loved the OC tbh. Still using the Thomann t-bone SC1100, which was designed by ex Neumann engineers, but I think the OC818 would be amazing for vocals and guitar amps. Loved the roundness on the amp. It feels like you can hear the price tag :P
I liked the low end on the OC818 better than the 640 but both sounded nice. I would like you to review the Lewitt DPT 640 REX. I like the concept of that mic and the price point isn't bad considering you sort of get 2 mics but I would like to hear a trusted review, especially from a drummer perspective.
I would choose the OC cause to me the LCT boosts high frequencies a bit too much. And in the end it´s easier to boost those frequencies on a neutral recording while mixing than to eliminate an overexaggerated high frequency spectrum. Same goes for AKG C141 XLII and C414 XLS. I always would choose the S version.
I purchased and returned both a couple years ago, but last month I picked up another LCT640TS. It's such a great mic for instruments. I feel that the OC818 is marginally better on vocals, but neither was ever beating my Copperhead in that department, which is why I ended up sending both of them back. But on acoustic guitar, I never forgot the amazing tones I was able to achieve with the Lewitt, which is why I ended up getting another.
The OC818 wins by a wide margin for me; it's much more neutral-sounding and more processing-friendly than the Lewitt. I find that once you have a bright microphone, it's hard to get that brightness out of it if you don't need it.
They both have a great sound, but the OC818 has a bigger boost on the mids that sounded too boxy on the acoustic guitar in my opinion. I'd pick the Lewitt.
Many Thanks from France for all your videos ! What do you think about the Townsend Labs Sphere L22? It seems to be the top of this type of microphones.
Sphere L22 is really great mic and the modelling software could be used with those mics here as well. The results could be surprising, but nevertheless interesting. I would be inclined to think that Lewitt 640 dual recording would result in amazing experiments with the UAD Bill Putnam TownsendLabs Sphere mic add on plugin. Heck I might even try that out at some point
@@mixdownonline You own it to yourself to try it out... I love it! Chris I love the sound of your room (drums) just my taste and congrats on a great video and extremely interesting and talented singer👍!
I know it will sound as a little compromised opinion, but I must say they both sound great and the charm is that they are noticeably different, indeed, but both sound top for my amateur ears. One could make great use of their characters depending on what one wants to reach. Or both could be used for similar recordings for doubling, for example. And one more time we can watch friend Jimmy in Äkschn.
Lewitt sounded cleaner on acoustic which would be one of my primary applications. I dug the Aston, on the electric amp it sounded fat and funky. I’d probably choose the Lewitt for myself but, like you said, probably depends on source and chain. My Midas preamps are already warm and fat sounding, so looking for something to bring the bright back in✌️
I thought the OC818 sounded like a record (like a polished product, whatever that means to me), and the LCT640TS sounds like real life (like I'm standing in the room.)
Hi , They seem very innovative to me, well done. the idea of diagrams with plugin another gem. very interesting. if I had to buy a microphone I'll give it a little thought.
how to best compare these to the Lewitt 540 S or 640, or the 441 Flex mic from Lewitt? Lewitt got good prices on their mics, but is this company better?! or are they so similar that one should choose one based on price? Thanks to anyone helping out to clarifying this! Is cyber week and ai am about to order one company over the other... So really appreciate some help to understand this better! 😊
Weird...the connector type for the OC818's second output, is known as a "TA5" in the broadcast community. It is a 5-pin version of the TA3 (aka Micro XLR). The strange part about it is, like MIDI you're only using 3 of the 5 pins. In broadcast, wireless transmitters by Lectrosonics use the various pins for Line vs Mic level (and some other function that I can't remember) on the transmitter input. Since the OC818's cable terminates on XLR, there is no other use for the remaining 2 pins....so why did they not use the slightly more accessible TA3 (Micro XLR)? Sort of a red flag to me..."Make sure you only use are dumb cable" sort of thing.
The same port on the back of the mic is used for the remote control bluetooth receiver, so I guess TA5 is used so that this receiver can communicate with the mic and/or get power from the phantom power through the extra pins.
Another great video, and both nice mics. I'm still trying to make up my mind which JZ mic to buy while their sale is on (thanks Chris!). It's a tough decision, the black hole or the V67???
I was focusing on the lovely electric guitar performance I had to go back to see which mics were being used. Haha. Thank you for the lovely music! (and of course the review ;))
Thanks that was very effective-.I would chose OC818 to record Vocals and Aqustic guitars maybe electric guitars as well recording- Lewitt seems better on drums to my ears- But that amount of money i still would invest on something else at this point :)
@@josuastangl7140 maybe a guitar amp or another guitar, or just more recording equipment. Or just nothing about musical production save it for a short holiday>)
While the two mics certainly don't sound the same, they don't sound tremendously different. I probably prefer the tone of the OC818, while, in addition, it offers the most amazing set of features I would never use in the history of microphones. The Lewitt case is way too big for practical storage in a limited-space mic locker, and a real turn-off TBH.
I like both but I think the Lewitt would be better if it would split the difference in its brightness/openness compared to the OC818. It sounds just a db or 2 too bright and open bordering on irritating.

The LCT640 is a pretty great mic, regardless of price point. You sound like someone who spends too much time listening to opinions on recording forums.
Did either of these mics stand out to you? Also, what is your "go to" mics in your Home Studio!

Cool video. Thx Chris! Greets from Vienna.
Glad you liked it! You made a great mic here, I really enjoy recording with it, thanks!
I really enjoyed the music samples in this video. So nice to hear something different!
Awesome, thanks Mike!
Two very innovative and nice-sounding mics from Austria. I tend to prefer the clarity of the Lewitt. But I like the old-fashioned look of the 818.
Late to the party but my impression: lewitt for pop/rock oc818 for jazz/classical. Really nice review btw, thank you!

True. Just AA mics have some notch at around 6khz, not natural at all.

I've got to be honest with myself here: these two microphones are waaaaaaay more similar than they are different, and I should get the cheapest one
That's why I make these types of videos, to give people a clear choice for their needs :-)
Thanks for the comparison, I really liked the sound of the Austrian Audio OC818, I prefer over the Lewitt. I think it has more body and it's smoother.

Austrian audio!
One is made in China and the other in Austria. Where are the electronic components sourced? That matters to me. They determine lifespan and drift.
