    I went to community College for 4 years. I went into an academic advisor every semester. I finally ask "how close am I to graduating?" And they tell me "if you finish this algebra class you will get 2 degrees." Like, what?! 2?! I was only going for 1! What is this other degree? Humanities. It was humanities. I didn't even know humanities was a degree, but now I guess I'm human as fuck now.

    I raw dogged community college for my A.A. without ONCE speaking to an advisor. I’m now at a university and these people they call “advisors” are so bothered by the fact that I’m a woman in STEM. I can barely get a hold of the ONE advisor in my major and when I do… nothing gets done? You’re actually telling me that I pay $13,000 a semester to have a staring contest with a stranger who is responsible for my academic future? I’m so glad that this is a universal experience bc it is so not slay

  • @Fredlyy
    @Fredlyy ปีที่แล้ว +181

    I transferred from a big university where the advisors were just like this to a smaller one where there were like 30 people total in my program. The difference in advisors was insane. I went into their office and they *knew my name* BEFORE I introduced myself. And then they sat down with me for an hour and 30 minutes and planned out my entire academic career.

      I went the opposite direction (2k student school to 30k) and strangely had the opposite experience! My old school only had one counselor who would make all academic plans. She was always busy and didn't remember everyone
      My current school has so many that it feels more personalized. My current advisor spends extra time with me as needed and also offers emotional help
      generally speaking though, I imagine it's more common for smaller schools to have better counselors

  • @jeremy1392

    The academic advisor point is so real. My college closed over the pandemic and got absorbed by another one. We were lucky, they promised same time to graduation. But of course different colleges use different credit systems and have different graduation requirements. So I have friends who started college doing things the new university doesn't have requirements for, so they were supposed to say "this is a fringe requirement your school had, this is a fringe requirement ours had, we'll just say theirs fills ours," but many advisors just didn't. So I know tens of students who're having to pay for a whole extra full or half semester at least just because they didn't fulfill their promise.

    I have a story, it’s long and may be boring: So I’m in Mexico and we also have Academic advisors named “tutors/mentors” they are supposed to guide you and help you pass. My mentor was someone that was never really around even though she was a teacher there and had “office hours” every damn day. In all honesty, I saw her only 9 times in my career, only when I needed her approving signature. My story, I had a hard time adapting to university my first two semesters and this caused me to go deeper into my depression and failing one, ONE class. Mind you, my clases were not “serial” meaning I had to pass one to go onto the next level in the following semester. I went to see her to let her know, because we had to, and she legit freaked out on me and gave me a whole ass speech on how I am so disappointing and I have ruined her record of perfect “mentees”. Like lady… lady! I am dying here, I lost two family members, I’m depressed, anxiety is getting to me, considering to take a break from school and failing that class. Anyways, she insists I repeat the course the following semester in order for me to get her record straight, I tell her no, if I failed it once, I will do so again because you made me take a class I didn’t like or needed. We go back a forth for like an hour. I finally tell her again that no, I’m not doing what she wants, it does not affect her or her income what I do. She reluctantly signs my approval for next semester and this goes on for 7 more semesters. Every single time I needed her signature, we had the same argument. I decided that I was going to move along with my career and leave that course for an additional semester, one where I didn’t have any other classes to worry about and would only focus on passing it because she would literally call me a failure and I am petty and wanted revenge lol. Anyways, I did just that, I passed the course with an equivalent of and A+, did all my paperwork so that the same week I was done with that class, I could take my oath into the career and never have to see her or the school in general ever again.
    Moral of the story, I hated university and my advisor so much. I am now in a job that I love, got to graduate with honors despite my failed course and have a stable income and mental health.

      C.L.E.P. tests are OUTRAGEOUSLY helpful. #1: Pick a pre-req class that you know you’d crush, for example English Lit if you’ve already been a nerdy reader familiar with the classics. #2: sign up and pay $40 or $60 dollars. #3: Do the 3-hour multiple choice test, #4. BAM !! If you pass, you just won 3 fully-use-able credits and completely vaulted over a semester long class that would’ve had quizzes and group-projects & taken time that you would’ve preferred to spend on something related to your major. PLUS If you come from a bi-lingual home, you pro’lly can crush the C.L.E.P. test that subs for a 3-credit, full-semester class on your family’s language. Depending upon what academic areas you’re strong in…you can take a TON of those “testing out” tests. 🤟

    Hey Aisha you should debate movie scenes on whether they made the right decisions. Like for instance in titanic everyone says that there was enough room for jack on the luggage or piece of ship wreck.

    It seems like my uni academic advisor avoids me like the plague. Then I remember the teary-eyed meeting I had with him last year AND the fact that I’m currently taking 19 credits. Go figure.

    I did community college and only met with an advisor when I enrolled because it was mandatory, and then never met with them again. I had the same thing when I graduated and transferred to a four year and am gonna graduate this spring without having met with them :x

    I’m trying to register for my classes for next semester and there just ARENT ANY meeting options (which was never an issue last year) 😁 love it!! best part is there aren’t any available for the next few months and you can’t try to schedule one because they don’t have that option for advising ❤

    aisha you should make a video about the correct order of the alphabet
    for example, q should be closer to the end of the alphabet. what is it doing in the middle.
