Talking about the 5.45 x 39…. I didn’t realize how corrosive the spam can ammo was…. Until I had to kick the bolt open on my Romanian SAR-2 ( the gas block had rusted and was holding the gas piston- 1 week after a gun range day) to fight off a home invasion .
Thank you for the left handed fishing reel comment Mark! I couldn't agree more. My dad and oldest brother are lefties so i always figured I just prefered the left handed reel because that's what i first used. Good explanation and reasoning for controlling the fishing rod with your dominate hand and manipulating the reel with your left
Love my Arsenal SAM7R! I find it funny that people who complain about perfect safety actuation on a rifle are the same people that are against having a safety on their pistols. It doesn’t make sense, lol.
I love my Romanian Wasr-10/63. 1974 trunion and I scooped up a used Romanian dong furniture set with a bunch of carvings or “trench art” in the stock. It looks awesome now especially with a cheese grater upper handguard. I just wish ammo was cheaper 😂 it definitely slings the brass into the upper atmosphere but it runs. I’ve thought about doing an alpha build with it but it looks awesome with wood and steel too. Good video
Its truly nuts ..I think it was 2004 when I bought a mak90 and poly tech at the same pawn shop at the same time for 700$ somthing ..was under definitely $800 I remember w after tax and some ammo lol.. Those were great times
I was all set to watch a show on Alaska! Clicked start, and it was a pouting snowflake fight. Once that ended and everyone reverted to being professional, great show
Just bought a jts ak12 Sunday and have been looking at 7.62x54r ak kits this morning. It's like you guys read my mind whenever I'm thinking of guns, gear, or ammo :D
Ken Burns took 700 minutes to comprehensively cover the entire US Civil War. I think the Vortex dudes could do 3500 mins just on the guns of the US Civil War.
You want to talk crazy prices, Romanian PSL-54C, 12-15 years ago, $699 with optic, case, and 2 10 round magazines. Just the base rifle now over $1200 easily. Granted, any over like 170gr will apparently break the recievers.
I loved the Rocky 4 reference. Ivan Drako is being methodically trained and monitored by scientists and weird 1980s looking machinery that is measuring his strength with every pump. Meanwhile, Rocky is out running the countryside, sawing wood, helping a horse drawn carriage out of the snow 😂. It’s perfect.
Need to clear up a few misconceptions, one big one was the "AK is a cheap rifle, if something is wrong with it they would just throw it away" along with "the reason it was stamped was so they could make them cheap and mass produce them" These are both connected, AK rifles were designed to be mass produced yes, but not cheap in quality, never. The key phrase to keep in mind here is "cost effective" and replacing rifles isn't cost effective. The goal is to get as much value for money spent as possible. Cost effectiveness is the cornerstone of Russian design, make something as durable as possible, for the minimal cost possible, the trick is finding that balance. From the Russian mindset yes they are frugal, but quality and durability is a cost saving feature in of itself. Durable rifles don't need to be replaced and in-fact save the state money. So yes a soldier may "throw away" a broken AK a get a replacement rifle, but you're going to throw it to a military armorer who is going to fix whatever is wrong, swap out trunnions, push out barrel pins etc. then put that same rifle back into circulation, a AK armorer is more like a blacksmith than what we are used to with AR. The other misconception about stamping is it's purely done as a cost saving measure, as if it was a cheaper option and that was the rational, in reality one of the biggest factors and considerations that went into moving to more stamped firearms was weight savings. Today in the world of CNC aluminum and polymers we forget that back in the 1940s stamping was one of the most high tech solutions to making a lightweight rifle, being lightweight and portable were the main priorities of Kalashnikovs design, having a rifle that acted as a rifle / submachine gun, had 30 round capacity and still weighed less than most rifles and sub guns was a really really big deal for the time, (M1 garand 9.1lbs, Thomson nearly 10lbs, AK-47 weight 7lbs) we just tend to overlook that fact because the AR was another further leap in weight saving technology.
The AK 7.62 x 39 is simple with a small number of big parts. No detents or tiny springs to go flying into oblivion. A cold weather recommendation is to use it with no lube whatsoever. I prefer ARs, but If I had to go to a remote location (warm or cold) for years without resupply, I’d pick an AK over an AR for its simplicity, proven reliability, and 30-cal stopping power.
27:11 generally speaking you're stronger with your off hand but can do more precise movements with the primary hand. Like gripping a board in one hand and swinging a hammer with the other.
It was the sound of the bolt that got me me all hot and bothered. I was watching a klayco video and that sound made me have to have one. Now i have a few and still want a SAM7R. I got into at the wrong time also. Tula and wolf as 33cpr and climbing. It hurts my heat to pat $500+ for a case of x39 but i keep doing it.
Ok...5.45 ammo, aside from 7n6, is not corrosive. That would include Barnaul (Monarch, Brown Bear, Silver Bear included), all flavors of Wolf, Tula, and other Russia-produced ammo. The 7n6 is great ammo, just requires cleaning, but as most AKs are chrome-lined, it's not the end of the world if you don't clean it immediately after firing. Run a bore snake soaked with Hoppe's #9 and clean the gas tube and piston and you're good. A quick wipe down is also recommended.
New production 5.45x39 ammo can be purchased right now for around 56 cents per round, not the greatest deal, but better than 80 cents per round like the guy stated in this video. Russian surplus 7N6 5.45 is available for around 60 cents per round right now as well if bought in bulk (1,000+ rounds) so not as bad as it was. 7.62x39 isn’t cheap anymore either since the Russian ammo ban caused by the Ukraine situation that kicked off in ‘22
They are incredibly capable and robust weapons. Their may or may not be a few around here close LOL.........I am fond of the pre-ban Hungarian rifles, all the Russian stuff, the WASR and love the Bulgarian milled guns. The new Zastava's are great too (so far) mine have had no metallurgical issues. I grew up shooting the Chinese, polytech's and then the Mak-90. I will be the first to say the money they fetch now is way less tempting to dish out to own the classics however. For a milled 100% straight gun around 100-1200 was pushing top dollar, and when it went beyond that the new shooter really missed out. It's hard not to just buy a BCM or Colt ect. and slap a 1000$ LVPO on it and have a "go to war" 1 minute gun with the right ammo.......for all that investment you will get an iron sighted used classic AK from the ban list. There are still 800$ WASR's out there sure- but that was a TOP's 500$ gun from back in the day.....for the die hard who is already invested, yes to all of it. I am an AK nut and I am VERY jealous of that 308 VEPR lol.........I let so many slip by. I guess I am saying- although not as appealing to own as 10 years ago, it is still a great choice if you can afford it. The market has flip-flopped. Mil-spec + reliable AR's are 800-1000$ and all the AK's we grew up on are pushing 3000$..........crazy. It has turned from a prepper's gun to a collectors gun.
We don’t have access to the AK up here in the great white North. However, there IS an SKS behind every blade of grass. 😮 haven’t priced ammo recently, but I think the last two crates I bought were closer to .10cdn per round.
@@austinbaker8175 you may or may not have a point. But I don’t think Jim in all his ak expertise, ever put in as much work on the platform for one gun, as it took for the ak-50. Anyway, my comment was more about the part when they were naming all the different calibers of the ak platform
“I don’t think you’d find anybody in a serious situation that would rather have one of these than an AR” That’s where you’re wrong lol. The main reason I got in to AKs years ago was seeing a variety of ARs across the spectrum of prices fail. Buy an import AK and feed it decent ammo that you’ve tested out and you’re done and likely will never experience a catastrophic bolt failure or have to change out the barrel after 15,000 rounds give or take, unlike the AR. 7.62x39 isn’t as high pressure as 5.56, leading to substantially better barrel life. And AK bolts aren’t expected to shear like AR’s.
My best friend has a AK-12 but he can only get 10 round mags ,but my AR-12 I've got 5 1:50:15 ,20 round mags, that's why I stay with the AR set up, & I'm going to get me a AR-10 in 308 chambering
-Mechanically the AK and STG only share being gas operated. -Ergonomically theyre similar, but no different than the Thompson. -Doctrinally the AK was treated as a submachinegun to the SKS rifle for a few years until they realized that was pointless and they got AK production up and running.
I gotta say, I love the AR and I think i can it okay, but good absolute golly do I love the AK. I think it's a very jack of all trades master of none kind of rifle and that fits me personally very well. Good at a lot but great at nothing
I wish you would have talked about optics for AK's. I.E. height sight, mounting red dots, LPVO's, etc.. I like AK's but don't have one because the optic mounting issues and the recent cost spike.
RPK would be the equivalent to the SAW today or the BAR from WW2. RPK is magazine fed with the same caliber as the rifleman. Saw can be belt fed or magazine. M240 uses 7.62 NATO which is a step up in caliber, belt fed only. M240 is not a squad weapon system. It also requires 2 to operate properly.
The RPK equates to the M27 IAR. Also _we_ might not use the 240 like a squad weapon but other militaries do. The British dont even bother with the Minimi, they issue an MAG at the squad level just like we used to issue M60s.
The main reason I don't get the AK thing is there's no extended magazines 30 rounds+ & they don't have binary or bump stock parts for it but, they do have stuff like for the AR style rifels
I’m glad these don’t just last 10 minutes. I learn so much all the time. Plus, I bought Vortex products strictly due to these talks and intend to buy more.
Is it 1989? Talking about not cleaning a ak? That myths only been busted couple decades ago lol ..just buy a 556 ak if you want the 74 style and round its close enough and cheaper at this .point
Jim, on an AR you can’t put the safety on safe until it’s charged. So saying the AR can be on safe, rack a round into the chamber and it’s already on safe is incorrect. You insert a fresh mag, don’t rack the charging handle, you can’t put it on safe. So no, it’s not easier or safer than an AK. You can’t have a last round fired, and put it on safe. It won’t go on safe until it’s once again charged negating the supposed benefit.
You’re completely wrong, the hammer is reset by the bolt carrier moving to the rear. So even after last round fired, bolt locks back, you can put back on safe before inserting a new mag. Why in the world you would wanna do that, I’m not sure. But anyway to Jim’s point, he’s talking about picking up a gun that’s on safe and no mag inserted. So you pick it up, insert a loaded mag, pull back and let go of the charging handle to feed a round into the chamber. All while never having to mess with the safety
You cant put a milspec AR on safe until _the hammer is cocked_ . KE Arms makes a trigger than will go on safe with a downed hammer, and you can cock the hammer by pulling the carrier back without inserting a mag. The AR safety is just better, deal with it.
Just so you guys know, at the 1:30 mark when you were talking about your feelings your fathers would throw up, like I did. Who cares? Are you still 14?
Wonderful podcast. Years ago a buddy let me fire his AK, for me it was the first time. I shot maybe 5 rounds, then my brain said "this weapon was fired upon my countrymen." I handed it back. From that moment I have never fired a weapon that was fired upon my fellow countrymen in war. My intention is to never do it again.
@@ALovelyBunchOfDragonballz I got 1, an M&P. I pimped it up for a while, but it's all stock right meow, I like the simplicity. I'm in a bolt action phase at the moment after a lever action phase that took me over for some time. What problem? I don't have a problem. :D
@@ALovelyBunchOfDragonballz Get to your point. I am not here to argue. Officially adopted arms fires upon my countrymen are just not for me. OFFICIALLY. Generally. They are things I won't buy. So at this point, is the "10 Minute Talk" label just a meme?
I think in this case the "10 minute" is in reference to the acceptable in-spec accuracy of a rack-grade cold war AK with steel case ammo.

No. Not me.
half the world average owner cant have an AK or AR sorry and wants a bolt gun even half of USA wants or needs a lever or bolt rifle.
Militaries are moving to ARs (15 or 18 based), no ones moving to AKs.
Incorrect, dozens of nations still sticking with AK
Wonderful podcast. Years ago a buddy let me fire his AK, for me it was the first time. I shot maybe 5 rounds, then my brain said "this weapon was fired upon my countrymen." I handed it back. From that moment I have never fired a weapon that was fired upon my fellow countrymen in war. My intention is to never do it again.
I hope you dont like ARs, either.
@@ALovelyBunchOfDragonballz I got 1, an M&P. I pimped it up for a while, but it's all stock right meow, I like the simplicity. I'm in a bolt action phase at the moment after a lever action phase that took me over for some time. What problem? I don't have a problem. :D
@@balaton1 ARs have been fired upon your countrymen, why are they an exception?
@@ALovelyBunchOfDragonballz Get to your point. I am not here to argue. Officially adopted arms fires upon my countrymen are just not for me. OFFICIALLY. Generally. They are things I won't buy. But what you want bucko. I'll buy what I want. Some guys like Ford, some Chevy. If you have an ax to grind, do it alone
@@balaton1 I already stated my point. You dont like AKs because they've fired upon your countrymen, but you have an AR so your stated reason to not like AKs is BS.
Galil Ace Gen II best of both worlds
Not an AK. Does not adhere to majority of TDP parts or Interchangeability
