I think we should start our every day with this praise to The Father, Son and Holy Ghost! They are 3 in 1, yet all are active in my life in different ways, one of the greatest mysteries of GOD and of HIS Scriptures! 🙌🏽
We sang this at church every week after the offering was collected. After my very godly father died, my family stood at his coffin and sang the Doxology because the quickest way out of the valley is to give praise.
Days before my father(who served the Lord all his life as missionary to India , visiting pastor& nursing home chaplain) passed from this life, my son was visiting him in the hospital. A friend also came to see Dad. He closed his visit with prayer and singing of the Doxology. Though Dad could hardly speak, my son has the precious memory of seeing his grandfather trying to sing along with praise to his Lord. Something I treasure in my heart.

Hi there just came in from working in the garden, and this was first up on utube.i heard this song for the first time two years ago. I was so blest by it I used it at my mother's funeral ad we carried her out of her home church. I was in tears all the way out as this song boomed out over the loud speakers.how fitting it was.so hearing it again today I will teach the children at church tomorrow .love listening to all these old hymns 😊
Here in the Philippines we sing the Doxology after we collect the tithes and offerings. As a missionary kid our family attended Baptist, Christian Missionary Alliance, Presbyterian, and Methodist oriented Churches. I now Pastor a Congregational Baptist Church and we still sing the Doxology every week. We also sing it before Grace at meals on Special Occasions.
I remember singing this as a child at my parent's Presbyterian Church 65 years ago. I didn't yet know the Lord but this hymn probably was used by the Lord for my adult conversion 45 years ago. An unforgettable most Beautiful hymn. Thank you for playing it.
At my little church in Vermont, we always sing the doxology when we bring the offering and basket of food for the Area Pantry for our priest to raise and bless. I also remember a delightful children's book, The Secret Garden, in which the young heroine and her friends all sing the doxology in the garden they discovered, rescued and worked on.

It has a very special history to me as I remember hearing and singing it every year on Thanksgiving Day at my father's family reunion. My grandparents married in 1920 and raised twelve children - six girls and six boys. My grandparents were not particularly devout but one tradition for them was to sing the Doxology as grace for supper. Tragically, my grandmother died suddenly in 1945 just as the war was coming to an end. She was only 52 and there were still seven school age children in their tiny home in Bakersfield, California. Well, her passing was just before Thanksgiving and all the children serving in the military were able to come home for the funeral, even Jack who had served in the European theater and then was sent to Japan as part of the occupying forces. With Jack home, this was the first Thanksgiving meal that they were all able to share together since before the war. Sadness and joy, all at the same time. The siblings decided then and there that they would all gather together on Thanksgiving again in 1946, and they did - again and again and again. The Stormont Thanksgiving reunion was held every year until 2015 when travel became too difficult for the surviving siblings. And now in 2023, only the "baby", my Aunt Barbara is still with us. But myself, my own siblings and our many cousins (all of the original twelve married and had children) agree that we were incredibly blessed to have such parents as we did, who loved each other so dearly. No matter why they had to gather,they could not hide their delight in being together. My most vivid memory of my family is at those great joyful noisy Thanksgivings when after the six sisters and six sisters-in-law had laid out the feast and before we filled our plates, we stood together and raised our voices in praise to God by singing the Doxology. The Stormonts are a lyrical bunch and believe me, being amongst 70+ family members voices raised together in praise and thanks is an unforgettable experience. The Doxology will be forever linked to my memories of my father's family. It's become a sweet anthem for our generations. So when I had the opportunity to speak at my father's memorial service, I simply could not resist inviting everyone to join me in singing the Doxology. I knew sadness and great joy in that moment as well as a deep abiding peace in knowing that hope endures. The blessing of salvation flows from the Father, Son and Holy Ghost. God just keeps loving us. How can we NOT lift our voices in praise to HIM?
I heard these 4 lines sung after the offering is taken up to the altar-at Grace Episcopal Church, New York City. I was mesmerized, week after week. I am a resident of Nigeria who was spending two years in New York. The hymn has remained with me. It evokes memories of praise echoing in a 100 year old Grace Church.
Back home in Iran, we would sing to this tune at the end of service followed by Amen. That was both In Assyrian language in our Assyrian Presbyterian Church and in Farsi in the Iranian Presbyterian Church.

I'm so glad to have come across this video today, 10th August 2024. I came up to the bedroom just to relax and as I thought of a Prayer Meeting which I have later in the evening and ask the Holy Spirit to give me God's message to share, I heard again, "Let my people praise Me". I knew the LORD wanted us to praise Him but then I thought, "praise, with such a gigantic project before us?" Immediately, this song came to me and I seached for the lyrics. In my Southern Baptist Church (Maryland, US) we sang the Doxology at the close of the Sunday service for many years. I find at odd times the tune comes to mind and I can recall those services even 30-40 years ago.
I learned this as a l ittle kid before I could read and didn't learn the words/meaning right - I remember when I was older stopping to think ' oh, it's telling the heavenly hosts to praise Him! not saying he's to be praised more than your/the heavenly hosts' so many hymns I would get confused!
In the 80's my parents use to take me to church I can remember after the ending of Sunday school they would always sing this song , I wou always thought church was dismissed only to find out that it was the him that carried us into Sunday service
In our local congregation of Seventh-day Adventist here in US, we sing this song in church at the beginning of service shortly after the Pastor and other platform participants enter and prayer is given. It helps to set the tone of reverance and awe of God for the service. You should hear the Black version of this doxology, in a large congregation of about several hundred people and a good musician. A w e some! May we by God's grace live a live that demonstrates a continual doxology.

I love this song. I have a cd with the Discovery House Singers singing a cappella hymns and this is the song they sing as the last song. It really makes you keep your mind on the LORD and how good He is to us.

Looking back now, I think it had a lot of impact as the music began, the congregation arose and as one praised God. Those words are real so very powerful. May God’s praise resound around the earth.
So one of my favorite series of novels is Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey/Matirin series. In many of the books when the sailors assemble for divine services they sing "the Old Hundredth", which I only recently learned is this same tune. I attended Presbyterian churches in my youth and the Doxology was invariably included in the order of worship.
We always sang the Doxology each week at church when I was growing up. Now, our church's prayer group sings it at the end of our prayer time. And our church sings it at the end of special services.
This is truly exceptional, Luke - thank you sooooo! This brings back some great memories… growing up, I recall we sang this at my local Baptist Church back in the Cameroon’s. It served as doxology especially after ordinances like the Lord’s Supper, and then after the collection of month Tithes, etcetera. Ultimately, this hymn provides a boundless reminder of God’s Amazing Grace to mankind through Jesus Christ His Son..
The Methodist church I watch on line sings it after the offering is brought to the front. The pastor raised it over her head as all look towards the large cross on the wall. That is in Virginia USA.

Most of my churchgoing life, from my earliest memories at Seattle's University Baptist and University Christian Churches (1954-1967), at Rose Hill Presbyterian Church in Kirkland (1968-1972), and at Fremont Baptist Church (1990-present) the Ken doxology has been sung as an offertory hymn. I don't think I've sung the Evening Hymn more than two or three times in all those years, and of course to TALLIS' CANON not OLD HUNDREDTH. At Fremont we've occasionally switched to another offertory hymn, like "All things are Thine; no gift have we", or one of the modern lyrics written in imitation of Ken. Occasionally while everyone else was singing Ken, I would do a gender-neutral, less doctrinairely Trinitarian version, singing "God" in place of "Him" and with the fourth line being "Creator, Savior, Holy Ghost!" And for the past four years or so at Fremont Baptist we have been sing Ken's doxology to LASST UNS ERFREUEN, with the requisite "Alleluias" and "O praise Hims" inserted. Most protestants (who is not the majority of Christians on the planet) may have sung the superficial "doxology" song. Roman Catholics and Orthodox Christians certainly don't, and use the Hosanna (Holy, Holy, Holy) as the core of the worship to the Trinity.

This is such an anointed hymn. I can remember so many occasions when this song seemed to bring the congregation into the very throne room of God.

I went to a Baptist church two weeks ago. The doxology was sung at the end of the service.
We sing it at the end of each service. It is an AME staple.
I love this song. I have a cd with the Discovery House Singers singing a cappella hymns and this is the song they sing as the last song. It really makes you keep your mind on the LORD and how good He is to us.
❤it was amazing to hear the other verses to this hymn. Thankyou Luke. In my Baptist Churh we sang those four lines as an introduction to our morning service. Looking back now, I think it had a lot of impact as the music began, the congregation arose and as one praised God. Those words are real so very powerful. May God’s praise resound around the earth.
Before special meals at my grandparent's instead of using speaking prayer we would sometimes sing this instead 🎶

We sing this song always after any family worship.
So one of my favorite series of novels is Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey/Matirin series. In many of the books when the sailors assemble for divine services they sing "the Old Hundredth", which I only recently learned is this same tune. I attended Presbyterian churches in my youth and the Doxology was invariably included in the order of worship.
We always sang the Doxology each week at church when I was growing up. Now, our church's prayer group sings it at the end of our prayer time. And our church sings it at the end of special services.

This brings back some great memories… growing up, I recall we sang this at my local Baptist Church back in the Cameroon’s. It served as doxology especially after ordinances like the Lord’s Supper, and then after the collection of month Tithes, etcetera.
Ultimately, this hymn provides a boundless reminder of God’s Amazing Grace to mankind through Jesus Christ His Son..

Really appreciate your reflections. I must ask, why the piano background is so loud. Makes it hard to focus on your verbal presentation.
Most of my churchgoing life, from my earliest memories at Seattle's University Baptist and University Christian Churches (1954-1967), at Rose Hill Presbyterian Church in Kirkland (1968-1972), and at Fremont Baptist Church (1990-present) the Ken doxology has been sung as an offertory hymn. I don't think I've sung the Evening Hymn more than two or three times in all those years, and of course to TALLIS' CANON not OLD HUNDREDTH. At Fremont we've occasionally switched to another offertory hymn, like "All things are Thine; no gift have we", or one of the modern lyrics written in imitation of Ken. Occasionally while everyone else was singing Ken, I would do a gender-neutral, less doctrinairely Trinitarian version, singing "God" in place of "Him" and with the fourth line being
"Creator, Savior, Holy Ghost!" And for the past four years or so at Fremont Baptist we have been sing Ken's doxology to LASST UNS ERFREUEN, with the requisite "Alleluias" and "O praise Hims" inserted. Thanks for the recap of the story, and especially the Wesley anecdote!

Most protestants (who is not the majority of Christians on the planet) may have sung the superficial "doxology" song. Roman Catholics and Orthodox Christians certainly don't, and use the Hosanna (Holy, Holy, Holy) as the core of the worship to the Trinity.
