Keanu Reeves was able to make Shadow all his own without copying any of the other voice actors while staying true to who Shadow is; a cool, complex character who’s dealing with years of trauma and grief. Reeves made Shadow sound bad ass, funny and heartfelt in Sonic 3 and I couldn’t agree more with the praise he gets for his voice acting
Ian Hanlin for sure! This is the first time Shadow actually sounds eloquent and intelligent. The others make him sound edgy but imo there is no depth to it (Keanu excluded because we haven't heard much of him yet). But I must say I did like the way Kirk voiced Shadow in the recent Sonic X Shadow Dark Generations episode. There was certain warmth to it that I really liked.

Kudos to Kirk Thornton. He vastly improved from his earlier appearances in Boom and Free Riders. He doesn’t just sound like an angsty teen with a frog in his throat anymore. He’s actually been nailing Shadow’s smoothness more recently.

That is exactly what I was thinking to write about. To me, because of Sonic X, Jason Griffith will always be my Shadow just as he is my Sonic. Humphrey is the one who introduced us to the character while Thornton’s take on it has improved since Forces. Hanlin’s, on the other hand, was spot-on in his debut because Shadow’s voice is a brooding tone but one that shouldn’t be exaggerated since it would feel very off. Lastly, Keanu’s voice for Shadow was very unexpected but after hearing it in the trailer, he actually nailed it.

Jason Griffith. His portrayal in Sonic X was a little weak, but he got a good grasp on the voice in Shadow the Hedgehog and Sonic 06. There's a reason his take is so iconic. 3. David Humphries. He was at his strongest in Sonic Heroes. Honestly, I think he was underserved by the sound mixing in SA2, but he does a very good job in the most important scenes. 4. Kirk Thornton. It’s hard to say. Jason Griffith I’ve been the most familiar with and is probably my favorite. David Humphrey is great, but it’s a shame he had a short run when Sonic’s transition to 3D was still rough. Kirk Thornton I didn’t like for a while but he really grew into the role and the recent shorts showed it. Ian Hanlin I think is secretly the best. He has the best range. And I can’t wait to see how Keanu voices Shadow. Very excited for the movie.
My ranking: 5. Keanu Reeves: it just does not sit well with me yet 4. David Humphrey: he has the smoothness and the mysterious vibe to it, but I wish the voice was deeper. The higher voice makes him sound a little whiny at times. 3. Kirk Thornton: Definitely the most improved player. While it’s not perfect, as of Sonic X Shadow Generations, and possibly even Forces, his voice finally has Shadow’s smoothness. I also adore the personality in his voice, and the deepness is just right. 2. Jason Griffith: I’ll concede: the former GOAT has been dethroned. I may have bias because his voice is so damn hard to match, but when he voices Shadow, the smoothness is perfect. He does a great job getting the edginess, yet calmness of his voice. My one gripe is that his edginess is a little over the top, and removes Shadow’s personality. I’ve noticed that when doing my Shadow voice with a Jason Griffith inflection. 1. Ian Hanlin: This guy took the personality of Kirk, the mysterious vibe of David, and the smoothness of Jason, and gave us the best Shadow voice, as well as the first Shadow voice that I can remember which doesn’t feel like an outlier from the voices of the other Sonic characters.
1. Jason (really good in sonic x and Shadow the hedgehog) 2. David 3. Ian 4. Kirk (really didn't like him in Boom) Keanu(undecided) - gotta hear more of his lines.
I just adore David’s ability to make Shadow sound intimidating when he feels he needs to be, but softer and more emotional when he feels unsure or vulnerable or really anything other than angry. Jason and Kirk to me just sound too unnatural and forced. Ian was perfect for Shadow in Sonic Prime, since he was written as a much more confident, self-assured character, and really nailed it with Shadow’s growls and lower register too. I’m excited to hear Keanu’s Shadow performance, I think he has the potential to be a good mix of David’s emotional voice and Ian’s aggressive, confident voice.
Ian Halen and David Humphries are my fave Shadow VA's, but that's mainly because I'm used to Ryan Mitchum voicing Shadow from the Sonic dubs. I hope Keanu did his homework in regard to the Sonic movie, but from what I hear, I worry that I'll just hear John Wick and not Shadow's.

Very new to the Sonic lore (i played when i was little but Sonic 3 has made me a huge Shadow fan) and i definitely think Ian Griffith is my favorite. He sounds the most natural of all his voice actors
David was really quite good, especially once Heroes rolled around. He was menacing and had some gravitas, especially in his early scenes, but he had a sense of cockiness that mirrored Sonic's. He was the Ultimate Lifeform and he *knew* it.
Ian in this era of Modern Shadow (which allegedly Prime is supposed to be Modern canon) fits so well! It accumulates his iconic traits but is self-assured and more secure in himself, a more or less "healed" and reformed Shadow, which gives more variety in his range of emotion. Still grumpy and ticked but can easily flow into concerned and sarcastic.
*1st Place David Humphrey* You can't be the first, the original, the best (and not even because of nostalgia). The smoothness, and the seriousness all mesh as one, and the play-off of Sonic's personality all working together is what made Shadow, Shadow. *2nd Place Ian Hanlin* After years of people changing Shadow and not knowing who he is supposed to be and what is supposed he to act like Ian comes close to bringing Shadow back to his former glory. But the voice is too griddy at times and the hip Gen Z lines don't help as it tries to force coolness on to his character. 3rd Place Jason Griffith* Hum, well this guy sounds too much like Sonic......... You can hear it in his voice to offend and when he first showed up in Sonic X, he sounded like the Gentleman thief. While he's not bad, he just comes off as a little goofy. *4th Place Kirk Thornton but really last place* MAN!!!! This guy is terrible for Shadow's voice. I can't sugarcoat........Whenever you hear his voice it sounds like an evil cartoon villain out for REVENGE! Every line sounds worse and worse and the voice makes the personality far, far off from who and what Shadow is supposed to be. He's too dark, too cartoonist mad scientist, too gravelly, and too much of trying to be bad (in a way that makes you look cool....) to be taken seriously as Shadows's actual voice. Everybody who placed him before still tries to capture the smooth tone of Shadow's voice but NOT THIS GUY! *Keanu Reaves is Undecided* There have not been enough lines to make a full judgment on him yet.......
From best to worst: 1.) Keanu Reeves. Do I even need to explain? 2.) Jason Griffith. He delivers by far the most consistently good performances throughout his entire career as Shadow. 3.) Ian Hanlin; He mostly did well for his first performance, sounding deep and serious, but a few reads felt sorta generic. 4.) Kirk Thornton; His performances started out absolutely awful, but suddenly got REALLY good in Shadow Generations, which saves him from the last place spot. 5.) David Humphrey; He never really got good, in my opinion. He always sounded too prepubescent and not deep enough, and it doesn't help that he really only had two games. He was never as bad as Kirk's worst, but never as good as Kirk's best either.
David last?! Why is he last? He actually did get good in Heroes, and it works for him to sound prepubescent in SA2 because of his backstory and the trauma he was going through at the time. Also, he does have a small role in Sonic Battle, where he does sound closer to Jason. And not as good as Kirk’s best? He is way better than Kirk’s best! Kirk still has the issue of sounding too old, but David’s voice was natural and flexible. I don’t get how you could dump on the first voice actor for Shadow when he laid the foundations for every other Shadow actor that came after him. Even then, his voice matches the Japanese VA the closest (because the Japanese cast lay the overall foundations for how the characters should sound in general) which should save his performance. Put him above Kirk!
Love this video concept. Definitely Ian as my favorite Shadow portrayal. Yes, Jason holds a place in my heart from X cartoon but Ian. . . The smugness, intelligence, edge but protectively determined. . . again Ian nailed Amy's Shadow!! Totally brings the Ultimate Lifeform to true life!! 😍😍🌸🌸 Everyone have a blessed Monday September 30, 2024 at 9:29PM. 🌸🔥🌸🔥
David Humphrey is my favorite, with Jason as a close second. Keanu was alright as Shadow but I'm still sad the Hayden Christiansen rumor didn't come true. I think hearing rots Anakin/Vader's voice as Shadow would've made a lot of sense... And would've given him a youthful quality that I feel like we've kind of forgotten Shadow should have. That was a core part of David's delivery that I liked; he just sounds... younger. They're all fine though.
As someone who’s never played the games and whose main exposure to the Sonic franchise consists of the films and The Frollo Show, here are my rankings: 1. Keanu Reeves-the perfect combination of bitter, resentful, angry, and sorrowful. 2.David Humphrey-the OG English voice and a pretty good one at that 3. Jason Griffith-his performance is more cocky and arrogant than bitter and resentful.
I always knew Kirk Thornton could be a great shadow voice if he was given different direction. knowing he voices also Saïx in kingdom hearts, who’s voice and personality is already very shadow-like, I thought he could be perfect but it just wasn’t quite there in the past. I think his performance in Shadow Gens was a gigantic improvement
When Sonic boom came out I never liked Kirk, but when Sonic forces came out his voice started to become just a little bit better. Now I have fully accepted him cuz in shadow generations he's voice was so peak, shiny and not ashy. It is perfect
Ian Hanlin ❤❤❤ he's the BEST Shadow. I grew up with David Humphrey's version of Shadow so he's my second fave. Loving Keanu's take on Shadow as well. On a side note it's nice to see Kirk improving over the years.

My favorite Shadow the Hedgehog Voices are Jason Griffith and Keanu Reeves! Chaos Control! 💗💗
Sonic prime shadow>>>>>
Keanu Reeves as Shadow the Hedgehog. hands down 😏 😎
Ninja:"5:05"Batman:"5:07"
literally the worst
Keane Reeves thumb up
*1st Place David Humphrey*
You can't be the first, the original, the best (and not even because of nostalgia). The smoothness, and the seriousness all mesh as one, and the play-off of Sonic's personality all working together is what made Shadow, Shadow.
*2nd Place Ian Hanlin*
After years of people changing Shadow and not knowing who he is supposed to be and what is supposed he to act like Ian comes close to bringing Shadow back to his former glory. But the voice is too griddy at times and the hip Gen Z lines don't help as it tries to force coolness on to his character.
3rd Place Jason Griffith*
Hum, well this guy sounds too much like Sonic.........
You can hear it in his voice to offend and when he first showed up in Sonic X, he sounded like the Gentleman thief. While he's not bad, he just comes off as a little goofy.
*4th Place Kirk Thornton but really last place*
MAN!!!!
*Keanu Reaves is Undecided*
There have not been enough lines to make a full judgment on him yet.......
Jason Griffith for me i always been his fan no matter what best voice actor ever!
3:25 What kind of cartoon is this?
That’s the official Sonic X Shadow Generations: Dark Beginnings Animation trailer.
Watch it, it’s good
It's like a mix of 2D and 3D animations combined together
They just released the 3rd and final episode of Sonic X Shadow Generations: Dark Beginnings
It sounds like he got deeper though out the years
Jason doing both Sonic and Shadow? damn
From best to worst:
1.) Keanu Reeves.
Jason griffith and the mid 2000s cast of sonic will always be the best
Jason Griffith was my introduction to Shadow, but all of them are awesome, especially Keanu Reeves, he did a great job in the Sonic 3 movie.
My favorites
Are Jason Griffith
Ian Hanlin
Keanu Reeves
Jason is the definitive voice of Shadow for me. But ever since Forces, Kirk has gotten much better.
Eh. He still just sounds like "Evil Sonic" to me.
“If the world chooses to become my enemy, I will fight like I always have.”
Such an underrated line.
Yet it’s mentioned whenever anyone talks about how good Shadow was in 06. It’s an underrated line then?
I like Jason Griffith cuz I grew up hearing his voice but I recently grown found of Ian Hanlin in sonic prime, it sounds so natural and smooth
Jasson Griffith but sonic boom is also pretty insane
David Humphrey, Jason Griffith, Keanu Reeves
Love this video concept. Definitely Ian as my favorite Shadow portrayal. Yes, Jason holds a place in my heart from X cartoon but Ian. . . The smugness, intelligence, edge but protectively determined. . . again Ian nailed Amy's Shadow!! Totally brings the Ultimate Lifeform to true life!! 😍😍🌸🌸
Everyone have a blessed Monday September 30, 2024 at 9:29PM.
ALL HAIL SHADOW THE HEDGEHOG THE ULTIMATE LIFEFORM
Definitely Ian. He's more like an annoyed older brother to Sonic.
Keanu Reeves as Shadow is excellent casting
Ian Hanlin the best voice of shadow by far!! i'll take it from here
2:12 best shadow
Ngl I think bro might be the ultimate life form
To be honest Kirk Thornton never really did it for me as the voice of shadow I was hoping it would stop after Sonic Forces
He actually impressed me with Sonic x Shadow Generations Dark Beginnings shorts. Like his voice soften and sounds similar to David’s
I love shadow ♥️🤍🖤🖤🖤
Already my favourite is Keanu Reeves.
Shadow:
I’m thinking, I’m back!
Jason Griffith is definitely the best voice actor for Shadow the Hedgehog.
Of course there’s some bias involved as I grew up with that voice 😅
I had my doubts when I knew Keanu was the new voice, but he DO sounds awesome
Where's that damn FOURTH Chaos Emerald?! - Shadow The Hedgehog
Kirk Thornton and Keanu Reeves are my personal Favourite voices for Shadow
Kirk Thornton and Keanu Reeves as Shadow the Hedgehog the Ultimate Life Form. Kirk and Keanu best performances as Shadow 🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤💯💯💯💯💯💯💯
Idc I love Ian hanlins the most
I personally love the very slight British undertone David gave Shadow.
As someone who’s never played the games and whose main exposure to the Sonic franchise consists of the films and The Frollo Show, here are my rankings:
1. Keanu Reeves-the perfect combination of bitter, resentful, angry, and sorrowful.
2.David Humphrey-the OG English voice and a pretty good one at that
Shadow in sonic prime is honestly one of my favorite versions.
Ian Hanlin ❤❤❤ he's the BEST Shadow. I grew up with David Humphrey's version of Shadow so he's my second fave. Loving Keanu's take on Shadow as well.
On a side note it's nice to see Kirk improving over the years.
I really wanted Hayden Christensen but I’ll still love this movie none the less
I like the sonic boom shadow voice
Honestly, Jason Griffith, Kirk Thornton and Keanu Reeves voice is really great! I respect and love Shadow story. 😍🖤🔥
kirk has improved so much lately it’s insane, but ian hanlin is my fave
Keanu Reeves is my favorite
Jason Griffith seems to have evolved the voice from his first appearance. I much prefer his season 3 voice of Sonic X over his first appearance in season 2.
