They don't come along very often, but Joe is a TRUE 'living legend'. Even with his status and fame he seems just like a regular down-to-earth guy. I've been listening to his music for over thirty years, and he still manages to keep coming out with music that sounds 'fresh'. It's amazing. ROCK ON, JOE!!!!!!

I've met him a couple of times, and he's just like this interview. Even nice guys can have off days, where they don't feel like being nice to people. I know I certainly have. Does that make them an asshole? I don't think so.
People often forget that celebrities, no matter what level of fame - are human.

As a teen, "Surfing with the Alien" was an instrumental album (cassette) that I had on "replay" in my 1979 Chrysler Cordoba's Alpine stereo with Infinity speakers for weeks on end. It gave me a new perspective on guitar and made me think my car was cool.

hate to disagree Paul, this guy was never an ordinary musician !! Of course his story by the laws of natural law plus he's natural talent for the instrument led him on the path to illumination and success, many musicians get lost in their own fears, egos and distractions.
When I bought surfing with the Alien back in 95 or 96 at local store here in NY, I just couldn't believe my ears. thanks to guitar professor of mine.
I knew right away this was something above the rest.

I got an autograph from Joe back in the early 90s when I worked for Walgreens on California and Spruce Street. I helped him find an item and then asked him for a quick autograph. He is a very kind person. By then I already owned his EP-Dreaming#11 which I bought in 1988 containing my favorite song The Crush of Love. Yes, I still have his autograph.

I ran one of the clubs that Joe played in San Francisco, The Palms Cafe. One evening in the early summer of 1980, The Squares were booked, but I was unable to be there when the show started. Coming in late, while the band was deep into their set, I rounded the corner, heading for the door down to my office when Joe took a solo. At the first phrase, I was stopped dead in my tracks. The sound, the tone, the execution, all were sheer perfection. I've heard most of the great bands of my era, many of them in live concert, but Joe's performance that night on that song on my stage, was one of the greatest experiences I've ever had listing to live music. Hello, Joe, from across the vast expanse of space and time. All the best.

You have took this ridiculously off topic, all you have done is insult me...? like I actually don't understand why you are doing this. If your doing this just to troll me, it hasn't worked. Writing an essay insulting me is pretty hilarious and sad, it would make sense if you are actually in your teens, but if you are an adult that's even worse. Whats even worse is I'm actually 17 and still replying to you. I'm not one for insults usually, but just a fuck you is just fine, no need to get all weird.

And now you're squealing like a stuck pig. You know your looking pretty bad here right? I'm just being kind dude. Cont. . .

I saw Joe 2nd row in Halifax, Nova Scotia, on his last club tour. It was the most amazing display of guitar virtuosity I have ever seen in my entire life. Absolutely amazing. Sadly, I always worry about his health because he never looks like he's healthy. Is it the lack of hair or the lack of tan?
God, he's a damn genius, though.

Jwestcott5000 I've been following Satch since I was about 12-13 and I'm 31 now and I have no idea what you're referring too. He's always looked and seemed very healthy at any point in time I've seen. Full of life, energy, passion and he always exudes a lot of love and happiness. I know he cut his hair so it's not like it fell out or something lol he's not pale either so idk I don't see it. I mean I know he's white too so I don't expect to see a tan either. Different perspectives I guess. However I can see aging in his eyes and skin etc. a[though he still looks good for his age but after watching some old footage right before watching this, it's really apparent that he's aged quite a bit!
Can you elaborate and/or refer me to some footage, examples???

im a bass player but i dabble in other stringed instruments and a huge zappa fan ... i followed the breadcrumbs to joe and went to see him a couple of times in scotland ... one time i was in row 2 or 3 and he did the usual throwing picks after numbers
i caught one !!!! ... not long after my mum passed and i got myself a muscle purple one ( and a floral vai because )
my strat has the gk roland pickup on it and i use that for almost everything
but the guitar on the wall next to my helix is the purple and its always plugged in
i learned midnight and am working on satch boogie ( all the way to the fast bit ... wonderful )

WOW ! this segment was awesome! I saw him play at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium in 1984 in California (near LA). That show blew everyone there away (it was a small Venue +or-1200 people).
