Always fun to go back to seminal stories in a Genre!
It is prehaps not a surprise that a number of the Great 70-80’s Sci-Fi movies had their origin or themes explored in stories from a generation or more before: A famous example is Harlan Elison’s suing the Production Company behind “The Terminator” based on an 60’s episode of “Outer Limits” he wrote, or how George Lucas used “John Carter of Mars” and “Flash Gordon” as direct for inspiration for the Star Wars! So even if there are clear differences between this story and “Alien”, I think with its similarities, it is only fair that Vogt got some compensation!

Agree 💯. I definitely need to get to some Ellison 👍.

I’m always impressed when a short story can pack a punch in so few pages. I typically struggle with short story collections bc they usually feel unfinished. 🚀

Definitely, it must be one of the hardest things to achieve.

I actually have book number 2 in those Novella collections. I've not read huge amounts of Van Vogt so I don't know that story. I read an interview with Dan O Bannon, which I think was in an old Starlog Magazine (which i may have to dig out) that when he was writing Alien his Inspirations included The Black Destroyer and a Clfford Simak and a Philip Jose Farmer short story (cant rember which ones). Also there is a 60's Italian SF/Horror film called Planet of the Vampires that he finally admitted a few years back was the inspration for the Alien Skeleton scene. It's a bizzare film if you ever watch it.This sounds like a great short which I will have to look out for.

Not a bad idea of a rabbit hole or series to jump on; all the influences of Alien.
