  • Hey guys! After nearly 2 years, I decided to give Southern Airways Express another try. My previous experience on them was from BWI to MGW and if there was something that could go wrong, it went wrong. Because of that, I chose other carriers over Southern when the chances came up until I finally decided maybe they're worth another try. Did they redeem themselves this time? I say yes, 95% of it. The only blunder that blares out to me is this: If you noticed on the flight boards at PIT, there was another DUJ flight leaving a few hours later. THAT flight would then go on to BWI with me aboard. I noticed that flight in the schedule a few days beforehand and pleaded with Southern to switch me onto it, and to no avail. Whoever I spoke to made up so many lies telling me it doesn't exist to they're not able to switch me to it to the system isn't letting them switch me to it and etc. etc. etc. Like seriously? Anyway, what came out of the whole thing was I just got a private prop ride and a 3 hour layover in the middle of nowhere :D So a bit of bad and good, but mostly good. I didn't mind waiting as I got some more work done in a comfy lounge inside DuBois Regional Airport. If you live in a rural area with a smaller airport that is served by an Essential Air Service carrier, I definitely would recommend flying them, especially if you need to connect, as they're usually very cheap and it's worth it. Hope you guys enjoy!

The first time I made that trip was in a DeHaviland Twin Otter on Allegheny Commuter 1981. I had my aircraft mechanic at the restaurant in DUJ airport terminal for a position at the Youngstown Ohio maintenance base working the Shorts SD3-30 aircraft. Now I manage the guys that inspect the big jets with the purple tails in Memphis Tn.

So, a Southern Airways Cessna Caravan loses power just after takeoff at Dulles International Airport. It’s safe landing on a highway, was just as impressive as the “miracle on the Hudson” some 15 years ago. Kudos to the pilots. I am sure Captain Sullenberger is impressed.
Unfortunately that emergency landing also shows the “Achilles Heel” of single engine aircraft. In commercial aviation, engine failures are more common than pilots becoming incapacitated. And yet, Southern Airways is planning to use a plane with two pilots, but only one engine here at Williamsport.
And it is not like Southern Airways doesn’t have twin engine planes in its fleet. They do. Perhaps if they offered fewer flights, but with more capacity, they could use them at Williamsport.
Finally, 20 years ago or so, scheduled commercial flights at the Williamsport airport used Beech 90 King Air turbo-props It was a small twin engined plane and carried 9 passengers or so. And the Beech 90 King Air is still being produced.

The only small plane I was ever on was a 15-20 passenger turbo prop. It was a Cochise Airlines direct flight from Phoenix to LAX with stops in Yuma AZ and El Centro CA. I deplaned in El Centro. That was in 1979.

Hey at the end of your flights that happen in the future after landing and taxiing to the gate ask the pilot/flight attendant to see if you can go to the cockpit. I just went on vacation and I asked the pilot at the end of the flight and they let me in.

I didn't realize the Airport served flights to such local destinations, that's pretty cool. I guess some of the planes I see when I'm out in the country during the weekends could be some of these planes. I always assumed they were from the local airport up there.
That Co-Pilot looked like he's pretty hot. 👍

Southern moved their east coast hub from BWI to Dulles at the end of June. I betcha down the road they’re gonna reconsider moving it back to BWI cause Southern passengers can connect to Southwest flights at BWI for better fares than connecting to United at Dulles.

Yesterday I flew Southwest Airlines from Savannah to Nashville to Denver to Omaha, I only had a 40 minute layover in Nashville and I had to go from gate D5 to gate C25 and made it in time for boarding so did my luggage, many people yesterday were rebooked and rerouted due to fallout from the Chicago storms which resulted in a ground stop at O'Hare and Midway

FOR U AVGeeks out there, flew Southern airways from Pgh to Dulles. When we stopped in Hagerstown the captain went outside the terminal for a cig. Since I'm 1 of the few people who still smoke, unfortunately, I went out to have a cig of my own & see if I could pick his brains for a min. He was more than happy to talk shop while we both enjoyed our cancer sticks, ha. He said he hates flyin' the Cessna 208. "It's a pig" were his exact words. He said it has no performance & struggles the entire way. He said "we don't cruise at 175mph at 7500 ft b/c we want to, but if we have more than just a few passengers that's the best we can do," ha. So then I asked him why he was flyin' for SA, b/c he did look a bit older. He said b/c he flew 757s/767s for American Airlines but they have a mandatory retirement age & he wanted to keep flyin'. I also asked him whether he preferred Boeing over Airbus. He said, & I quote, "as a passenger I'd rather fly ON an Airbus, but as a pilot he'd absolutely rather PILOT a Boeing. Thought that was pretty interesting.

Does this bring back memories lol. I flew turbo props on the exact same route for Crown Airways. Dubois was our main hub. We were there when the "new" now old terminal was built. We used to park over at the north 40 at Pitt and everyone was bused over to the new terminal. It was the exact same set up. EAS. Lot's of stick and rudder flying. One thing you could count on about Dubois was a lot of bad and windy weather. Especially in winter. Fall was beautiful. We flew Twin Otters. Shorts. Beech 1900"s. Best group of people I ever worked with. Thank You for this video!
