    Toolroom guy here. Choose your grinder by MODEL as each brand have a variety of models, some better than others. Welding forums are useful to ask about SPECIFIC current models before purchase. I bought quality even when I was a hobbyist because quality pays, but if I had to I'd use a throwaway tool because so long as the job gets done everything is expendable at the right price.
    The most versatile first grinder to buy is likely a Metabo SIX inch since it fits 6" cutting disks yet is the physical size of a 4 1/2" grinder. Use a guard when operating a grinder with a wire brush, as those eat flesh!
    I wear long cuff TIG gloves for most work, not short work gloves (doh), but I keep heavy welding gloves for where they work best.
    Every gearhead has snips, but new MIG welders should get a pair of welpers unless they are desperately poor.
    Silver pencil beats the excrement out of Sharpies if worklng where a scriber is unsuitable. Sharpies rule in machine shops though.
    Get a full FACE SHIELD for grinding. Goggles interfere with vision, fog up and don't protect your cheeks. Jackson make decent ones with replaceable shields.
    New welders should visit their local welding supply to get a feel for equipment choices. There is a reason welders dress like welders. Copy success, and there is NO substitute for "time under the hood" so SYSTEMATIC practice is what to do. If you are in Bumphuque, Alabama or similar, you can visit welding forums and post pics of your work for feedback. Make detailed posts because welders aren't the type to "bottle feed" ya.

    Great video! I do want to add that for the people who do go for FCAW (Fluxcore) without using a shielding gas that you want to get the right wire, the self shielding wire. with FCAW-G you require a shielding gas, but not with FCAW-S.

    An Oxy/Acetaline or Plasma cutter would be a need to have tool for the home shop too. Mostly because a grinders cutting wheel is primarily for straight to slightly arced cuts due to the fragility of the disk. Many of the cuts I need to make either require a tighter radius or compound miter that would break a cutting disk sending bits of disk flying in all directions. And as far as grinding is concerned, A face shield combined with those safety glasses and gloves are a much better combo.

    Everybody's a welder until it comes to a serious welding job , then most of them can't find their ass with both hands and a five man search party ... L O L ... But they mean well ...

    I'd say the most important tool is the grinder. get yourself a a couple nice disks, one for cutting and removing excess metal( maybe you over filled and also for cleaning metal obviously). a 1/8 disk is great for getting into grove welds, also arguably the most important attachment is the wire wheel. clamps are nice but I'd prefer vice grips all day. regular pliers because pliers are great for everything(needle nose are great for mig/fluxcore). and for welding helmets, you don't need auto darkening. i've used both, you can see fine in a regular helmet with a gold glass lens, just keep your clear lenses clear(they are like 50 cents) most important thing imo when it comes to helmets is the strap and if its comfortable. if you're just doing it as a hobby it doesn't matter get a auto darkening. also welding gloves are very important and i have some 10$ lincon ones from homedepot that are very comfy, i could even use them tig, wearing leathers and having your WHOLE body protected/covered is a must imo. you must only wear leather or 100% cotton or denim. when doing overhead welds youll wish you had a full leather jacket trust me.

    • @adayfortea
      @adayfortea 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah the Lincoln leather jacket is great. I just position my gun away from me now, so nothing really gets on me. I find cutting the fingers off those cheap thick leather gloves and using it over my glove on my left hand. Always seems to get extra hot when I weld overhead.

    METABO grinders are by far the best, other than that I agree with your statement, I get about 5 yrs out of my Metabo's being used 5+ days a week, then I get them rebuilt, but I always buy a new one then too. Beyond that I use cheap ones for certain tasks or to have extras around when I need multiple discs on a single project. In addition to c clamps I'd add magnets, not much help with al, but lifesaver with ferrous materials, good video though!

    I kinda often use a "come along" to pull stuff in the right directions or squeezing them together (sometimes clamps just don't have what it takes)... But I guess that's stretching the whole "must have hand tools" -theme. ...

  • @joely21
    @joely21 11 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Lol! If my first year apprentice caught you migging with those little gloves he would take off one of his shoulder high gauntlets and bitchslap you with it. They make em for a reason, they are awkward for a little while but you will get used to them and they will make you a better welder. Fat Sharpie? Nah mate, scriber, you start off accurate and you have a better chance of finishing that way. Never buy cheap grinders either, if you are working aluminium and steel the choice is Makita or Milwaukee only, anything else and Thermite will kill your grinder quick. If no Aluminium, Bosch Dewalt and Metabo are good reliable work horses.

      No. I agree with Joely21! You cannot POSSIBLY do ANY welding AT ALL until you have a fully stocked shop filled with tools only sold by people driving a vendor truck. If you didn't wildly overpay for a name brand it cannot be used. At all. Ever

    As someone who had a sliver of steel removed from an eye when I was 20, you MUST wear safety specs when using a grinder. I was wearing a cheap set of specs while cutting aluminium sheet with a grinder. I think I own about 6 sets of top quality safety specs.

    • @TheRealFOSFOR
      @TheRealFOSFOR 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Putting the guard on the grinder is also a Very good advice!! I guess a face shield is the best thing to have when grinding. I've been using one attached to my helmet for a couple of years now and I hate grinding without it. All the sparks hitting the face and squinting like crazy because debris always want to bounce under the goggles into them eyeballs. Furthermore I once got the whole grinder jump into my face. The face shield would have saved my ugly mug from a stylish scar.

    yeah I have burned through about 15 grinders so far whether name brand or cheapos from harbor freight. They dont last quite as long, but Having 5 cheap ones laying around with all kinds of blades, disks or grinders are sure better than one dewalt or milwakee for the same price. You forgot wire brush, long clothes for sunburns, but good point with the fire extinguisher. I needed it twice while 10 years doing this type of stuff, but to not have one or look around somewhere..wouldnt be a goodday
