    It’s all my fault ;)
This is an old gospel song written by blind Willie Johnson in 1927. Zeppelin made it their own though. It’s a song of redemption. One of my faves! Love that start and stop flow. Plus the drums sound like dive bombers in the studio.

John Paul Jones, the bass player, was using an 8-String Alembic Bass on this track. If you don't know, that means it's a 4 string bass that has another string an octave higher per string, so it fills a ton of space. He is covering a lot of space normally taken up by the guitar. He's dope. Check out The Lemon Song by Led Zeppelin if you haven't. JPJ gives a blues lesson on that song.

I'd love for someone to do reactions to the old mississippi blues songs that either inspired or were covered by rock musicians. When The Levee Breaks by Memphis Minnie, Nobody's Fault But Mine by Blind Willie Johnson, Gravel Road Blues or The Girl I Love Got Long Wavy Hair (same lyrics) by Mississippi Fred McDowell and Sleepy John Estes respectively. Son House, Robert Johnson, Blind Willie McTell, Scrapper Blackwell, and many others, too many to list. There's a lot of beauty and artistry worth exploring there. I know this is a little tangential but if you were interested, something like that would definitely be worth looking into.

    Lyrics
    Oh, nobody's fault but mine
    Nobody's fault but mine
Trying to save my soul tonight
Oh, it's nobody's fault but mine
The devil he told me to roll
The devil he told me to roll
How to roll the log tonight
    Nobody's fault but mine
Brother he showed me the gong?
Brother he showed me the ding dong ding dong
How to keep that gong alive
Oh, it's nobody's fault but mine
Got a monkey on my back
Got a mo, mo, mo, mo, monkey on my back, back, back, back
    Gonna change my ways tonight
    Nobody's fault but mine
I will get down rollin' tonight
    No-no-no-no-no-no-nobody's fault.
I interpret as a battle with drugs. In end he says has a monkey on his back. Old term foe opiates or addiction.

This is loosely based on a Blind Willie Johnson song. Except for the chorus, the lyrics are different, and the music has nothing to do with the original. Go listen for yourself. Nevertheless, lots of people getting butthurt over a controversy that doesn't exist. Johnson was the first to record the song, Nobody's Fault But Mine, but like most blues songs, it had been around for a while with other musicians playing it as is, modifying it, or creating derivatives. Zep's song is as original as they come. If Zep had titled the song differently and not used the titular phrase, no one would be the wiser.

All about Jimmy Page's heroin use during this album recording. "Gong" is an old term for opium...like in Cab Callaway's "Minnie the Moocher"....."he took her down to chinatown and showed her how to kick the gong around". "Got a monkey on my back" is a term for a drug addiction....something you can't really control. Not sure about "roll" but probably something with how you roll a ball of opium to put it in the pipe. I guess it's Plant telling Page that his heroin usage was getting out of control, and also Bonham's drinking
