2.27.12-Philadelphia Pa: (Entertainment/NonProfit/Activism/Celebrity): Last night, as they do annually, Los Angeles played host to one of the most prestigious award shows in modern history, the Academy Awards. In less than 24 hours of Octavia Spencer, 39, accepting her Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her role in "The Help", Philadelphia played host to the FIRST EVER BME Leadership Awards (2012) hosted by Tony nominated actress Sheryl Lee Ralph with live performances by Kia Davis (Philly Youth Poetry Movement), The Philadelphia Clef Club Youth Jazz Band and The Dollar Boyz; one of the largest and most popular youth based movements in the tri-state area. BME (pronounced "be me") or Black Male Engagement is a pilot initiative launched August 1, 2011 in Detroit and Philadelphia to highlight the black men and boys engaging and leading others to service in their cities. A project of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, a Miami based foundation that supports transformational ideas that promote quality journalism, advance media innovation, engage communities and foster the arts-and the Open Society Foundations' Campaign for Black Male Achievement, an organization launched in 2008 to address the economic, political, social and educational exclusion of black men and boys from the American mainstream, the BME Leadership Awards recognized the 10 winners of the BME Challenge, who were awarded, collectively, over $240,000 to use towards their community based projects.

From 1:48 till the end I couldn't help but cry. Didn't think anybody understood the plight of a young black girl, simply feeling unloved but her words give me hope

I don't think that I'm ever going to stop crying over this. All my life, darker than the rest and crying over the lighter skinned black girls that they loved more. Thank you so much for this piece. I will hold it in my heart always.

I could be wrong, but im pretty sure spoken word is a style of poetry, just like apples are a type of fruit but you can't use the word apple and the word fruit interchangeably.
