How to Backup one Synology NAS to Another Synology for an Offsite backup using HyperBackup

  • The easiest way to create an offsite backup is to deploy a separate Synology as an offsite backup and use it as a Hyper Backup destination. Synology makes this process incredibly easy by installing Hyper Backup Server and using the built in DDNS server.
This tutorial covers how to use a remote Synology NAS as a Hyper Backup destination in order to create an offsite backup. This is even accessible for home users by purchasing a cheap J series NAS and leaving it at a friends house! This is very important to do to save your data from fire, water or theft.

Great summaries! Suggestion to make some money and really help users long term. You’ve taken significant time to understand Synology. The main problem is users set up their equipment then when a catastrophic failure happens to their computer or Nas 1 year later, they scramble to figure out what procedures are needed to institute a recovery. Why not take your knowledge and build instruction templates for these different videos. This will allow users to enter their specific configuration information and passwords and document exactly how they set up their device for hyper or other applications. Then have an instruction template that explains exactly how to restore data during a recovery. Put your business contact information on it and ask for a donation. They can print the information out, put it in a binder next to their Nas, and never have to worry about what to do when they start a recovery or want to reconfigure their NAS. THANKS AGAIN!

I had a older Synology (a DS213) in storage when I was inspired by this video to do an offsite backup. I had a “static” backup on SD card elsewhere, but a dynamic backup like this is much better. Since I had recently put a new HD in my main Synology (DS718+) so that I would be running one new drive, I had the pulled drive to use in the DS213, so no initial cost to do this. When I get the remote NAS to its ultimate destination and running, I will get a second drive for the remote NAS. The initial in-LAN backup went smooth as glass, now I just have to do the remote phase. It would be helpful if a video were made on the various options to accomplish a remote backup besides DDNS, e.g. a VPN, Direct Connect, etc.

If you have multiple, incremental (daily backups and you select the most recent backup to restore a folder(s), does it restore evry file in the folder or only the ones that were changed or added to the last backup?
I want to backup my NAS entirely, including the software configuration so I can reset the NAS. I formatted the drives with SHR-2 and want to now change to just SHR. Then I want to restore all the data and configuration. So I want to make sure everything is accurately backed up so I can recreate the NAS and data on the new SHR formatted drives.

I've watched so many of your vids an circled back to this one. You are the best!! What is the best way to backup two "source" NASs (at different locations) to the the same "backup" NAS? I'd imagine each source can be backed up locally at their respective locations. I'll walk through the steps in this vid to backup location #1 locally, but then I bring the backup NAS to location #2 and.... anything special I need to do? How do I connect the backup NAS to location #2s network after it was already set up at location #1?
And all the same DDNS and port forwarding rules still apply. Both sources can use the same port 6281?

I really thanks you for your videos !
    Got a few questions too.
To begin, sorry for my English ...
I have seen you made videos about security too.
I have several questions about backups and security :
If you choose client side-encryption, wil it be It really impossible to find the key without the passphrase, I mean by accessing through SSH for example?
So without the key if you don't have access to the remote NAS, you can't erase files ?
On the target server will you consider creating a user per Nas backed up ? (with only read/write access to the folder used as destination)
Will you consider Hyper Backup more secure than Active BAckup and Snapshot Replciation ?
Will you use Active Backup for Files Server using Rsync though Wan ? I have seen your tutorial about rsync on raspberry . Will it be enough using 873 port and a user which has only access to the destination folder and rsync rights ?
On Snaphost you can't enable client-side encryption. Do you consider it enough safe even through the Internet? (with using secure connection on partner server) ?
    Thanks !

My question is whether Synology's quickconect & DDNS safeguards/protections are sufficient or should I use a better router like Tplink's Omada router to provide another layer of protection or even a VPN. The off site location only has a crapy ISP router with next to no firewall services. I have watched your synology security video's as well.

I am not clear on all that is needed to be done both at the remote site and on my home based NAS. If I plug in the backup NAS into the network at the other house, do I assign a new IP or let DCHP run?? On my home base unit, what do I need to change, and what info do I need to change in the Hyper Backup package so that the next time it backs up, it will do so on the remote NAS. I've been bing watching your videos. They are fantastic. In your security video you talked about using openvpn to ensure secure communication. Is it worth running hyper backup over openvpn? I connected two synology over openvpn but got stuck trying to set the destination for hyperbackup because openvpn assigns ip addresses dynamically. How do I set a reliable destination when the backup vault machines up address is dynamic and inside a vpn? Openvpn is running on the hyperbackup nas; destination nas is openvpn client.

    • @SpaceRexWill
      @SpaceRexWill  3 ปีที่แล้ว

So if you do client encryption (your files are encrypted at your home NAS) then its not crucial to use a VPN (though it is always much more secure) as at worst what a hacker would be able to do if they somehow broke into the remote NAS would be to delete your backups. Overall its very secure.
As for getting the static IP through openVPN I think there is a line you can add to the vpn config file

I assume we can partition the RS819 somehow so that we each get 12TB of data and make it so one of us doesn't "hog" more than our allotted 12TB? We are planning on populating the RS819 with qty 4 8TB HDs, SHR, which should give us 24TB useable space. Does this sound like a good plan? Any steps I'm missing or things I should consider? I plan to watch this video during setup to guide me through the process!
    Thanks!!

A backup question to my question above. What's the best way to split the dats of our shared RS819 NAS? Create two different volumes during set up? Create 2 different storage pools?
And if we ea currently have 4TB of data, will that translate to exactly 4TB of data on the backup NAS too?

So the best way to do this would be to create two shared folders, 1 for you 1 for him. Then give them a limit of 12 TB each. Then with hyper backup just choose the destination for each to be your own shared folder. It will not let you go over 12 TB

Thanks for this video! I've got an SFI as well as a couple questions.
SFI: for demo purposes I recommend changing the Desktop background color on the two devices so it's super clear which device you're on (even rename the devices to match the colors). I've done this on my own two NAS devices to reduce my own frustration :)
    Questions:
    1) Am I supposed to be able to see the actual files in the .hbk file on the destination server? (e.g. browse it via File Station as I can on the original server?)
    2) I originally encrypted the destination server shared folder but I assume I should not do this in favor of using the encryption during the back-up task? It originally seemed logical to me that I'd want to encrypt the destination shared folder so this is counter-intuitive to me...

    • @SpaceRexWill
      @SpaceRexWill  3 ปีที่แล้ว

Hey that's a really good idea!
      1) no, the way that Hyperbackup works is somewhat like a zip file. You could view the files by restoring it, but do DSM its just a bundle
      2) So if you encrypt server side that means that the data is already encrypted by the time it reaches the remote NAS. Therefore you can leave the volume unencrypted as the data you are putting in there will be encrypted. This server side encryption ensures that even during transit the data is encrypted

Hey can you explain what access rights someone offsite could have by poking around the remote NAS?
1.) Can someone just pull out the remote/offsite NAS drives and hook up to another computer -- is data at risk?
2.) What about if someone just connected to the local network of the remote/offsite NAS? Or even directly to the NAS?

Really depends on how much storage you need.
If you are looking to be ultra secure I would get a unit with btrfs so you can do snapshots as well on it. Unless your family / friend (wherever you end up putting it) want to use it as a NAS as well I would just buy whatever is cheap on ebay that fits your storage needs & is not too old. Performance really does not matter too much as its going to be limited by internet speeds

I'll be delighted if you're still monitoring questions on this several month old video. I've been making nightly backups from the office to a remote NAS. Hyper Backup, on the office NAS, reports 391 GB backed up. The Backup Explorer, associated with the task on the office NAS, lets me browse the individual folders and files - presumably residing on the remote NAS. On the remote NAS side, Hyper Backup Vault reports the same 391 GB.
I'm trying to figure out how I would recover the backup files on the remote NAS should the office NAS fail. Logged onto the remote NAS and running File Station, I can see the main folder associated with the backup task. It contains a single file with the extension .hbk. Expanding the directory tree for the .hbk file offers >Config, >Control, >Guard, >Pool, and >Versionlog. None of these have my backup files and I'm at a loss trying to find the files on the remote NAS.
391 GB of backed up files are somewhere on the remote NAS. Any tips on where to find them or what I might be doing wrong?
