- Tom Fitzgerald recently held a press conference to talk about the offseason moves made by the New Jersey Devils. He seemed to be satisfied with some of the roster changes. Especially since it fixes some necessities for New Jersey. Based on the available cap space, it seems like the Devils are done making moves for now. Their primary focus is to re-sign Dawson Mercer.

You cant pass on a 6'7" Defenseman who can skate like he is 5'11".

Very unsuccessful offseason for Fitzy. Bunch of middle to bottom tier scraps added. Pesce & Dillon are slightly above average defensemen. Not a single impact player to get excited about. Players in their mid 30's. Did nothing positive at the forward position. Top 6 not addressed at all. Markstrom is a top 15 guy. Not any higher than that. I'm less excited about the season now then I was before. Fitz did not deliver. No surprise there.
I really wish they had drafted Cole Eiserman considering D was their focus in free agency AND that they were ready to trade Holtz. His kind of goal scoring talent doesn't usually make it to 10th overall AND we are not going to be drafting that high for the was foreseeable future. We already have 3 young high upside D (Luke,Nemec, S Casey). Our forward prospects straight up suck. Filmon will be a 3rd liner at best. It's not a problem because the forwards on our roster are extremely young, but adding a suoer high upside 30-45 goal winger would have made a lot of sense. Especially since Silayev's player profile (tall D who hasn't put up big offensive numbers) are the type who most often turn into busts when they are taken in the top 10.
What about hameenaho and gritsyuk?
Eiserman would've been a terrible pick as one of his biggest holes is skating.

There’s no denying his skill in a cycle offense; he’s great at finding space to shoot when he doesn’t have possession of the puck and has a quick-fire trigger from tight spaces which can and should be considered a coveted asset. At the same time, his struggles with straight-line speed and acceleration don’t project particularly well to a rush-style system that’s reliant on speedy breakouts and capitalizing on odd-man rushes."
Idk about eiserman because he's a little like holtz. I liked the silayev pick until i saw what they did in free agency. If they were gonna get that much defense in FA, why not take a fwd in the draft? But I'm cool with everything they did other than cutting holtz for nothing.
