Videos of Spokane make me homesick, even though I was just there. Great video review of this lens and the focus system on the GX85. Having used the GX80 for the past few months, I'm pretty happy with the focus in video, remembering it's contrast only... at least you can see when the system is failing whereas the A6300 will just quit filming when it overheats.
Hey Max! Greetings from Cairo. I'm currently looking to buy my first professional set up and your videos have been very informative. Keep it up brother. Cheers!
Great vid mate - which lens do you use for the shots of you next to desk when talking to camera? (Well which focal length is what I’m wondering). Thanks
I love this lens on the G9. I also have the Sigma 16mm f1.4 and the two are sweet lenses, but this Leica 24 is a more useful width for me, and I love the close focus.
Great review, and fascinating lens - thanks for sharing Max! I actually just posted a 3-axis gimbal review of the GX85 combined with the PilotFly H2 and their new 12-60mm lens / Dual I.S. if you're interested to see how it performs. I've been noticing the GX85's clipping the highlights in my earlier vids, so I've been testing combinations of the "i.Dynamic" settings along with the in-camera highlight/ shadow curves quite a bit recently.
+Chris Prouse thanks I'll check it out! Shooting in natural PP I can pull the highlights about 9-10% and get some great recovery. Not as good as A6300 but better than what I remember from the GH4.
I am looking at primes mainly for G85 shooting video. I think the autofocus situation has significantly improved since you made this vid a couple years ago but I thought I noticed a fair bit of focus breathing with this lens when you were on that pink flower near the beginning? You didn’t comment on this aspect and wondering if you noticed l that issue during your tests?
Thanks bro! Im from the UK so link might not work but will give it a go. If you get time watch my Mocumentary on London Fashion Week starring the Silver Surfer 😇
Great review Max. I'd love to own this lens. I've rented the Leica 15mm 1.7 and 42.5mm 1.2 and absolutely loved them. Easily this nicest native micro four thirds lenses I've used. I can't justify the price for now though.
Great review, Max! Really appreciated it. Video looks stellar. I requested one from Panasonic PR and hoping they send it to give it a shot on vlogging. Interesting to hear about the auto-focusing hunting. Curious to compare it to my 7-14 f/4 and 12-35 f/2. Wish they'd added something like Canon's dual-pixel technology like Sony to provide better focusing than just contrast, but overall DFD is pretty solid. I just find it never does one perfect motion - seems to always go past slightly and come back a little bit. Autofocus is pretty important for vlogging, but the weight and quality of MFT makes it such a great option compared to the usual 70D/80D (plus 4K!).
Hi Max, I just had a thought, can you choose the macro autofocus setting, and have the camera find focus faster filming faces close by? - Thanks for the review. Yep Panasonic would be much better if they had a phase detect or dual other way to focus and track subjects.
+Don Floyd Dave is great with that and has a ton of experience with different small gimbals. Personally I'm using the new crane gimbal and loving it. Used it on two weddings so far and another one today as well as some other video shoots and it's fantastic with the A6300. amzn.to/2bPzMgJ
I don't know why you are complaining about the video autofocus (6:45) not being very good. Pros shooting video focus manually. Autofocus is not an issue.
Nice test, but can you do a little test autofocus in FullHD? I read in my instruction for G80, that autofocus in 4K is slower, than in FullHD. "When recording 4K, camera is trying to record with highly accurate focus at a reduced Auto Focus speed, and is not a malfunction"
What are the differences (optically, and bokeh between this lens and the Olympus 12mm f2.0 lens). I already know the weight and dimension differences. Thank you.
Check out the video on my channel that was shot using the GX85 and the panasonic 12mm 1.4. The perspective of this lens makes basic shots look more interesting than they really are. :)
Yes panasonic needs to fix the autofocus it sucks. But now i am more interested to compare this lens with some other 12mm like the olympus f2.0. That costs like half...
at this price point, you could sell your m4/3 camera and upgrade to a full frame camera (sony a7s ii) with a 24-70mm f2.8 (tamron VC, and use and adapter to sony) which would give you similar bokeh (and lowlight because full frame sensors do better in lowlight). if Panasonic had something like a 8mm f1.4, 12mm f1.4, 18mm f1.4, 25mm f1.4, 50mm f1.4 that all had Optical image stabilazation and where priced at $500 it would be a good deal. but $1300 for a lens that doesn't even have optical image stabilization is insane
Informative video but I have a few points: - This is a lensreview, not a camerabody review. Panasonic in 4K can do a lot better, true. However: how are you sure it is the AF system because I have reasons to suspect it isn't the AF system at all... - For landscape: you did not look at flaring. My 12-35 is a lens I love with that one weakness. If the Leica is clearly more resistant to it, it is quite a plus. - Video....this lens will not be depending on sales for video. MF and cinelenses etc are great for videographers. This lens will be mainly bought by stillsshooters. It is significantly better than the 12-35/40s because of the 2 stops you gain. More control over DOF. much better in low light and might be great for astrophotography.- Undoubtedly this lens will outresolve the zooms big time. Which means for the coming years with ever more usable HiRes mode it not only reduces shottime to prevent motion blur but also can get us every bit of sharpness out of those pixels. Not to mention Leica's rendering is appreciated by a lot.
dead right - great lens but Panasonic needs to up their game on vid autofocusing. I have the GH4 and the gm5 - both great bodies - but we need a better autofocus system. Still sticking with mft systems though and Panasonic in particular.
+Mel Feliciano it is "wide enough" but for that style he uses something wider at times. You would want to go for the 7-14 lens for those times when you want really wide or more zoomed in.
I chose the A6300 because of better lowlight, image quality, and mainly the autofocusing. This is mainly my gimbal camera. If I wasn't using it on a gimbal and it was my only camera I'd likely choose the G7 instead.
Severely overpriced. Dead on arrival! Can you compare this lens to the Sigma 16 1.4 E mount that costs 1/3 of the price on a Sony APS-C body like A6500?
Is the video quality of the gx85 in low-light much worse the the nx1, i believe the nx1 is the best dslr-style camera for video money can buy, unless you need raw!
+Don Floyd I do still think the NX1 is the best all around. That's why I still own and use 3 of them :) I just wish final cut supported h.265 already and there were some EF to NX powered adapters.
Would you prefer the pro-ress out of the 4.6k or the nx1 using an atomos if you were doing a documentary or indy-film! or in other words, which would be your C-cam if we left raw out of the topic?
Don, your statement strongly also depends on...user... because you are very focused, let's suggest to watch to Rome by bike, Yuri Palma. According to our analysis, and having said that Ytube make a compression, that video is best GH4 video so far and we think that only with a Red you can have something better ( IF you are a good user...)
I can't believe that nobody caught your error in the beginning about sensor size. Micro Four Thirds is one half the sensor size of full frame, not one quarter, for a 2x crop factor. APS-C sensors have a crop factor of 1.5. Please get your facts straight.
Manuel Jenkin if you plan to debate your point, please learn the facts first and site your sources. This will hopefully silence all you disbelievers once and for all. The Four Thirds sensor format used in MFT cameras is equivalent to a 2.0 crop factor when compared to a 35 mm film (full frame) camera. This means that the field of view of an MFT lens is the same as a full frame lens with twice the focal length. For example, a 50 mm lens on a MFT body would have a field of view equivalent to a 100 mm lens on a full frame camera. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Micro_Four_Thirds_system
Lens focal length equivalents, and crop factor are related to diagonal size. I was purely talking area. Micro four thirds is 1/4th the area of a full frame (just math.. 1/2*1/2, half the length, half the breadth)
dude I know this is 1 month ago but fullframe is 36x24mm which has an area of 864mm2 while a m43 sensor is 17.3x13mm which is 225mm2 hence the area of m43 sensor is almost 4x smaller than a fullframe sensor (3.84 to be exact). you are confused with area of the sensor and the crop factor.

I have the same problem with my plate. What you do is put one or two washers before screwing your plate, fixes the focus/aperture movement problem.

Too bad it doesn't have the dual IS

The Unexpected Journey It perform very well!
getting both lens and body in the post soon!

Nice review. BTW - I can't see the link to the gimbal in the description as promised. Can it support the GH4?
I think it's the Z1 Crane and it can hold even a 5D with max. payload of 1.2kg - although I've seen some tests with 1.8kg - and it sells for $650.

Great review Max
Thanks for watching and subbing!
Great review Max!
Thanks Paul!
haha checking out reviews for this lens and I see you're in Spokane. Me too bro! Do you still like this lens?
you can recommend a model gimbal for a mirrorless camera, eg for Sony A6300 + lens 10-18. Thank you.
Dave Dugdale is the youtube channel you want for that recommendation, Max is the also a fan of Dave Dugdale.

Hey Max, great videos man! Quick question. What mic do you use?
This for the outside shots amzn.to/2c8zEpQ and this for inside amzn.to/2bUgvwu on a boom plugged into a zoom h6
Thank you Max Great Review as always!.., What is the 3-axis gimbal that you are using?
+videoyfotosmx Thanks! amzn.to/2bPzMgJ

1) how many fps this video ?
2) what it is gimbal ?
Hi Max, I'm guessing you shot the footage at around 500sec shutter speed?
hey Max, was this shot on Gx85+12-35 ?
But you did not show us low light video capabilities of this lens.
Legend has it that if you're here early Max will reply to your comment...
+V Kaz Yes!
have stabilization?
How good is this lens on the Panasonic G7 camera?
+Choco Tech really good for the money.
Check out the video on my channel that was shot using the GX85 and the panasonic 12mm 1.4. The perspective of this lens makes basic shots look more interesting than they really are. :)
For videography which one do you recommend between sigma 18-35mm f1.8+metabones speedbooster and this lens?
+Bounyong Souksakhone if choose the SB and sigma combo no doubt. Much more versatile and you'll be slightly brighter as well.
What version software in your camera?
The lens is responsible for auto focus????
thanks:-) any info to the quick release plate on the gimbal. I hav this gimbal and gx80
I'm using this one amzn.to/2c59y8T
Max Yuryev Thank you very much!
Nice gx85. When ya gonna review that? =p
(I own one)
Nice opening music!
Thanks!
Yes panasonic needs to fix the autofocus it sucks. But now i am more interested to compare this lens with some other 12mm like the olympus f2.0. That costs like half...
This lens is a lot better. As it is a lot bigger too. Personally more interested in the Venus 7,5 mm F2 actually.
A comparison with the Olympus 12mm f:2.0 would have made much more sense given the double price range between the two and the size difference
I would have definitely done one If I had access to the 12mm F2.
If Panasonic step up their auto focus in video. This lens is certainly great for gimbal work in wedding.
+Kai Liu agreed!
at this price point, you could sell your m4/3 camera and upgrade to a full frame camera (sony a7s ii) with a 24-70mm f2.8 (tamron VC, and use and adapter to sony) which would give you similar bokeh (and lowlight because full frame sensors do better in lowlight).

What would you propose for a non expensive camera for 80% architecture-street photography plus landscape and 20% video?
It's so cool
Anyone use this lens for milky way shots?
dead right - great lens but Panasonic needs to up their game on vid autofocusing. I have the GH4 and the gm5 - both great bodies - but we need a better autofocus system. Still sticking with mft systems though and Panasonic in particular.
+Victor McAuley The GH5 better be good! :)
does this camera overheat?
The GX85 does not have 4k overheating issues that I am aware of.
azizul zulzaha am using gh4 ... No overheating
Good video review but you forgot one application, "Vlogs" Casey Neistat style. Is it wide enough for self portraits and Vlogs?
+Mel Feliciano it is "wide enough" but for that style he uses something wider at times. You would want to go for the 7-14 lens for those times when you want really wide or more zoomed in.
Love to have this lens but it's too expensive for my blood plus I'm out of room in my camera bag : (
Panasonic G7 or Sony a6300

This is way overpriced compared to Sigma 16 1.4 for E mount.
Problem is not with Panasonic it's with you. Focusing on the cute girl in the background was the right thing to do ;)
lol
Best explanation though for his girlfriend...

But like... its 1300 bucks, the *Sigma 18-35 takes a poop on this for half the price.*
