I watched your video two years ago and made up my mind to buy myself and learn to using the cnc, and now I finally owning a full wooden DSA keyboard, is tough to get everything correct :) thx for your video.
Wim's Mill imgur.com/a/p0wUVI5 DSA don’t have a specific row height, a little bit easier than other profiles, but i does like the feeling of DSA more than OEM😂
Thanks. I believe I bought it from Sorotec: www.sorotec.de/shop/CNC-Zubehoer/taster/werkzeuglaengensensor/ Yes, they are 1mm. Smaller is also possible. I think I found them on www.gravierbedarf.de or www.freesjes.nl Prices er quite good
That is some interesting things to think about. It might be possible and probable looks sick when done right. Sadly I don't have the time at the moment to pursue this.
@@WimsMill and I don't have the cnc to go for it myself. But can link or if you find yourself, already pre cut slabs of black buffalo horn 10cmx5cmx2cm (15€). Didnt find a good supplier of white watussi horn or thicker bone plates, though.
@@WimsMill My second guess would be maple, but I felt like that would be too obvious. Thanks again for the video. I want to try making some of my own some day.
Unfortunately, it was not viable to make these. I would have to double the price to keep making them. Even then, I would need a lot of interested people, before I can do it again.
The next level, I bet, would be to engrave numbers/letters into the face, pour black epoxy (or something) into the engraving, and then cut the face off, again, to leave only the lettering behind, flush with the wooden face. Poor man's CNC double-shot. Think of it! You're practically there already. Dang I need a CNC.
Yes, that would be really nice. It would probably also be doable to make inlays with other wood(contrasting) or brass. Yes you can do wonderful things with a CNC. I can really recommend it.
Amazing work and the wood you choose is just beautifull! Is it possible to you to share the fusion 360 file? It will be easier to make the cam for my small desktop cnc!
@@ivanbbctba Please see in the description. I added a link to the grabcad location. I also put the Fusion 360 file in there. Enjoy! For the holder, you can also make it out of wood or plastic. I like the rigidity of aluminium though.
Sure it can be milled out of wood. Just take the right kind of wood (Pear, cherry or other short grained wood). Also nice try on the wood. the look can be quite similar.
@@WimsMill not sure if I am allowed more attempts, but I my other thoughts were beech or ash. (just ignore this comment if it is only 1 guess per subscriber) Would you be willing to try milling the frame for a dactyl keyboard out of wood? (and how much it would cost, alternatively, if you are interested if you milled two frames then I could make two keyboards (one for you and one for me). While the curves for the top shape of the keyboard should follow the dactyl layout, other things could be potentially changed depending on milling requirements, such as how it joined to the bottom frame or giving more space inside of the keyboard or making the base heavier). As to the type of wood, I would be happy to go with your recommendation. You can message me directly if this project is of interest. I think it would be a challenging but awesome project.
@@HongKongGhost It sounds like an interesting project. However, it is a development project and that may cost quite a lot of time and trials. I am currently a bit strained on time. Also I am located in Europe and sending this types of parts outside of Europe is not cheap (About 20 euro port cost). If you are close, I might be up for it.
@@WimsMill I am happy that this sounds like an interesting project. If you put it on hold until you have more time that would be fine. Yes it is a development project but there is no rush :). My parents are based in England but sometimes visit me in Korea and I sometimes visit them in England. This may alleviate some of the postage costs, but overall I think that I should cover the postage costs for this project. Where are you based?
I milled the negative on the underside of the keycap. I left enough room to the sides and made a tight hole for the stud, which connect to the switch. I made the stud a rounded rectangle. See 9 seconds into the clip. I held the keycaps down with double sided tape. I hope this is clear enough for you.
@@wespanaino1997 No, double sided tape is good for holding it down. But its bad for lateral forces. That's what the pocket is for. If you go to 2:34, you can see the aluminium pockets. Around the pockets is a small raised part for the tape to adhere to and some indentations for a keycap puller to fit under the keycaps.
@@WimsMill Hey thanks for showing that. Also which program did you use to make the keycap for the cnc. I am currently using Vcarve and if you used that could you possibly make a tutorial about how you placed it and did it in your program. Thanks
Sorry, these guesses are not correct and it is not really fair to guess multiple times. I believe I haven't ever seen these trees or woodtypes in my life.

Is it goat willow / salix caprea? Great project for getting into cnc
Thank you very much. It was quite challenging to set up. Sorry, it is not goat willow. I believe that would be a lot lighter colour.
Really well done. My guess is chestnut wood.
Sorry Marc, that is not the correct wood type. I'm glad you enjoyed this video.
Absolutely beautiful. I was looking to do exactly this and am glad I found your video.
Thank you very much. If have questions, feel free to contact me.
Very nice :) are they made from boxwood (buxushout)?
Thank you. No, these keycaps are made from walnut (European).
Where did you buy that z probe plate? Also nice video. I am looking to do something similar, are those 1mm diameter endmills?

Nice keycaps. Is the answer to your question Larch wood?
Thank you. Good guess, but it is not Larch
Great video! That is definitely PEAR WOOD!
It's close but unfortunately not close enough. The space-bar in the last shot is pear wood. The bark is not quite right for pear.

Cherry wood!!
