Hi I'm crystal ,I can say that if it wasn't for the Calgary city police,I wouldn't be alive today. I was a homeless women here in Calgary since I came here in 2003, I was involved in the drug and prostitution. I have been in and out of jail . Did thing I wasn't proud of and was disrespectful to the only men and women who put there live in danger every day . But then I learned that if you respect them and don't lie to them things are alot better. I can proudly say that since 2010 I have since then smartend up life and have been off the streets and out of the criminal lifestyle since. I can honestly say that if it wasn't for the cops basically scaring me straight I wouldn't be here today. Take from someone who has been on streets and in and out of jail like a revolving door ,who knows where I'd be. So I just wanted to say to the strong men and women who put there lives on the line every day. Thank you. You saved my life.

There are a number of social agencies in the City that do great work in providing shelter and other necessities, but there are several reasons why people can’t or won’t access them. Capacity, substance abuse, lifestyle choices (living as a couple), or past incidents are some examples that may keep someone on the outside looking in. Also, there are a number of homeless people who refuse the services of a shelter as they don’t want to be subject to the agency’s rules, or they have other anxieties.

The public needs to understand the police deal with, and arrest, the most violent and disruptive of individuals. My view as a visual journalist differs from law enforcement, it's sobering. The number of individuals that I speak with that admit to being homeless, or have been homeless has taken my breath away.
Many of the people I meet are on good behavior and fitting into society as best they can, including me.

Thank you for what you do. I agree we need a better system for drunk people rather than jail. At my workplace we’ve had a number of drunk people come and we just don’t know what to do with them either rather then send them away.

My experience with the PACT team was not at all indicative of what this video portrays. In fact the PACT team helped put me out on the street and in jail when in fact I was the victim. They simple were not able to distinguish the difference between victim and perpetrator. I would also like to know where are all those resources that help homeless people get off the streets? And where do victims of police incompetence, corruption and brutality go for help? I will be making a video that portrays the covert side of this issue. This video has inspired me to do just that.. thanks!

Yes but can you stop the government from making the housing so it’s out of touch for these homeless people

Only way to stop this cycle is to take there rights away put them in reforming camps, detox them and reeducate them. Than help them find a job and a place to live and follow up. If there repeat offenders who refuse to take control of there life in a positive way instead of prison use work camps. I've worked in health care and the amount of money and time put into these people is insane and it takes away form the rest of the public. We as a society cannot allow them to take advantage of use.

What happened to Amber I seen all the time. My favorite is drunk in public like they have somewhere to go? And why call the police here we have what is know as Doap Team call them if the getting crazy then ya call CPS. I was homeless for 4 years in Calgary The police just jump to fact that everyone is on drugs. The thing I have see from CPS is disgusting and positive. I so can't wait till I get to talk with CPS

If the government is funding anything for homelessness all that funding should go to the homeless instead to get them off the streets and then they would have money left over

It takes a homeless person maybe $12-$15,000 a year to live on maybe a little bit more now maybe 20,000 considering you’re paying 100,000 for each person on the street for sale do your big savings

Good for you Rita!!! I'm from Calgary as well, and have been in and out of jail since I was 14,and i'm 38 now and still have some FTA's do deal with. I'm trying to get a place still, and it's not as easy as it was 5-7 yrs ago. They want to do credit checks and background checks, and all of that info is not good,i'm receiving welfare and because I was jumped and robbed in downtown Calgary......and I was sexually assulted as well, they did a rape test kit so that's how they found out at the hospital, and I also still to this day don't know how I got there, they called my best friend and she came to the hospital to see me and to pick me up,I have severe memory loss, nerve damage on the right side of my body,and......sorry,this is hard to talk about...there were burn marks on my body. And that's why i'm receiving benifits, and trying to get on Aish,my only older brother was deported last year,my Mother passed away as well. I don't know why i'm telling you all this,i'm scared and in need of desperate help, and don't know what else to do....sorry

That holding cell looks/sounds like it's on the same wavelength as the nut house. I do not know how you can listen to the bar rattling and screaming/insults all day. I totally commend all of the individuals working in that specific department for dealing with the loonie toons day in and day out.
In fact, I think each and every single one of the cops in this video, is a boss. Especially Dan Guenette, mad respect for him. =)
