    It would be interesting to do a new review of this 12mm f/1.4 lens with the new Panasonic G9 II. It would be nice to know how it behaves with the new hybrid autofocus both in vlogging and all other situations. I know the 9mm is more suited for vlogging, but I always think it's too much angle and warps the images a bit. Personally, I don't like vlogs with lenses as wide angle as the 9mm. Maybe I'm just weird, haha.

    I think its a fantastic lens. The 12mm (24mm ff) is a sweet spot for video work, wide but not too wide.

    please do more of these.You are very good at clear explanation and keep the focus (pun intended) on the actual use of the lens.10 minutes not wasted. thanks

    That is some beauty stabilization in that GH5ii. Beauty of a lens too!!

      The stabilization is so good for vlogging :) Not that I am any good at it haha.

    Lumix G9 with the Leica 9mm f/1.7, Oly 12-40 2.8 pro and the Oly 40-150 2.8 pro. Still love the M43 system.

    I love my M43 system. Using a G9 with many different lenses. Especially love the Oly 40-150/2.8, the PL 8-18/2.8-4.0, the Sigma 56mm/1.4 or the Oly 8mm/1.8 fisheye.
    Coming from Canon FF one killer combo I love to use is the Canon EF 24mm/f1.4 L with a 0,71x speedbooster adapter. Turns this lens roughly into a ~17mm/f1.0 with working AFS. Holymoly, let's bokeh and separate... 😂💪👍

    GREAT tip for face detection. So many just assume Panny autofocus is trash but with the face tracking engaged, its decent!

    Just got back to MFT. Got myself the panasonic system. The G9 is really a fantastic camera and overlooked. Paired with a GX9 as well for a lighter system. the 15mm f1.7 is my go to lens. The 12mm f1.4, 42.5mm f1.2, Oly 75mm f1.8 are all super sharp lenses as well. Thinking of picking up the Oly 8mm fisheye pro lens.

    I have the 12mm 1.4 Pana-Leica and I love it’s character, love its clopse focus, love it’s speed. The 15mm is simply not wide enough, and I like the combination of the 16mm Sigma with the 12mm Leica. I shoot too much in the dark to ever think f1.7 is acceptable.

    Thanks Shane for an awesome overview on this lens.. I am really struggling to decide on this 12mm F1.4 'vs' the 15mm F1.7.. I will be doing a LOT of in the city video in Tokyo shortly and will be using the Pana 8-18mm as my main walk around (on a G95 camera), to suit the generally wide focal lengths I will use. However I am thinking about a lens for some decent night time city walk around Video.. The F1.4 looks very appealing for the low light capability... but that 15mm looks so good in terms of small size and weight on the selfie pole !!.. For night time street walk video, do you think the extra stop of light on the 1.4 is worth it ?

    • @GeekyNerdyTechy

      For travel, the 15mm would be my choice. It's smaller, lighter, and might make for a better travel lens.

    I am still in the m4/3 camp for both stills and video: G9ii & GH7, Voigtlander 17.5, 25, 29, and 42.5. PL42.5. Zooms: PL 10-25, 25-50, O12-40 & 40-150 Pro. I had the 12mm but sold it.

    I enjoy using primes but I prefer using zooms lenses. I have had the 10-25mm f1.7 for 2 months now and I am delighted with this lens. I love it.
    Compared to 12mm the extra 2 mm of wider aperture is a real bonus.

    Best part of the video.... the music! Good stuff man.
    At present, rocking the G9, ZV-E10 is only ok in my book and the ZV-1 is proving to be a sad camera at times. Sony just doesn't give you that same feeling. Maybe I'll get one of the EM-1 MK II cameras before long, nearly all my lenses are Olympus, they're just better lenses. Better colours, better sharpness, they are absolutely stellar. One day we'll get the perfect camera... one day!

    I have Gh5 and 12-60 Leica kit lens. I also have metabones and Canon 24-70 and Tokina 11-16, but I much prefer Panasonic Leica lens for the light weight and size for an enjoyable experience. Love your vlogs.

    Thanks for your review! Cameras: G80 and GX9. I have the P Leica 15 f1.7 and it is one of my favorites. Given that I recently got the P Leica 12-60 f2.8-4 (which is NOT a kit lens where I live) I cannot foresee myself getting the P Leica 12 f1.4, the P Leica is good enough for my needs. But thanks for the great video!

    I have both lenses and they are both great. I agree with you that if you need the width or larger aperture then the 12mm is a great choice, but if 15mm focal length and 1.7 aperture will suit you fine then the 15mm/f1.7 would be better value for money as well as being smaller and lighter. One other option I'd recommend if you need something wider than 15mm, but don't need autofocus, is the Laowa 10mm/f2.0, which is small, light, very good quality and excellent value for money. If I'm travelling light (say on holiday), I take the 10mm, 15mm and 14-140. But if size or weight isn't an issue then I love using the 12mm/1.4. 🙂

    Thanks for the review, Shane. Man, I wish that the L Mount lenses from my S5 / S1 cameras could be adapted to m43, as I hate having to buy lenses for two different systems (three, actually, because I still have a bunch of sony aps-c cameras). BTW: My favorite m43 camera I own is the Olympus E-M1 MK II because... it's the ONLY m43 camera I own. But I might get a GH5 II (or a GH6) and get some more canon glass and use it on the S1 / S5 and the m43 body.

    Really nice! Still shooting GX85. The 15mm, 25/1.4 & 35-100/2.8 are my fav lenses. This one looks great, just a bit too big/heavy though.

  • @colinthecameraguy

    I bought the pan/leica 15 a few years back. It’s great for photography but too small for Videography (the focus ring is tiny and hard to find) also the bayonet clip for the lens broke so now I use a screw in funnel type lens hood. I wasn’t prepared to pay the money for the 12mm (as I wasn’t sure I would use it enough) so I got a used Samyang 12mm f2.0 which is fine for daylight.

    Great vid, informative and well presented. I am toying with getting something wide and fast for MFT video. Have the 15 1.7, but likely not wide enough, and 12-60 too slow, hmm, I’ll keep thinking or maybe try the 12/1.4

    I have the first lens Sigma16mm F1.4 (in addition to the classic 25mm F1.7) and I am satisfied considering that it also has a great price, if I need the 12mm I have the Zuico Pro 7-14 F2.8 which is excellent (purchased used). Finally, for a mixed use I find the 12-60 F2.8-4 kit bundle excellent. This 12mm is too expensive for my pocket. My camera is G9.

    Great lense but sooo expensive. I use my leica 15 mm 1.7 for everything and i am very happy , it is much much cheaper but it has very good image quality. The difference of the 12.60 and the prime is mindblowing

  • @MikkoRantalainen

    When this lens is in AF mode, can you override the focus simply by twisting the focus ring at any time?

  • @fthprodphoto-video5357
    @fthprodphoto-video5357 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hello How is the 12mm 1.4 compared to the 10-25mm 1.7 in terms of global Image Quality ? (CA, distortion and character) I just purchased the 10-25mm and 25-50mm 1.7. second hand but I have a mixed feeling after a few photo shoots. While everyone seems to love these lenses for video (which I understand thanks to the constant 1.7 aperture) these lenses don’t seem to hold exposure’s correctly on my Panasonic G9 and GX9 even if I overexpose by 0.3-0.7 Il pictures are sometimes very dark (especially in the background) and sometimes well exposed but not as nice as my primes

    • @GeekyNerdyTechy
      @GeekyNerdyTechy  ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the 10-25mm has less chromatic aberration. I hardly ever see it where as on the 12mm it was always there especially up close on high contrast areas.

    • @fthprodphoto-video5357
      @fthprodphoto-video5357 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GeekyNerdyTechy ok thanks so you still have both lenses ? It would also be interesting to compare the IQ in terms of « character ». Would it be possible for you to make a comparison with different subjects at F1.4-2.2-2.8-4 ? That would be amazing if you have the time. Thanks a lot for your work

    • @TheBucsAnthem
      @TheBucsAnthem ปีที่แล้ว

      Primes will general always be sharper and with better contrasts as well. I had the 10-25 and I got rid of it. It's not that it's a bad lens at all, but that lens is really geared towards video production and definitely is not geared towards photography enthusiasts due it HUGE weight and size for M43 cameras. I also found that I was always wanting a little more reach when I was lugging that monster around if I wasn't shooting indoors as well; but it depends on your type of shooting as too. You do get better contrast and detail in the Leica primes, but you have to pixel peep for it honestly, but the 10-25mm still gives you that Leica look if that's what you're referring to in regards to image quality. If you bought the 10-25 thinking you were going to get all the qualities of all the Leica primes rolled into one, then you're sadly mistaken......that's just a TH-cam content creators total BS and myth. There is a reason why professional video creators only using primes and not zooms.

    It seems like people are overly concerned about the blurry background and it is over hyped. Vlogger video would be more interesting if the person is off to the side and the environment is the main point.
    I am using the G9 and 42.5 nokticon so far, looking at wider. The newer 9mm looks very interesting and possibly less warp, unfortunately no aperture ring.

    Shooting with « shallow depth of field" is not at all proof of "more professional photography", quite the contrary. It is rather an amateur internet meme.
    B2B clients (magazines, big brands, etc.) will ask you for photos with a high depth of field. And if you present them "internet style" or "instagram style" photos with a low depth of field (and a poor quality blur to boot) you will look like an amateur. I would never think of giving "internet style" photos to my B2B clients (who would refuse them anyway), especially in the field of cosmetic beauty (L'oréal, Redken, Schwartzkopf, Dessange, etc.).
    TH-cam and the internet are NOT a reflection of professional photography. They only reflect amateur photography and professional photography for amateur clients (B2C)

    • @GeekyNerdyTechy
      @GeekyNerdyTechy  หลายเดือนก่อน

      It is, if you require it for a job that wants it.

    • @photographiezautrement
      @photographiezautrement หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@GeekyNerdyTechy The problem is that many people, looking at these images and listening to these opinions about the supposed "professionalism" of shallow depth of field, end up really believing that "to look professional, you need a shallow depth of field", when it is totally false, especially in B2B. It is even the opposite.
      The problem is not to photograph with a low DOF (if you want to or if the client's request requires it), but to make BELIEVE that it is a mark of professionalism.
      I have been a professional photographer for over 20 years (and a photographer for over 50 years) and in my sector (Fashion and beauty cosmetics for magazines and brands, especially in hair cosmetics) shallow depth of field is absolutely prohibited (it is easy to understand when you do a hairdressing portrait; the hair must be sharp for the most part so that you can perfectly see the "hair material"). In addition I work with MF (hasselblad h5d-60 with very large 42x57 mm sensor) with Hassleblad H lenses of superlative quality at apertures like ƒ/11 or ƒ/16, sometimes more.
      So I insist but NO, a photo with low PDC is NOT a sign of professionalism. It can be IN SOME CASES, but you can't generalize it by saying "low PDC is more professional"
      (it's a bit the same as those who say that MFT or APSC are "not professional". Ridiculous. I could answer them with the same kind of arrogance that 24x36 is not a pro format because the sensor is tiny and the PDC huge (which is technically true, if I compare to my MF)
      PS: I Use MF (large sensor) MF with small sensor (Hasselblad X2D) and MFT (mainly for the quality of the lenses, much superior to the vast majority of 24x36 lenses - Except Leica, some Zeiss and Lumix S Pro)

    Great video. I’m watching at at Big Camera story here in Thailand. I’m not new to a real camera.
    I make videos when I teach yoga and for tutorials for social media and also bodybuilding reels on IG
    At the store they told me for videos that the Lumix G5 is the best video camera. But now I see Sony a seven mark for that just came out here and I’m wondering if it’s better to have full frame then three-quarter
    Right now I only shoot video and I will use mostly for that but as I begin to pick up clients and as my schedule progresses I will probably move into some photography to to make extra money
    Can I do that all with the new mix G5 mark two or will I outgrow it as I progress and wish I would’ve bought the new Sony from the beginning?
    My handshake and they said stabilization is better in the Lumix but most of my work will be on a tripod at least in the beginning and I may invest into a DJI gimbal at some point because even with stabilization it may not be enough for my hands or for that buttery smooth recording
    With all of this in mind can you please give me a recommendation as to which one you would choose if you had to do all over again
    Thank you kindly from Thailand and you have a new sub 🙏💪🧘
