Hi Lauren! I'm from Portugal and I'm 48. I always wanted to learn to play and I even bought a guitar 30 years ago but I never really had the time or patience to learn so I gave up. Two years ago I had some health issues and I had to stop working. I decided to start learning to play because it's good for the memory and so I bought a new guitar, some books to learn some theory and of course I watch YT videos. I must say you are my favourite and in a year I learned to play some songs, strumming and fingerstyle quiet well and I love it! So thank you for that and I will continue to follow your lessons because it really became an addiction 😁❤ 11:16
I only began my guitar journey 2 months ago. I've been dabbling with 3 different online instructors. Each have their strengths, but what I found most interesting is you're the only instructor so far that taught me something where immediately upon my doing it I was like, 'damn, I think I'm going to know how to play some day!'. Let's call it a 'Landslide Moment'.
Very good demo. I've been doing a simplified Travis picking pattern, but you've just shown me the fuller pattern that I've been hearing by pros like John Denver and Lindsey Buckingham. That more complex pattern adds sparkle and beauty to every chord. Super job. I've got lots of practice to do now. Thanks.
Awesome lesson, my wife started singing the dust in the wind as you were telling us about it. Guess I'll have to check that one out. Thanks so much. You do that so well. Love your patience with people.
Thank you so much Lauren! It's been one year since I decided to buy a nice guitar and take your course. Best decision of my life! I now enjoy learning more every single day. This year I'm dedicated to learning fingerstyle, so this was perfect timing. ✌️ & ❤
Gee I always thought finger picking was hard to play but you make look so easy that I’m now finger picking. Excellent Tutorial. Another Excellent Tutorial. 😊😊😊😊😊
Hola Lauren, muy buena lección,usted podría traducir está lección en español,porque he estado buscando estas lecciones para poder tocar la guitarra con los dedos, gracias
I love how happy you always look when you're playing. I have a question about travis picking. When using the G chord, do we not pick on the high E string? Thank you :)
Great lesson! Thank you. Can I ask why U use middle finger . Wouldn’t It be easier to use both with index finger . Or is it better to get it in my muscle memory as in this video for later patterns?
When you are first learning and playing slowly that might appear to make sense, but it’s easier to go quickly and not mess up when you have one finger assigned to each string. For more complex patterns the ring finger picks up the high e string too.
Great stuff, Lauren! Just curious, why do you move everything down on a 4 string chord instead of using the ring finger on the high E string and playing the second bass note with the index? Does it sound better?
I found the words and chords online for the song 'Music Speaks Louder Than Words'. Unfortunately, I couldn't recognize hardly any of the chords! 🥴 Any chance you could advise me where I might find alternative chords for the song? Peter Paul & Mary do a lovely cover of it and I'd really like to be able to practice it. Thanks.
Queston: On the D chord, you use the open 4th string (D) and the 3rd string, 3rd fret (A) as the bass notes. Why not use the open 5th string (A)? So you would be consistent with the bass strings used. I have been finger picking a long time and I am attempting to learn the Travis method.
Fabulous lesson as always and very much appreciated! I’ve been trying to do Travis picking for probably a year and my fingers just won’t do what they are told 😅. Me being me refuses to give up! Thank you 🙏
lol...well there are a few open mic nights and places like that around the place. My hopes of seeing you perform live evaporated like a cloud. ..lol ah well, we live in hope. @@LaurenBateman
I have been trying very hard to master the bass notes as demonstrated here. Unfortunately my thumb doesn't want to cooperate. I can't even imagine trying to add the G B E strings! 🤯
@@LaurenBateman -- Thanks. I have made some progress with my playing in general. My calluses don't hurt nearly as much as when I started. My chord changing has gotten better so now I can concentrate more on strumming and finger picking. Patience. 🥴
That is another technique you can use with them is pattern. I usually don't teach that first. For example, a song like dust in the wind uses the technqiue you are referring to.
@@LaurenBateman Thanks! I did go watch your tutorial on that song afterwards which is one of my favorites and why I want to learn the technique but I think it's too advanced for me at this point. However, it helped me understand what I'm hearing. Thanks so much for all your excellent videos!
This particular pattern was called "Cotton pickin," as it was used originally by Elizabeth Cotton. She was left handed but learned to play on a right hand guitar, so she played guitar with the bass strings at the bottom. You can hear her on TH-cam doing "Freight Train." Just a little bit of history for whiney purists.
Thank you so much for this comment. I’m still new to playing. Today I did a deep dive on Elizabeth Cotton and you are absolutely right. Her picking is insanely good. Born in the 1890s and started playing as a little girl on her brothers guitar. She bought her first guitar at 11yo. Played until the day she died and inspired a whole generation of amazing musicians. Thanks again. I would’ve never known. ❤
Blackbird is not a Travis picked song. I know this is the way that most play it, but that is not correct. Watch Paul McCartney play it. He using his index finger in a strumming pattern
I think you're missing the point. She's just trying to show a picking pattern to dress up your playing wherever you want to use it. Weather blackbird is 100 percent by the book or not doesn't matter
She never said Paul played it Travis style. Paul used a unique and individual way of sweeping his finger across the strings, but most others including myself use a Travis picking style to play black bird. Despite being left handed myself, I’m not Paul McCartney and therefore don’t strum or pick like him.

Hello Lauren, this is a great lesson but what's the difference between Mississippi John Hurt's picking style and Travis picking? Please explain!!
I don’t know the other one unfortunately.
OMG, this sounds amazing on my A1M.

Thanks for listening

Great stuff, Lauren! Just curious, why do you move everything down on a 4 string chord instead of using the ring finger on the high E string and playing the second bass note with the index? Does it sound better?
You could buy I like to keep the finger consistent.
Is it always 7 Beat's per chord? And who is your favourite TMNT? Mine is Leonardo
It's technically 4 beats per chord, but 7 individual notes played. But the pattern sometimes changes. Michaelangelo was my favorite.
I found the words and chords online for the song 'Music Speaks Louder Than Words'. Thank you for the recommendation. I do not have a chart for this yet.
I wonder what style Andy Griffith used? I loved when he played along with the Darlings, it almost looked like he was tickling the strings.
Thanks for watching!

Beacause I wanted to keep the Root note the bass note.
Well done
Thank you, cheers!

That's awesome! Keep it up :D
I'm glad to hear I'm not alone in having some challenges trying to learn this.
What model Taylor is that? Nice!
Thanks for watching! My Taylor is a 324ce Builders Edition.
So on the G chord in Travis picking you do not touch the fifth string?
Correct!
Lauren, you mentioned you are going to Ireland soon. Will you be performing while you are Ireland?
I will not be. Or at least I don't think I am. 😬😬😬

OK, just to make sure I am getting it, the thumb always plucks down but the fingers always pluck up?
Yep!
I have been trying very hard to master the bass notes as demonstrated here. Unfortunately my thumb doesn't want to cooperate. I can't even imagine trying to add the G B E strings! 🤯
