I don't like snow

  • Dobby's first snow experience involves a lot of napping in the kitchen. He dutifully followed me around outdoors as I did my chores, but when I went back into the house and got the camera, he made it very clear that he was not going to "play in the snow" for the benefit of his TH-cam followers. He is making two noises in this video. His usual purring is how he communicates with his herd (me). When I can't see him and call "Dobby!", he answers with a purr. The clicking you can hear (twice) is a very soft version of his attack mode clicking. This is the noise you don't want to hear when you are trying to put his harness on, for instance. When it is very loud and accompanied by a backward move and stomp of his hind feet, you are in big trouble!

    Dobby is a 3rd generation USA bred capybara. His grandfather lived to be 18 years old in a harsher climate than this. In the wild, capybaras live to about 6 years old, in comparison. This pet and several others are associated with the ROUS Foundation for Veterinary Care and have already contributed to the information available for treatment of capybaras, both pets, and zoo residents. Dobby was destined to live with a small traveling carnival, but was purchased as a pet at the age of 3 weeks.

      Incorrect, Capybara lives 8-10 year in the wild.

      @@GeneralHeavy No they do not, if a capybara lives that long in the wild, they are one lucky rodent.

    Dobby makes a clicking noise like this when he is angry! He has a little bark, he squeaks like a mouse when I set down his milk bowl, but his most common noise is a soft churring, like a guinea pig, but quieter than a guinea pig, actually. When he is grazing in the yard, he "talks" constantly to me, as if we are a tiny herd of cows. He likes to know where I am.

      that doesn't make sense tho. tons of animals live in warm climates but can withstand snow and ice. Capys basically have the feet of ducks and rats combined.

      It turns out the young ones are especially susceptible to frostbite. I never let Dobby stay out in the snow or on freezing ground for long. As he matured, he came indoors on his own or found his way to the barn to hang out with the hens.

    Dobby has a heated barn and access to the house all day long. Why did he choose to be out in the snow? He just followed me outside! He likes to visit his chicken and duck friends and he knew that is where I was going. He wasn't really expecting snow.

    The number 1 breeder in the USA is in Arkansas...where it snows. Zoos exhibit them worldwide. If care is taken, they are extremely cold hardy. When it is cold outside, Dobby comes into the lodge and drinks hot chocolate (with marshmallows) with the rest of us. We don't allow him to bring his snowboard inside, however.

In our vets office I once experienced someone who just wanted one and didn´t educate themself before - then they were completely overwhelmed and wanted to give it away again, that was really sad for the animal.

    Capybaras range south into Argentina, as well. The most successful US breeder has been raising capybaras in Arkansas for over 20 years, hardly a tropical climate. Your point is well taken however, as Dobby nearly died of pneumonia (probably due to air cargo conditions) when he was only 3 weeks old, and I do know of another young capybara in Canada who eventually died of an infected foot, from a case of frostbite last winter. Dobby always has access to indoors (my house) during cold weather.

  • @hippopotatomus
    @hippopotatomus  12 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    @Diuxid Sort of. Dobby is too grubby to come into the house beyond the kitchen area we have fenced off for him. Garibaldi ROUS is quite dignified and has the run of his house. There are a couple more young ones currently being raised completely indoors, but that is not recommended. They need to swim and they need to graze for a good part of the day.

    @adibson Capybaras have little or no odor and are very quiet but they are not easy to care for. They need to swim and graze and need protection from winter cold. Check out the Capybara Madness website, Gianthamster, for more information. Make sure you have a veterinarian who can help you care for one. They are more delicate than they look.

    @poosaypirate Dobby is hardly an ideal house pet, though he thinks he is! He is gentle and affectionate but wary of strangers- which means almost anyone but me. Capybaras are legal in many areas, but it is important to check your national, state, county, and city laws and ordinances. Even local homeowner's associations can have rules regarding exotic pets. Capybaras need to swim and they need to graze. They need a securely fenced yard and shelter from the cold.
