This is an underrated comment here. More need to take note of that message but that's my own opinion. Japan is rigid in its culture and isn't always willing to change. Not always a bad thing but it can have it's cons. Doesn't mean the people are necessarily hateful either, they're kind of that way with foreigners in general but I think this dude's doing well for himself for sure.
Derrick is a great guy with vision, ambition and action. He deserves success. There should be more like him (Japanese or non-Japanese), who can revitalize rural Japan.
I agree and in this economy (in Japan) that it’s really good to see foreigners (and Japanese) show people that they can not only succeed but be a positive part of the community.
It's crazy that many are crying that these areas are dying and everyone is moving to the big cities. But when others show up to revitalize it. They still complain
This is a problem here in the US too! Small business owners face an uphill battle. Big cities force us out with over priced rent. Small cities in the US are kind of dying out because everyone moved to big cities where big corporations rule.
What really impresses me about this man is how he doesn't respond to hate with more hate, but with love. He cares about giving back to the Japanese community, being a positive example, believing the positive of the country outweighs the negative. Clearly he cares about the culture. which is a shamefeul position to be in. They praise us when we allow them to humiliate and discriminate against us with no retaliation. They scapegoat us when we do retaliate and use that retaliation for justification for their initial disrespect and racist attitudes that led to retaliation. It's a lose lose situation they got us in. He’s very smart, Nojiri has been a popular summer getaway and so many American missionaries have cabins there. Folks in rural Japan are just not used to foreigners and aren’t comfortable/outgoing enough to want to interact, it’s not a race thing, it’s just unfamiliar. I always have to remind myself that Japan is a tiny island, fewer than 20% of citizens have passports, and immigration is strict and difficult = not a lot of exposure to things outside of Japan. Derrick will KILL IT with this tavern, his heart is in the right place and the locals will be able to see that in his actions ❤
I know exactly what he’s talking about. I had to move from Saga prefecture to Fukuoka for my kids sake. The attitudes in the countryside can be a bit daunting at times.

Ok this is my 3rd BEJ interview I have watched today. I work K-12 and plan to share this with some students after break. The entrepreneurial spirit of your guests and the grit they exercise to attain their goals needs to be on display to younger people. They need to see where their interests can unexpectedly lead them. I like your interview style and best of all you are not the "subject". The stories stand in far in front. Derrick is a great example of sharing a realistic outlook coupled with a drive to change things for the better for him, and his community. Thanks for sharing his story. Subscribed.
I immigrated to the US 40 years ago from Japan. I can only think of one incident of being discriminated against that I know was race related. I read japanese tourists talking about discrimination here against them. The difference between us is that I don't let little unpleasant experience bother me and dwell on the possibility of it being based on my race. If you do that and let that experience hurt you, then the racists win. Though I did not come here with these thoughts, I feel I've been truly lucky. I hope this man and his family stay strong and thrive in Japan and help this community. I truly enjoy watching your videos❤
@@rcrinsea it's not that I can't see it but I choose not to see it that way. I'm sure being an Asian person living in Western Washington State is nothing like being a black person in some other state, though. So I imagine it's much easier for me to have this mindset.

This is one of the most impressive business stories I've seen on this channel to date. Great content as usual, Ranzo. Derrick, if you happen to see this comment, know that you have a lot to be proud of. To establish a family, build a business from scratch, and become a volunteer firefighter to boot in rural Japan in a mere few years is absolutely amazing. Kudos to you. Japanese culture is very old and slow to change, so discrimination is an unfortunate bi-product that many expats have sometimes had to experience over the decades. But Japan's society is surely changing, albeit not as fast as we would sometimes like. And you undoubtedly are making an impact as an outstanding American representative in your community, particularly as a Black man. So, keep doing what you're doing. You are a pioneer!
Japan doesn’t have to change it their country those who go to it need to change they don’t care about the color of your skin. They care that you’re a foreigner because they’ve had multiple problems with foreigners over the years and that’s what makes it hard on foreigners. Just saying.

This happens with anyone, including Japanese. In some area, esp., rural area, if you are new there, some locals just oppose you for being a newcomer and not familiar w/ the local traditions. And if one does not participate/respect their traditions, everything goes downhill from there. There are stories of a newcomer not being to use local trash dump because its owned by a local group and he refused to join the group. A village without a doctor, got a doctor from outside, but drove him out. There are many stories like these.
Besides visiting Japan and your restaurant for your wonderful burgers, I am looking forward to eating your pancakes. I am an American residing in Spain and I make pancakes often, because you cannot find them here. Great endeavors by you. I am so proud of you for all of your efforts that paid off!

Man I would love to visit Japan I think it’s a naturally beautiful country and totally different than what I’m used too if I can find a travel group or get to know people already established and willing to host me as far as what and where to go it’ll make it more of a reality to visit someday.

My friend, who is (Black), went travelling around Asia. He said Japan was the best place, and Vietnam was the worst experience! So it depends on individual experiences, don't go on others..
I loved living in Vietnam, but have heard from more than one black person that they didn't have a great experience. I don't think most of it is malicious, but I can understand that it would be uncomfortable - Vietnamese aren't usually shy about hiding their curiosity
@@KallusGarnet really?? What do us as blacks have that others envy? The problem is us thinking that we are everything when we aren't anything. When you think you are everything, you don't see any reason to improve anything. How many black owned products are others racing to get their hands on? The only products that i can think of that are valuable to others are Jordans and rap music, but both of those are owned by Nike and white recording companies. As i mentioned before, we need to be more important in the world to get respect.
This is honestly what I've been saying about Pizza in Japan. Their pizza is dominated by dominos and vastly overpriced despite how cheap the ingredients are. And it tastes mid. A dude from New York or Chicago can just move to Japan, sell quality pies for cheap and essentially take over the domestic market within 5 years. Just a dude from Cali realised the local burger places are crap and understood he could do it better. So he did and living a life. Sure he gets hate for his race. But its either much worse in the US or about the same as, so whatever. But at least in Japan he's given a real shot to prove himself.
This is for Derrick, can always open that smash burger spot in LA, or the bay if to far Hawaii. I know its hard realize but it will always be a Japanese first nation , its all up in there history.
Japanese people open businesses here in the USA… so why can’t Americans open a business in Japan? Another solid experience. Keep living your vision and instill that drive in your kids. That and time will be the only thing that create change. Being apart of the volunteer fire dept was a solid move. The burger looks awesome though I'd skip the cheese for the first try. I like just tasting the flavor of the meat and cheese tends to over power the burger. Pretty cool spot you've built.
I think you can talk about the meat and cheese AFTER you've tried his burger with meat and cheese. Maybe it's different. Maybe he uses a particular cheese that's light? How would you know? You don't know.
My preference will still be without cheese. If the quality of meat good and it's nicely seasoned, then why mask it with cheese? It's quirky, I know but try a burger without cheese and see how it holds up. @@AaIsForAaliyas
This man is so interesting. Creativity comes with peace of mind. I am paying very close attention to his speech and he sounds Mexican or South American which is still hard for him (believe me I understand what he means about switching cultures) to turn off/on his personality. He is an admirable young man.
I'm Japanese, and even Japanese people can have a lot of trouble fitting into rural Japanese communities. I think it can be even more difficult if you are a foreigner for the difficulty of the language and cultural gaps. In some Japan's local areas(not all) ,local rules and culture remain deeply rooted, and there is invisible pressure to exclude people who cannot adapt to them. Japan, which has been protected by the sea, is not accustomed to changes in culture and customs, so they cling to old ways and try to protect their culture by eliminating those who cannot adapt. And it played an important role in protecting their communities. Therefore, such strong peer pressure and exclusivity may still be deeply rooted in rural areas and among elderly people. Of course, if you show them an effort to adapt, they will eventually open up. For them, it doesn't matter if you are a foreigner or what race you are, what matters most is whether you are a threat to the survival of the community.

This may be the first video where someone is real about how Japanese people CAN be. Of course, most of the time, they will be 'respectful' and quiet, and even seem warm, and friendly, but a lot of the interviewees, seem to gloss over it, and say that absolutely nothing has happened, which just can't be 100% accurate. The American intervees seem to think it's not there because it doesn't happen the same way as in the US, and the African ones seem to make excuses for the Japanese. I've been to Japan twice, and nothing too crazy happened the first time back in 2019, just a guy complaining about the recent amount of foreigners to his buddies, as I walk past, in Shinjuku. He was probably unaware that I could understand him. It wasn't even said underbrow, just casually aloud. This time, I just spent a month there in October, and this time I had a Japanese lady with me and this middle-aged Japanese guy did not like it and made his thoughts known, by addressing her, maybe thinking I didn't know what what he was saying. I simply told the young lady let's go, because if I had gotten into a shouting match, I would've been automatically worng because gaijin, and I had to weigh the worth of that satisfaction. But hey, I had the girl and he didn't. Then there was turning in a parking ticket at the police station in Akihabara, "Amerikajinka?" Yes, that's what the passort says doesn't it? Like Jesus Christ. It would've been nice to meet Ranzo and have a chat about these things. I did go to Kyle's Good Finds, and had a chat. Seeing the Japanese interact with him was pretty cool as well. Seems to be a fixture, and while I don't like carrot cake, all the Japanese were ordering it, so I decided to try it. Perhaps next time. Also pro tip: Don't get a parking/abandoned car ticket in Japan. You have to turn the ticket into the police who will then give you a form that allows to actually pay the ticket, which must be done at the post office. LOL.
The examples you stated were so minor that they don’t even really matter all that much. You’ll face more actual discrimination in the Inaka where this guy’s Tavern is located. Of course you may run into the odd old person in the big cities complaining about foreigners, but that happens in every country. I’ve never once faced discrimination in any of Japan’s cities but can easily see it happening in the countryside. I don’t think the American interviewees pretend like discrimination doesn’t happen, but it’s realistic if they never personally experience it in Japan. Whereas in the U.S. almost every non white person has faced discrimination and outright racism.

Thee will always be someone who has a bone to pick with you for whatever reason. From what I’ve heard and having friends in Hamamatsu, Japan is generally a very welcoming country. Of course people will stare at you at times but be logical about it. It’s an island that has through all of the majority of its being, remained secluded so any foreigner there is going to be, in a way, a “show” for them. But the majority of people are welcoming and will most often than not keep to themselves. Just like here in the USA, you have a few bad apples.
It also depends on where you go _inside_ said country, you’ll encounter different kinds of people and have different experiences, both good and bad. Some places just fail to keep up with the rest of the world.

That part because I just looked and saw Japan had 853 murders last year. They also have a lot of theft and other issues. They need to stop acting like Japan is perfect and every single town in the USA is terrible. I hate when people compare the entire country of the USA to one other country. Not everywhere in the USA is bad. I have lived in 7 states and know they are not the same. But people tend to always compare the most major cities in the USA and act like that represents all 50 states (every small town, rural areas, surburbs, and other places in the USA).

I mean but also don't be upset if other groups don't respect or understand you if you don't show them why you deserve it. In reality people have to show their value. With relationships, jobs, friends whatever. No one (at least no one who values their peace of mind) just accepts any and everyone into their lives without them proving themselves. Black people aren't special. We gotta show what we have to offer too. It might be one reason why we don't do well honestly. What are our exports? If anything maybe we need to show more of what we can do, not less.

Japanese culture is very old and slow to change, so discrimination is an unfortunate bi-product that many expats have sometimes had to experience over the decades. But Japan's society is surely changing, albeit not as fast as we would sometimes like. And you undoubtedly are making an impact as an outstanding American representative in your community, particularly as a Black man. So, keep doing what you're doing. You are a pioneer!
Japan doesn’t have to change it their country those who go to it need to change they don’t care about the color of your skin. They care that you’re a foreigner because they’ve had multiple problems with foreigners over the years and that’s what makes it hard on foreigners. Just saying.

This happens with anyone, including Japanese. In some area, esp., rural area, if you are new there, some locals just oppose you for being a newcomer and not familiar w/ the local traditions. And if one does not participate/respect their traditions, everything goes downhill from there. There are stories of a newcomer not being to use local trash dump because its owned by a local group and he refused to join the group. A village without a doctor, got a doctor from outside, but drove him out. There are many stories like these.
Besides visiting Japan and your restaurant for your wonderful burgers, I am looking forward to eating your pancakes. I am an American residing in Spain and I make pancakes often, because you cannot find them here. Great endeavors by you. I am so proud of you for all of your efforts that paid off!

Man I would love to visit Japan I think it’s a naturally beautiful country and totally different than what I’m used too if I can find a travel group or get to know people already established and willing to host me as far as what and where to go it’ll make it more of a reality to visit someday.

My friend, who is (Black), went travelling around Asia. He said Japan was the best place, and Vietnam was the worst experience! So it depends on individual experiences, don't go on others..

I loved living in Vietnam, but have heard from more than one black person that they didn't have a great experience. I don't think most of it is malicious, but I can understand that it would be uncomfortable - Vietnamese aren't usually shy about hiding their curiosity

When you think you are everything, you don't see any reason to improve anything. How many black owned products are others racing to get their hands on? The only products that i can think of that are valuable to others are Jordans and rap music, but both of those are owned by Nike and white recording companies. As i mentioned before, we need to be more important in the world to get respect.

This is honestly what I've been saying about Pizza in Japan.
Their pizza is dominated by dominos and vastly overpriced despite how cheap the ingredients are. And it tastes mid.
A dude from New York or Chicago can just move to Japan, sell quality pies for cheap and essentially take over the domestic market within 5 years.
Just a dude from Cali realised the local burger places are crap and understood he could do it better. So he did and living a life. Sure he gets hate for his race. But its either much worse in the US or about the same as, so whatever. But at least in Japan he's given a real shot to prove himself.

Another solid experience. Keep living your vision and instill that drive in your kids. That and time will be the only thing that create change. Being apart of the volunteer fire dept was a solid move. The burger looks awesome though I'd skip the cheese for the first try. I like just tasting the flavor of the meat and cheese tends to over power the burger. Pretty cool spot you've built.
I think you can talk about the meat and cheese AFTER you've tried his burger with meat and cheese. Maybe it's different. Maybe he uses a particular cheese that's light? How would you know? You don't know.
My preference will still be without cheese. If the quality of meat good and it's nicely seasoned, then why mask it with cheese? It's quirky, I know but try a burger without cheese and see how it holds up. @@AaIsForAaliyas

I am paying very close attention to his speech and he sounds Mexican or South American which is still hard for him (believe me I understand what he means about switching cultures) to turn off/on his personality. He is an admirable young man.
I'm Japanese, and even Japanese people can have a lot of trouble fitting into rural Japanese communities. I think it can be even more difficult if you are a foreigner for the difficulty of the language and cultural gaps. In some Japan's local areas(not all) ,local rules and culture remain deeply rooted, and there is invisible pressure to exclude people who cannot adapt to them.
Japan, which has been protected by the sea, is not accustomed to changes in culture and customs, so they cling to old ways and try to protect their culture by eliminating those who cannot adapt. And it played an important role in protecting their communities. Therefore, such strong peer pressure and exclusivity may still be deeply rooted in rural areas and among elderly people. Of course, if you show them an effort to adapt, they will eventually open up. For them, it doesn't matter if you are a foreigner or what race you are, what matters most is whether you are a threat to the survival of the community.

This may be the first video where someone is real about how Japanese people CAN be. Of course, most of the time, they will be 'respectful' and quiet, and even seem warm, and friendly, but a lot of the interviewees, seem to gloss over it, and say that absolutely nothing has happened, which just can't be 100% accurate. The American intervees seem to think it's not there because it doesn't happen the same way as in the US, and the African ones seem to make excuses for the Japanese.
I've been to Japan twice, and nothing too crazy happened the first time back in 2019, just a guy complaining about the recent amount of foreigners to his buddies, as I walk past, in Shinjuku. He was probably unaware that I could understand him. It wasn't even said underbrow, just casually aloud.
This time, I just spent a month there in October, and this time I had a Japanese lady with me and this middle-aged Japanese guy did not like it and made his thoughts known, by addressing her, maybe thinking I didn't know what what he was saying. I simply told the young lady let's go, because if I had gotten into a shouting match, I would've been automatically worng because gaijin, and I had to weigh the worth of that satisfaction. But hey, I had the girl and he didn't. Then there was turning in a parking ticket at the police station in Akihabara, "Amerikajinka?" Yes, that's what the passort says doesn't it? Like Jesus Christ.
It would've been nice to meet Ranzo and have a chat about these things. I did go to Kyle's Good Finds, and had a chat. Seeing the Japanese interact with him was pretty cool as well. Seems to be a fixture, and while I don't like carrot cake, all the Japanese were ordering it, so I decided to try it. Perhaps next time.
Also pro tip: Don't get a parking/abandoned car ticket in Japan. You have to turn the ticket into the police who will then give you a form that allows to actually pay the ticket, which must be done at the post office. LOL.
Seeing the cops for a form to pay a fine is good way of making sure anybody on the radar for anything gets another look.

The examples you stated were so minor that they don’t even really matter all that much. You’ll face more actual discrimination in the Inaka where this guy’s Tavern is located. Of course you may run into the odd old person in the big cities complaining about foreigners, but that happens in every country. I’ve never once faced discrimination in any of Japan’s cities but can easily see it happening in the countryside. I don’t think the American interviewees pretend like discrimination doesn’t happen, but it’s realistic if they never personally experience it in Japan. Whereas in the U.S. almost every non white person has faced discrimination and outright racism.

Thee will always be someone who has a bone to pick with you for whatever reason. From what I’ve heard and having friends in Hamamatsu, Japan is generally a very welcoming country. Of course people will stare at you at times but be logical about it. It’s an island that has through all of the majority of its being, remained secluded so any foreigner there is going to be, in a way, a “show” for them. But the majority of people are welcoming and will most often than not keep to themselves. Just like here in the USA, you have a few bad apples.

That part because I just looked and saw Japan had 853 murders last year. They also have a lot of theft and other issues. They need to stop acting like Japan is perfect and every single town in the USA is terrible. I hate when people compare the entire country of the USA to one other country. But people tend to always compare the most major cities in the USA and act like that represents all 50 states (every small town, rural areas, surburbs, and other places in the USA).
