I'm so happy I found this video, thank you so much for giving me hope! I just graduated with my MSW and i've been applying for ALL the Academic Advisor positions in my state but I haven't had any luck (I won''t give up tho!). I just finally told myself to also apply for other positions for now, which will still allow myself to get experience with students and then I've eventually make my way into what I actually want (Academic Advising) so thank you for bringing up the importance of experience. This sounds great! I also feel particularly called to work with college-aged individuals who are transitioning into adulthood. I guess, because I didn't have the guidance I needed at that time, I want to offer it to others.
This Spring, I was planning on beginning a master's in higher education administration. Now, however, I'm contemplating whether getting an MSW and advocating for internship/practicum experience in higher ed is a better route (it certainly gives me more options).

I may very well be bias but I would not recommend the masters in higher Ed. Specially because it doesn’t lead to a license. Social Work is so broad, it took me 5 years to get my license and I believe the license opens doors like teaching as an adjunct.

This is amazing!!! With the job being half social work/case management and half counseling it’s like the best of both worlds because I love both aspects of those two fields. Sounds like you love your job and I cannot wait to be at that point in life!

This was very insightful. I'm in Canada and want to become an academic advisor, but still found the info helpful. My goal is to get an administrative job in a school then work my way up. I wish I knew this is what I wanted to do right after highschool lol ...

So glad I found this video, I’m in my senior year of my BSW and I really feel like I found a passion for this career and field but I feel like it’s not a typical career choice for those getting a social work degree. So I was excited when I seen the title!
I’m so glad you found it helpful! It’s not the typical SW role or as popular but we use so many of the skills in it. I think it’s also perfect for SWers who are more solution focused.

Depending on your area it may be easier to get into community colleges or private schools..it also could be your resume (keywords) they like to see that you have experience with students and using the computer applications

Social work is a rewarding and sometimes tiring line of work, especially when dealing with all the political stuff. I love it some 20 plus years later. You are in a much needed area, school/career advisor. Stay on top of your continue Ed credits and do get your licensure. Your voice is heard more when you have those letters behind your name

My degree is in Criminal Justice. My second choice was Social Work. There are so many opportunities & possibilities with a social work degree 👌🏼

When I see careers that people choose I often times wonder how it came about. I don't blame you about working with high school students. You would see my face plastered on the news if I worked around high schoolers . LOL I wanted to be a nurse mid wife, but the math.
I wonder that too!! lol I also wonder sometimes what we would do if it wasn't what we're doing now and if we would still be happy..I believe there are certificate programs for midwifery without having a nursing license. That's a really cool career and much needed!
@@LifeCoachYvette Not sure but I do know that many moons ago, you had to be a RN and work in the field and you'd have to be recommended to the midwife program. There are Doula's now that take a certification training also.
Trying to keep up with what they need and everything must be hard but rewarding

So I’m currently a graduate assistant with my university in disability services, (I advise students and work on my schools social media) getting my masters in communication studies. I’m wondering what other internships I should go for? Or is the graduate assistant job really good to get my foot in? Thanks!

Your experience is great and will definitely help you get your foot in. I would recommend gaining more in the specific student affairs area you are interested in even if it is volunteer work. The more systems and processes you know and experience you have the better.

What were your experiences in getting internships? Were you able to work with college advisors?
I did my masters in social work so we had to do two internships. My second one was doing career & college work with high school students after school..during undergrad I volunteered in career services and worked as a RA, orientation leader and tour guide. I think my leadership experiences in general made me marketable..I didn’t have direct advising experience b/c I didn’t know I wanted to be an advisor at that time

When I graduated from the MSW, I had two job offers. One was working with high school students in an alternative program..the other was a college advisor. Because I preferred the college setting, I chose advising and been in it since..going on 6 years now

What did you do in your MSW internship working with college students? Just curious because I’m not seeing a lot of internship positions for MSW students, but I’m hopeful that the need will grow
I have a Masters in Elementary Education and I have 14 years of experience. I just applied for a position at a college in my area and I hope they call because teaching at public schools isn't working for me anymore. I will take the salary cut.

No, we do not. Summers are just not as busy and some colleges have summer Fridays where you get fridays off or half day

I'm currently a secondary education major (working towards 7-12th grade teaching), but I'm starting to realize that advising is the avenue in education for me to be. I'm thinking about switching my major to something sociology/humanities related so it'll help me understand people & life experiences better. Any thoughts on that as opposed to getting into advising from a education degree background? Hi Alex, glad you enjoyed it! Depending on how far you are into your major you can stay or switch if it allows you to graduate within the same time frame. The most important is your experience working with college students ideally in advising but career, student services, etc. works as well. It will take a lot of trial and error but once you find it you're gonna be so happy. I would recommend volunteering in your areas of interest. There's so many different ways to help people and you will find your niche 💕

I have seen people say that administrative positions are a good entry position but are there more options? Most schools seem like they prefer someone have their masters . And is it true that there is a big hiring freeze right now?
Glad it was helpful! It would be best to apply to positions working with students in some capacity. For example, ideally in the college setting but also non-profit organizations that help students with college and career positions are definitely transferrable. Thank you for this helpful video! I have my MSW as well, and I have been applying to Academic Advisor positions as well as Career Advisor positions. What would be your advice on applying to these positions, and universities all want references or reference links to be completed? This often turns me away because I don't want to burn out references I am comfortable with using for multiple jobs.
Most only require a resume and cover letter then the references may come later on. My advice for applying is to tailor your resume experience with the requirements of the position & always submit a cover letter

At times MSW graduates feel that they can not land jobs with just alone their MSW degree. There is not much youtube content speaking to the various jobs with an MSW or LMSW and the salary compensation. Thanks!

Do you think I would be able to fit the needs and roles of an academic advisor well? I'm really wanting to pursue this, but I'm unsure if I will be qualified.
Definitely! Advising is problem solving, solution-focused & providing resources. As long as you market your skills & experiences well, you should be fine.

Adjunct Professor, Life Coach, teaching English remotely & depends on your degree..if you have a Masters in Social Work you can do per diem in the hospital, therapy, DSP, etc.

Not at all! As long as it does not conflict with work time you're good. It's the perfect combo financially.

I’m currently pursuing a degree in management with a concentration on HR. This past year I’ve been really interested in social work and teaching. Academic advising is what I believe I would love to do. What do you believe would be best for me to transition from a management degree to a career in social work? I’m planning on getting a masters in social work, but i’m interested in teaching too so do you think teacher education would be better? Sorry, I know i’m kinda all over this place! 😅
Hi Nicole! Teaching on what level? College? Also, yes a Masters in Social Work would be great. It doesn't matter what your Bachelor's degree is in. I would recommend trying to get experience within an advising department or working with students in any way.

No, you don't need a PhD to teach on the college level. You can be an adjunct professor. For high school or elementary you would have to get your Masters in that area. For college level, you can start gaining experience now as a teaching assistant to get your foot in the door. With the degree you are pursuing, you would qualify for freshman seminar courses or intro level management courses.
