Out of the apparent chaos comes beauty. I love a crusty looking vintage Danelectro '59. Excellent band thanks to two thirds of The Dirty Three - Jim White has played with her for years. ,She is always worth listening to whoever is backing her. 🔥🔥🔥❤️❤️
All the incarnations of Cat Power are great, but this trio is best Mick Turner sounds wonderful on the record, but what Marc does for these songs is perfect Wish he'd left us more
I took a Greyhound bus from NYC down to Athens to get to see her. One of my favorite memories EVER. I was sick as a dog, chugging nyquil, and had to catch the bus home at like 5 am next morning. Worth everything :)
@@billionairesShouldNotExist I did one of those trips for Angel Olsen and I'm so glad I did! I was a few years late for Cat Power but what you said was so relatable!
It would have been nice if someone will make a song list with the time sheet. Being a huge fan of Cat Power from the start (via John Peel), I'm still not able to recognize all songs
I saw her the same year but for some reason she had a Piano and she was quite drunk the whole time (I don’t judge. I adore Chan Marshall). My partner and I just stood and hold hands and sometimes we cried. They were a lot of people crying. It’s the best show I’ve ever seen. I’ll never forget it. Could I possibly be wrong about the year that I saw her?? Could it possibly have been for the covers record tour?? I’m so confused. She played old songs and cover songs and songs that had not been released yet and songs that were just unreleased. She even played free Bird. It was beautiful. Jesus Christ! He turns down is jaw-dropping. Also crossbones style.
Wow.. that show sounds fantastic! I have a similar experience.. as your show sounds a lot like how she played her shows on the You Are Free tour too.. she kept it really loose & well.. free : ) This would have been many many years after '98 but it seems like she has a distinct gigging style all her own, or @ least, one that worked for her for a long time over the years. I imagine her approach is much much different nowadays. I saw her @ the First Unitarian Church in Philly for that You Are Free tour, and still, to this day, it was one of the most breathtaking shows I've ever witnessed. People were definitely not used to it @ all, the fact that her set was free-flowing & especially her style of getting kind of warmed up thru almost the first quarter of the set, while drinking a bit to help get herself there.. but I'll tell ya.. once Chan gets warmed up to a room & can kind of ignore that there are people there & really get into her zone that way.. she really can totally command that room & take everyone on such an emotional journey. It was just.. profound to the nth
And yes, it does sound like perhaps it was the Covers record era tour that you may have seen her during : ) Even when I saw her all that time later, she played just how you described, like a long string of songs @ the piano.. like hearing the most beautiful long medley ever.. and it was mostly her originals but she was mixing in covers too & like.. weaving in & out of things in such a lovely way. So incredible..
Really loved the encoding that you did. So much better than the dvd version i have here. It would be really cool if you did it with the best cat power gig ever, Bottom of the hill - 98.
Is the fuzzy haired fellow on guitar the recently departed Coleman Lewis? And thanks for uploading this. While it may be difficult to watch Chan struggling through some performances, those struggles helped shape the continually evolving artist she is.
Metal Heart Dreams by Fleetwood Mac (Cover) He Turns Down Naked, If I Want To American Flag Werewolf Cross Bones Style The Leopard and the Lamb Colors and the Kids
Not to be that guy, but the silvertone she’s playing has one pickup, thus a 1448. What’s interesting is that it has a whammy bar, which I’ve never seen on a 1448. If I could find one with a whammy bar, I’d buy it so hard.
What is it with Jim White's habit of walking away from his drum kit during the songs? I've seen footage of him doing this pretty frequently. Is he also handling the sound board at these gigs?
Peyote Trash Thanks! I love that song and I love that version too, but I hadn't realised it was the same song :S (I'm not a native english speaker so it's not strange I didn't figured out the lyrics)
Aha its ok, I'm not either. I only noticed it 1 week ago, but i've been listenning to this show for like 6 months at least, it's kinda hard to understand the lyrics since she's completly drunk
Something sounds off. It's either the guitar is slightly out of tune or the drummer is off a bit. That's what it sounds like to my ears. Is the singer on drugs? She's all like "what's the next song?". It seems like there's a lot of starting and stopping. It just sounds like they are at band practice working out songs. That's what it sounds like.
I dunno … it's pretty embarrassing for Ms. Marshall don't you think? Have you never been to a party say, and had one too many drinks? (or in this case maybe one too many tabs of acid ;)). Imagine if the whole thing got recorded and subsequently posted publicly by a stranger for the whole world to see? Just my opinion, but I would remove it or at least acknowledge that she was in pretty bad shape at the time of this so-called "performance". The other band members could have canceled the show too. So I guess they're mostly to blame.
I can only agree with that. Very nicely put in fact. I've tried to say the same thing in different ways, but I like the way you've put it. But I don't see much in the way of beauty in this particular video. She's more than just drunk ... she's "spaced out". Which is probably why (I don't know his name) the younger band member keeps checking her eyes. I don't know much about her social history. Mostly rumors and not really any of my business. One thing is clear though; she's suffered from some kind of psychological disorder for the better part of her life. The drinking and the drugs are merely symptoms, not causes... I mean, how many druggies/drunks have you met that have been anywhere near as productive as she was (is)? I've *have* seen what you're describing in other videos, and as much as it hurts me to see her suffer, I see those as works of "human art" in the way you described. Raw, naked, ugly and beautiful at the same time. Glastonbury, last year, was a particularly poignant example. Was that the first time she changed the lyrics of Metal Heart? Anyway, as I say, I see none of that in this video. That's not Chan on the stage. That's a spaced out young child pretending to be Chan, and failing miserably IMHO. You could always ask her permission to post it. She may respond and prove me wrong. - FL
Sounds like you've put a lot of thought into how this affects you, *and only you*. While it's true that Ms. Marshall is a public figure I doubt she would have chosen to be one if given a choice. If you ask yourself, and if in all honesty you are certain that Ms. Marshall would choose to have that footage on public display then you can certainly go ahead and post it with a clear conscience. I couldn't and wouldn't. Why? because I don't know what she feels about it. After all, you're uploading and displaying an ugly event in *somebody else's* life for anybody to have a look at and then jump to their own conclusions, not all of them flattering. I wouldn't do that to someone I respect and admire. That's just out of the question.
***** BTW. Frank Lyalone is a sobriquet. Name's Alan Carre and this I guess is is my "artistic" channel. You'll see Alan Carre making comments on here, not coincidentally we look the same! The other channel is mainly about computer programming. Although I do have a few tutorials on things like image/video editing etc. So far nobody has noticed the pun in Frank Lyalone (or maybe it's so obvious they haven't bothered!). The planned reply was to be that it's Italian and the 'e' is not silent!
guadalupe rosales The answer to that question is indicated in the previous comment. Feel free to read it at your leisure. As to your 2nd inquiry, or suggestion rather: No I do not know Ms. Marshall personally. I am only aware of her through her work (which is quite outstanding in my opinion). She does have a Facebook account so you might be able to get in touch with her through that service. Although, judging by what I've seen there, she seems to be extremely busy and probably doesn't read messages from unknown persons. Sorry I couldn't be of more help. - A

I think she is playing a Silvertone 1449
That guitar is clearly not twelve-string

She played the Silverstone because she idolized Dex Romweber of flat duo jets.

Something sounds off. It's either the guitar is slightly out of tune or the drummer is off a bit. That's what it sounds like to my ears. Is the singer on drugs?
