarryAllen__1A23 most Shermans used in the Pacific didn't have the 76mm gun, since the 75mm was more effective against the Japanese forces at the time. Besides, America was mostly too busy using the 76 against German forces anyway

I wonder why a Tiger and not a Panther? The Panther's armor was more than a match for the Sherman tanks that used the standard low velocity 75mm gun, and the Panther's high velocity 75mm gun was more than adequate to stop a Sherman. It would have probably been easier to transport and use in the Pacific Islands since it's much lighter than the Tiger, though the suspension issues may have been flaw that discounted it from adoption

Please take considering Japan also take other german military vehicles for studies such as the Bf109, Me262, and even U-Boats. They almost put a Me262 clone into service.

And the ME262 the first fighterjet far more superior to anything that allies had, if this had been mass produced by Germany and Japan then they would've gained air superiority and British airspace would've been open for bombing raids as the jets were too fast for the anti air defense
